Food / Traditional Polish Foods [141]

Apart from pierogis, you can have other kinds of dumplings, called pyzy or kluski in Polish. Each region of the country has their own variations.

Here, kluski stuffed with minced meat. Check out their content.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Amasing! Ukrainian minority who has resided in Poland for centuries has the right to education in the Ukrainian language. I have just run into a high school Ukrainian language exam for such students. Among set books to read before the exam I immediately noticed Taras Bulba by the famous Russian writer Gogol. It isn`t a literary masterpiece but certainly it is interesting due to the topic - namely, Cossack rebellions against Polish colonisers of Ukraine.

See a film based on the book and made by Russians a dozen years ago with a clear aim to spread Kremlin propaganda about Slavic brotherhood of Russia and Ukraine.

A bloody battle scene - Cossacks against winged hussar riders.

Food / Why Poles not like rice? [95]

Younger generations consume a lot of rice.

Older too. Now I am thinking of making pawian`s paella tomorrow.

Here is the rice dish with meat chunks and veg plus salads, all made by my wife.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation - part 2 [730]

Something intense but which quickly peters out?

Yes! Short lived enthusiasm.

A few decades ago in my primary school teachers asked students to join a campaign of feeding birds in wintertime. Initially, all my class volunteered. Later I remained practically alone with one mate assisting me in supplying food to bird feeders. One teacher called it straw fire. My mate and me were publicly praised at the school assembly for our dedication.

Life / Barking Dogs in Poland [65]

I.don't have in the UK.

You forgot to begin it with: I proudly announce that ........ :):):)
It looks like the most important info you shared with us in the forum today. Thank you so much, we are really grateful. hahaha Do you realise how pathetic you are?

Two stray dogs regularly visit us and feed on kompost meat leftovers. I gave them some tasty morsels a few times and they visibly took to me. They are harmless though look really fierce. I don`t make a fuss about their presence coz they play a useful role - deter hares/deer and strangers.

what a chilling

Yes,. quite chilling and disturbing to know that you are a sexual maniac and abuser. You see a politician with his granddaughters hugging him on his birthday and you immediately get dirty thoughts. Shame on you, pervert!

Life / Polish Music. [298]

Kwiat Jabłoni
Do you know their secret???

It has been revealed recently - the brother and sister duo from Kwiat Jabłoni aka Apple Flower are children of another popular musician - Kuba Sienkiewicz, the leader of a famous rock group Electric Guitars. The kids kept it secret for a few years to avoid being promoted by their father`s fame.

I went to Electric Guitars` concert in mid 1990s. At the end of each of their gigs, they played this song - This is the end. No, not a copy of the Doors!

This is the end, there is nothing left,
We are free, we can go
This is the end, we can go,
We are free, because there is nothing left

A little bug in its hole like a professor behind a desk,
And a bee on flowers like a tram inspector,
So it picks and pokes, writes, invents,
Goes around, dirty, cleans,
And a bush by the road and a brother by the typewriter,
Like a salesman's foot in a sock in a canteen,
A pebble in the field and a guard on guard,
The fridge is still cold, the stove is still hot,
And why, why does it pick and poke like that,
And for what, for what does it think and pluck like that,
And so it applies itself and speaks from the screen,
And raves for years in the evening and in the morning...

a bowl of soup

What if you eat it every day like peasants in the prewar period?? Or at least once a week like impoverished Poles/Polesses in communist times, especially after the war??? ):):)

News / European News and Poland Thread - part 4 [635]

much better..

Much better would be if Germans were more independent thinkers, like Poles/Polesses. You depend too much on your leaders, do anything what they decree. It is enough they promise you MGGA - Make Germany Great Again and you all go crazy. It ended with two great wars whose results were catastrophic for Europe but primarily for Germans.

Of course, the above is said to promote a joking atmosphere so don`t take it seriously. :):):)

Food / Why Poles not like rice? [95]

university canteen.

While I had to consume it as a main course in my primary school cafeteria in 1970s. We considered it a communist dish to kill hunger at a low cost. :):):)
Funny but communist experiences could have put Poles/Polesses my age off rice.....

communist experiences could have put off rice.....

On second thoughts, no, it wasn`t so. The reason is different - rice is too low in calories while Poles/Polesses have always needed fatty foods to survive harsh winters here. Recently, due to climate change, winters are much milder than in the past. That is why younger generations have taken to rice, while elder ones are still reluctant because of their Polish traditional conservatism.

sorrel soup

It has an interesting flavour and I never made fuss when it was offered to me.
But again, I have never made it myself due to its harmful effects.
Another thing, it is a dish associated with extreme poverty, like the one in 19th century countryside or during and after Great Wars. . People ate this soup when there was nothing else available.

Food / Polish food vs Ukrainian food [31]

In another thread I wrote:
No 4 is red Ukrainian borscht which is amasing coz did they forget about Polish red borsch which is tastier???

and jon commented on it this way:

I disagree on borscht though.

I have eaten Ukrainian borsch a dozen times in my life because it was served as a fixed element of the full board and I couldn`t change it. But I have never made it myself.

My charges against it are the following, Your Honour:

1/ it isn`t sour enough.
2/ It contains a lot of green parts of various leafy veg which unnerves me in soup and when they are big, I try to remove them manually. If they are too small to be removed, I close my eyes and eat them coz I have no choice.

Naturally, you can guess that my version of Polish red borsch isn`t troubled with the flaws mentioned above.

