History / Poland's undying debt to Polonia [76]

Grzegorz,So your going to tell me that someone who is not from the same country has the same understanding of that country and grasps every aspect as well as someone who lives there?

There is no yes/no answear to that question, It depends on persons involved, discussed issue etc. Do you think a German expert on international relations by deafult know less about foreign policy of America than some average Joe from Nevada, just becasue he doesn't live in America ? Do you think I know less about US economy than Jose "no speak Americano" wash disher, who made it into Texas several months ago, just because he lives in the States ? Or maybe a Polish cleaner living in London has better understanding of British monarchy than British "expat" living in Poland ?

Besides, I am Polish and have been living in Poland nearly all of my life, don't you think I rather have a better understanding of this country than a British "expat", who's been living here since 4 years, is not fluent in Polish and has had no other job than teaching English ? Would you support me If I start to use this argument against "expats" ?

Since years, there are conflicts on this forum between people (mainly "expats" living in Poland) with liberal/"internationalistic" (of course until their country of orgin is criticized) views and those with more conservative/"nationalistic" approach (mainly Pol-Ams after most of Poles got fed up with it and left) and "you know **** becasue you don't live in Poland" is their latest offensive weapon, It's becoming almost as boring and irritating as the busia nonsense. If you still don't see it then I really don't know how to help you.

as from what I've read - the US Polonia tends to vote Democrat.

Ah... so after 200 posts full of nonsense about American Polonia being nationalists, racists, anti-semits and what's not, you finally discovered that they usually don't even vote the GOP ? Fascinating. Perhaps some apologies now ?

Peter_H,I absolutely agree with you on that

Sorry P3 but:
1. you are wrong.
2. even If you weren't, as a moderator you shouldn't fall for the (senselessly expolited to death) argument of one side's of the conflict.

BTW Why don't you react to this garbage ?

Polonia...

This mad creature is offending millions of people, cliaming they are anti-semites etc.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

You say mistakes?

Yes, I do.

Probably you are too young to remember those times but I know that Polish economy was totally devastated by the dying communism of 1980s.

I was a kid back then but not a 2 years old one, I saw what was going on then, private small businesses popping up on every corner... ok, I didn't make myself clear enough, what was going on in 89-91 was really fine (especially under under those complicated circumstances) terrible was what happened later, increasing bureaucracy blocking development of domestic companies and at the same time blind love for "foreign investors" and "the west" without thinking if it is good for us or not.

Assembly line? Fine, as long as decrepit communist production lines were modernised and people had work. Isn`t it simple?

No, it isn't simple. Take a look how those few good Polish companies (Asseco, Solaris, Pessa, Adamed or Kopex) are organized, where the profits go and so on. Now take a look at assembly lines. +90% are unskilled or semi-skilled jobs, profits go abroad, when state owned companies were sold to "foreign investors" in most cases the brand disappeared, R&D depertments were shut down, marketing/export etc. departments were reduced to a few clerks, it's all organized the way that hardly any taxes are paid, people are expolited to the limits, investments in human capital are as small as it is possible.

12% unemployment means nothing

There's plenty of work there for people if they want it.

Someone from Gorzow can easily commute to Szczecin these days.

No words :)))))

I think employers are looking for the cheapest person, not the best.

First of all, there is very little demand on skilled labour in Poland (in comparision to size and education of work force) due to pathological structure of Polish economy, which is largely based on assemly lines of foreign companies, call centers, foreign owned retail chains etc. Huge mistakes were made at early stages of transformation from communism and now it's very difficult to get over them, the problem is that current gov is not even trying to do that.

Double the dole and increase minimum wage by 20-50%. Off course this will not happen.

Thank God not, even Tusk is not so stupid to do that. That would totally finish off this country.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

If there is a slowdown- I don't see it.

Hmm but you know, Warsaw's middle and upper class have hardly anything to do with average joe in this country, If they are significally hit, half of the country will be already starving.

while the government needs money NOW.

Priceless :)) Governments always need money, our money, so they can buy votes, hand out contracts to their buddies and so on.

