USA, Canada / Polish-American criminals [70]

Personally I think that the topic of this thread should be "Polonia criminals",

Maybe "American Polonia" criminals would be best - as it's in the Polonia - USA forum, and it should be on topic, right?

Mods? :)

You and your limey PFers are also quick to point out that these successful individuals are only 1/2 Polish-Americans. Where are you guys in this thread???

That's what you guys are for, right?

Nice to see that you resort to ethnic slurs when trying to make a point, though.

USA, Canada / Polish-American criminals [70]

Why is it you did not disclose that Gacy is also of Danish heritage?

Thread title : Polish-American Criminals.

Not "Danish-American Criminals" - and anyway, Polish-Americans are quick to claim when someone successful is "one of theirs" despite being only half Polish-American - so it logically follows that they have to accept that the bad guys can be Polish-American, too.

But seeing as you feel a bit upset that he wasn't a pure Polish-American serial killer, let's mention an honourable gentleman who was thoroughly Polish - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Earl_J._Wojciechowski

When Wojciechowski's brother Fred was questioned about him in 1926, he replied, "I've seen him once in twenty years...that was when he shot me, six years ago."

Nice chap, huh?

My, Google is good - if you search for "Polish-American criminals", this link is now top!

One of the more interesting serial killers is the "Killer Clown" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne_Gacy

My my. Certainly another nasty piece of work!

An interesting case is the interestingly named "Kielbasa Posse" -

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Mob#The_Kielbasa_Posse

I mean, guys - couldn't you have picked a more fearsome name?

On the other hand, these guys -

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Mob#The_Greenpoint_Crew

Thoroughly nasty from the sounds of things!

But they do seem to be Polish crmiinals rather than Polish-American criminals - so off topic.

The Unabomber, right?

Nasty chap - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kaczynski

is an American mathematician, anarchist, social critic, primitivist, and Neo-Luddite[1] who engaged in a mail bombing campaign that spanned nearly 20 years, killing three people and injuring 23 others.

USA, Canada / Polish-American criminals [70]

I thought I'd start a thread to discuss Polish-American criminals. We can start with -

Dennis Kozlowski

Named one of the Top Ten Crooked CEO's by Time Magazine - time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1903155_190 3156_1903152,00.html - Kozlowski is an excellent example of a crook. For instance -

Tyco paid $1 million (half of the $2 million bill) for the 40th birthday party of Kozlowski's second wife, Karen Mayo Kozlowski. The extravagant party, held on the Italian island of Sardinia, featured an ice sculpture of the Statue of Michelangelo's David[clarification needed] urinating Stolichnaya vodka. This birthday bash was disguised as a shareholder meeting in order to get corporate funding. In a camcorder video, Dennis Kozlowski states that this party will bring out a Tyco core competency - the ability to party hard. Subsequently, this shareholder meeting/birthday party became known as the Tyco Roman Orgy.[5]

And his conviction -

Kozlowski was convicted on June 17, 2005 of crimes related to his receipt of $81 million in purportedly unauthorized bonuses, the purchase of art for $14.725 million and the payment by TYCO of a $20 million investment banking fee to Frank Walsh, a former Tyco director.[2] On September 19, 2005 he was sentenced by Judge Michael Obus of the Manhattan Supreme Court to serve from eight years and four months to twenty-five years in prison for his role in the scandal.

Tut tut.

Study / Going to Medical School in Poland (University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn / and others) [51]

What do you mean by "Americans"?

I mean the ones who talk, behave and generally are American. As for language, barely any of them can string a sentence together in Polish. And yes, I've spent quite a bit of time hanging out in their dorms, so I know a thing or two about them - although I always hung out with the Asians.

There are also English language programs in dentistry, pharmacy, and physiotherapy.

All of those programs are known for passing Americans without troubling them in Poznan.

how can you be certain they are a medical student, not a student from Mickiewicz or even just a kid traveling?

If you're from Poznan, I'm sure you know the BP garage near the university, near Rondo Przybylskiego. When you see a group of drunken ******** in there, speaking loudly in English with a deep South accent, it's a certainty that they are in fact American and studying at the university.

I do not think that this is petty jealousy on behalf of the Polish students

No, it's definitely not. I've seen the behaviour of the American students with my own eyes - rude, obnoxious and totally despicable. They tend to think that Poland owes them a living, and I've seen one jackass (who must have been in his 4th/5th year) being absolutely rude to some shop assistant because he didn't understand what she was saying (and she was asking for change!).

The Asian students on the other hand tend to be far better and respectful - I know several who learnt Polish fluently.

At the same time, we can be thankful that the vast majority of them will clear off back to America to botch things there.