Not everyone wants to eat only Polish food

Yes. If they depended only on Polish customers, they would go bankrupt soon.
I read positive reviews by satisfied customers of this restaurant from early 2000s and some mentioned pierogis but most of them focused on universal dishes.
No 5 - Schav aka sorrel soup. I wonder if it is still available.

No more. Probably they read about sorrel badly affecting our kidneys.

Tusk grimacing every mouthful of

Fruit Calypso icecream. Me, too! I am trying to find out why I hated that flavour in ice cream in the past. Probably due to its sourness while you know that I am obsessed with sweet. I am sure Mr Honourable Prime Minister Reverend Donald Holy Tusk had the same problem.

Hey, can someone post something here coz I would like to continue the fascinating story which I began a day ago but I don`t want my new post to be merged with the older one.
Amiga, where are you??? You should take care of your threads, contribute regularly and lead the discussion. Why are you so lazy????? The old saying of Polish bees is: ................................ No, I will use it in the idiom thread.

Life / Warsaw - what's there to love? Semi-livable city? [42]

it played a role of system destroyer a few times.
E.g, it hosted Rolling Stones` concert in 1967.

Next year, in March 1968, Polish uni and high school students rebelled against the communist regime.

Pics show riots in Warsaw.

Life / Warsaw - what's there to love? Semi-livable city? [42]

The Palace of Culture and Science was the highest building in Warsaw for decades. Built by Soviet Russians, heavily criticised for its form alien to Polish architecture. But it played a role of system destroyer a few times.
E.g, it hosted Rolling Stones` concert in 1967. Amasing! The event took place in the Congress Hall. Poland was the only country of the Eastern block where the group performed in 1960s.

During the concert, one of the girls threw a bouquet of carnations (although there are also reports that it was a basket of daffodils ) onto the stage. Mick Jagger pinned one of the flowers into his buttonhole and bit the rest. He threw some of them at the policemen.

Food / Traditional Polish Foods [141]

I also visited a Polish restaurant in Manhattan. They didn`t employ me but gave me their menu brochure as consolation. I read it all and found KOMPOT which amased me completely.

By pure accident I ran into this menu today. Check it out. Kompot is No 1.

No 2 is chicken liver dish. I still remember how johhny admonished me a few years ago for eating giblets aka offals. He warned me against toxins and waste products etc.

No 3 is babka - amasing they used Polish name for sand cake.

No 4 is red Ukrainian borscht which is amasing coz did they forget about Polish red borsch which is tastier???

No 5 - Schav aka sorrel soup. I wonder if it is still available.

No 6 - basic kinds of pierogis, but the sprinkling they offered was simple fried onion. In Poland it is considered a poor substitute of fried lard called skwarki. If I had dined there, I certainly wouldn`t have ordered such incomplete dish.

History / Destruction of Ukrainian churches in Poland in 1938 [289]

Lemko minority which is Orthodox live in southern Poland near Gorlice region. It is only 170 km from Krakow considered the capital of Lesser Poland.

I said it without previous checking coz I know the region well from our regular vacation trips to Wysowa and the vicinity of it. I have a photo collection of a few dozen Orthodox churches.
However, it isn`t 170 km. Coz Orthodox Lemkos lived closer to the capital of Lesser Poland - only 100 km. Amasing!!!!
Check this map, the best I found - Lemko settlements close to Krakow in the red circle.
Where and when did they find themselves there???????????????

They had no right to make such a decision,

Of course, Volhyn Massacre was a genocidal act and I have never denied it.

Hence it was illegal.

Exactly.
Yet, it happened coz Ukrainians remembered occupations, annexations, invasions, persecution and oppression which they had had to suffer for centuries at the hands of Polish kings, gentry and finally ordinary colonists.
Were Ukrainians aliens who appeared in Volhyn all of a sudden and started murdering people for no reason, just for fun?? No, they had their reasons - generations of Poles had worked for it before.

I will pass.

Good. Let`s not waste time on fruitless exchanges. I have already destroyed your whitewashing denials several times and now let me focus on my historical presentation.

Life / Adopting a cat in Poland? [13]

What are the vet consultation fees and vaccination costs?

You don`t have to cover any costs coz such things are done by the shelter for free.

Anything else that may be required like the pet passport or such?

You don`t need to bother about it. The shelter fixes everything for you. Just sign an adoption contract and the pet is yours.

History / Poles should apologise to Ukrainians first [395]

post 176, 190 - the first attempt of the Ukrainian people led by Cossacks to gain freedom from Poland in 17th cent. The rebellion was suppressed.

Later on, there were more rebellions and risings in the part of Ukraine owned by Polish state. The pattern of events regularly included massacres of Polish colonisers and Jews in the areas where the unrest took place, mostly in cities and towns. Killings were done by enraged Cossacks or Rus peasants who had enough of Polish overbearing rule or the cruel exploitation by Polish lords.

E.g, Palej`s Rising of 1702-1704:
In 1699 a new Polish king Augustus II disbanded the Cossack militia and signed a peace treaty with Ottoman Turkey. Cossacks were angered by this situation, and in 1702 colonel (polkovnyk) Paliy started an open rebellion against the crown. Rebellious Cossacks massacred their traditional enemies - Polish szlachta, Catholic priests and Jews - in the area they controlled.
Palei was arrested, imprisoned for a year in a fortress and, at the request of Peter I, extradited and taken to Russia. The peasants taken prisoner, of whom there were about 70,000, had their left ears cut off to mark them as disobedient and prone to rebellion. They were not punished with death due to the lack of manpower in Ukraine. Only the leaders of the uprising were killed.
