The focus of study has changed. Colleges and uníversíties are expected to become vocational centers which "dispense" job skills and little more. Once a student complained in class that I and the other professors were making too many intellectual demands on him, after all, he maintained, he was studying to be an electrician. At that point, I rose and asked the gentleman whether because he worked for a living with his hands meant he didn't work with his mind:-) As a boy, I remember our workmen were all modestly well-spoken and well-educated!