I am starting to hear stories that the Polish medical universities have begun to dumb down their English language courses

Begun? They've been doing it for countless years. I know several lecturers at the medical university in Poznan - and all of them "dumb down" their courses. It's not a big secret - most of the American students simply wouldn't pass if they were expected to study on the same basis as Polish students. One of the lecturers even openly admits that a 5 for an American student is a 3 for a Polish student. They just pay far too much money -

They appear to be more concerned in getting the 9 thousand euros yearly tuition fee than providing a robust course

9000 euro? It's more than that - last time I checked, it was around 12,500 euro in Poznan.

It's not a secret at all that the Americans in particular have it far easier. I was told one very amusing story about one spoiled bastard actually handing a mobile phone to a lecturer - and she had to speak to his parents, who were upset that he had failed. The same lecturer has also been offered bribes on countless occasions by American students.

Genealogy / Chyrow, Dobromil, Pietnice, Rosenberg - Any info on Mazur/Can Lineages [11]

I am looking for any information on any of these villages. Historical stories, black and white photos, or new photos, and also if there might be any people in these areas with the Mazur or Can surname.

I can help you with photos of Chyrow today - I was there last year. :)

I also know that there's at least one documentary on youtube about the place - I'll dig it up for you.

Work / Proofreading - What is the going rate in Warsaw? [40]

Sounds good, where do I sign up?

(on second thoughts, no...it would drive me insane - I'll stick to shouting at kids to behave)

It sounds like everything else in Poland - do a good job and the work will come, but do a bad job and word will travel fast.

Life / Rate Poland (Life Quality / Culture and People / Food): 1-10! [232]

then why does the avg tourist go to the aforementioned countries.......and not Poland.

Because Poland is, frankly speaking, completely ******* unable to promote herself. But plenty of German tourists do come to the Baltic Sea and the cities, plenty of Slovaks/Czechs/Hungarians go to the mountains, Americans/Brits to the cities - Poland's not doing too badly.

One problem in Poland is a total lack of coordinated effort to advertise the place.

Life / Rate Poland (Life Quality / Culture and People / Food): 1-10! [232]

compare Poland's avg landscape to Croatia, Greece, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal......no comparison.

Come on, Poland isn't average at all. Look at the Tatra mountains - they're every bit as impressive as the Alps and so on. The lakes here are so numerous - again - not average. Forests? Poland does exceptionally well there, especially because of Bialowieza. And the Baltic Sea coast isn't too bad as well.

Let's see -

Croatia : stunning coastline, but rather dull and poor outside of that. The area in the North (for instance, when you drive from Zagreb to Slavonski Brod) is exceptionally dull with absolutely nothing of interest except a few minefields.

Greece? Well...if endless nightclubs and bars full of drunken Brits are your thing..

Switzerland? Granted, the mountains are impressive. But the cities are soulless, and apart from Lake Geneva, there's not much else in the way of beauty.

Spain? Have you actually been to Spain? It's mostly empty desert - nothing impressive at all. The Sierra Nevada is impressive, but the coastline is pretty poor.

Italy? It's similar to Poland.

France? It has mostly everything, yes.

Portugal is ugly as **** - too much tourist development and little else.

If you think Poland is "average", then you didn't travel very much here. The only thing where Poland rates incredibly badly is in the towns and cities.

I must say it - I have great respect for anyone who can do this on a consistent, regular basis. It's not for me at all, but I can respect the concentration required to do a bloody good job.

Any indicative prices?

What I'd do (personally) would be to contact as many people offering the service as possible, give them a sample text and see what they quote you. It's probably the quickest way to find out what the score is :)

Real Estate / Documents requested from foreigners to rent a flat long term in Poland? Invoicing / Contract. [16]

Acknowledgement of payment isn't common here - usually it's just sent before with the payment terms on it. If you don't hear anything from the person that you owe money to, it's assumed it's fine - especially where internet money transfers are concerned.

I'd negotiate it individually, though you should be issuing an invoice anyway. Most people (if they don't need the invoice) will be happy with an e-mailed copy.

Poland wasn`t a Soviet republic, neither practically nor in theory.

Pawian, you might know this better than me - do you know if the Soviet idea of making Poland the 16th Republic of the USSR was ever seriously considered?

just look around you, even on PF, there are more than enough of them too.

Ah, that old Polish disease, the rantings about the imaginary Communists.

I prefer to deal with real Communists, like a certain political party which has a son of a turncoat traitor as a leader.

Real Estate / Residential real estate values go down in Poland [455]

How can people live in such tiny apartments,is there no law in relation to average size in Poland. Birdcages for Smurfs.

Uh, if you're a single person or young newly married couple, what do you need much bigger for?

I know plenty of people who live in smaller apartments in good locations rather than large apartments further away - not least because larger apartments incur much higher administration costs, let alone travel time.

'Demand' is the wrong word. All they can afford is ..........., would be a better description of the situation.
flats that are around 35 m2.
My bedroom is bigger than this.

Most Europeans, for a start. And Americans.

Let's be honest : anyone who spends more than a second of their time contemplating their "race" is clearly a blithering idiot anyway.