Because in Poland, that 12% aren't much of a burden.

The final proof that you are totally out of touch with reality in Poland.

At least in Western Poland, there's still plenty of jobs available if you just want to work.

Right, especially in and around Koszalin, Gorzów or Zielona Góra. Your stereotypical thinking about Poland is cartoonish.

how does it affect you?

Personally not at all but quite a few people I know lost their jobs in last few weeks.

On the contrary, that's precisely why it has been a "green" island for the past few years.

True but that can't go on forever, especially when the only important decisions of the gov regarding economy is raising the taxes.

News / Dirty deeds of foreign guys in Poland [98]

At 2 am in the Krakow Main Square two British men lured a pidgeon to come closer and then kicked it to death. Aged 28 and 30, were detained and are awaiting trial.

Filthy plebs.

Ya, it seems everyone from royal clans

Please aviod this disgusting word... In Poland it had nothing to do with being "royal". Crowds bowing to some guy is not our pair of shoes.

Genealogy / Are Silesians people German/Germanic? [178]

Some people may strongly identify with one or the other, however Silesian identity is Silesian. Most Silesians are loyal to Poland, however they are still Silesians.

First of all, vast majority of people living in Silesia, are not "Silesians". Some people simply don't get it.

News / Achievements of the Tusk's Polish government [532]

And it is equally pathetic today.

So it's not true:

We have the most expensive road in the world

Being built Warsaw bypass road is probably the most expensive in the world. The cost of one kilometer is 200 million zł, writes "Polish daily Gazeta".

According to the newspaper, half cheaper motorways are built in the Alps, where the tunnels in the rocks have to be drilled or in the swamps of Florida, where the builders had to dry and harden the route.

With the price of the bypass road can not even compete the German motorway, supposedly the best in the world - built under similar conditions to those near Warsaw, cost about 40 million zł per kilometer.

According to experts, the main reason for high prices is "... not enough reliable documentation being prepared at the behest of the Chief Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in Poland. Consulting Engineers are preparing cost estimates for little money. They save on the study of the area, where the route will be constructed. They don't have enough detailed insight (. ..) and just in case they overstating the cost calculations"

Work / Questions regarding Job and salary? Junior accountant position in Poland. [33]

I do employ people for "a foreign company". I tell you, go and impress villagers with your "wisdom". Besides, the job is a Junior accountant in an outsourcing center, It's basically "processing", a modern equivalent of a production line worker.

Not true if 1) the job is with a foreign company 2) it is located in the large city.

Not not true.

To be honest Grzegorz Polish degrees don't hold much water with foreign companies.

You can tell it to your village buddies, I've been working for international companies for many years and not at the bottom to put it mildly.

The reson why foriengers are paid more is due to the international expertise and knowledge that they will bring to the table plus a higher productivity.

Yes, because we all know that a 21 y.o. guy with no previous experience has plenty of that. Dude, go talk to pawian, don't provoke me or I will humiliate you the way that you will run away and won't show up here again.

UK, Ireland / Ad from my UK newspaper today : not worth a zloty [13]

Surely they will look totally different?

Sure but a drunk guy, who came to Poland several hours before may not be aware that something is wrong.

But that was years ago.

Yes people still have a lot of old banknotes, I personally have at least a thousand of them.

Work / Questions regarding Job and salary? Junior accountant position in Poland. [33]

Exactly.

So I'm 21 years old, no previous full time job postion and my educational background is an economic Gymnasium.

Let's be honest, with such qualifications you would have problems finding any job If you were Polish, after x months of searching, you would maybe find something for 1500-1600 a month. The company seems to have a policy of paying foreigners several times more than Poles. A Polish person on that position wouldn't get more than 2500 and for sure a degree in economy and fluent in 2 foreign languages would be required. If you want to live in Poland, just take this job because such opportunity will rather not happen again. Just take it.

What is your point, strange man ? Don't tell me you still don't understand that difference in labor productivity between nations has hardly anything to do with them working hard or not... that would be too much.
