Off-Topic / Eurovision - Today I will be ashamed to be Polish [586]

The Moldova entry

Where else but Eurovision can an accordion and violin drive the audience crazy? Tonight was an even bigger reaction than the semi....

Spain and Moldova seem to have had the biggest audience pops so far....

Turkey has some very good music

I love lots of Turkish music (though they don't usually seem to send their best to EV... like Spain....). I think Erdogan's Islamist agenda has scuttled participation in recent years, what a miserable buzzkill he is.. (in addition to a terrible economist and evil human being).

I think Ukraine could win the televote but I'm not sure about the jury... they've tried to liven up the juries in some countries but they still seem to be made up largely of fossils....

TBH I preferred Ukraine's entry last year (not so much the video but the live performances were great) but this year's entry puts on a show with lots of Slavic folklore (like the shaggy guys, similar figures are found in old Slavic pagan celebrations, my favorite are from Slovenia....) a win by them would be very credible

Meanwhile.... what happened to German music?

I used to like a fair amount of German pop (fun stuff the country weirdly got no credit for....) but I lost track a few years ago when the German musical channels disappeared from Polish cable lineups...

Can you name interesting German songs/artists in the last couple of years?

Language / Polish from Russian [14]

learning one Slavic language from another, ....was tough

Well I take it the OP's a Russian native speaker so it won't be hard, but yeah taking a second slavic language on as a foreign language is tough as they mix and interfere with each other in ways that Romance or Germanic languages don't....

And Israel:

Morocco even competed once (and I think has an open invitation to return but won't as long as Israel is competing).

IIRC in the event of an Australian win the following competition would take place in the UK...

And lots of European countries sit out Eurovision for shorter or longer periods. Turkey hasn't been in a while and I think Italy didn't compete for a long time....

Language / Polish from Russian [14]

I want to learn Polish from Russian, is it easy or hard or impossible?

It's not hard if your first language is Russian and Ukrainian would only make it easier.

Some years ago I knew a Russian who arrived in Poland without a word of Polish (had been told it wouldn't be necessary which he quickly realized was wrong) by the third day he had a textbook and within a month was functional for everyday things and within three or so months was pretty fluent.

Outside of Poland it will take longer, of course, but you should be able to read native materials within 6 months or so (if not sooner).

Understanding the language will take longer of coure, though still very doable, especially with internet resources...

That would look great in the final.

Didn't make it.... too bad. Neither did Georgia (one of my favorites)..... bunch of generic crap did make it though (Australia and Romania were the worst offenders)

Is it tonight?

First semi was last night, tomorrow is second semi and the grand finale is saturday.

music shows from Djibouti

I like a lot of Albanian folk pop, sensual beats (almost a bit like cumbia) whiny clarinets. Fun stuff.

why we send such **** to Eurovision.

This year's UK entry is the best in many, many years... far better than the last UK entry to win (in the 1990s?)

On the other hand I liked the otherwise universally reviled airline number (as a novelty fun thing not a song) so maybe my taste isn't a great reference but the UK is in the top 5 in the betting pools....

I dunno why we send such crap every year....

It's an expensive show to put on... Germany doesn't want to waste more money (how much did the last German hosted one cost?)

With all the serious stuff going on..... did anyone watch Eurovision last night? Not the greatest semi-final but okay.

Hyped Latvia didn't make it through (didn't like it).

I liked Lithuania, Netherlands and Iceland (all singing in their own language rather than euro-crap English).

Favorites Ukraine were.... okay. I liked last year's entry better but they put on a show.

Surprise standout was.... Moldova! The audience went crazy for this whacky folk tune with accordions!

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

How about Hungarians trying to do what is best for Hungary...

And how is alienating all the countries Hungary borders 'best' for Hungary?

How is alienating all the countries Hungary is in international agreements with (agreements that were freely entered into).... 'best' for Hungary?

Especially since it's doing all that for the sake of a country it has no borders with and which has oppressed and subjugated it in the past?

How does that make any sense?

Life / Will Poland ever be multicultural like Sweden, Germany or France? [283]

Now with millions of Ukraine women in Poland

Compare Ukrainian refugees, olverwhelmingly women and children, to the 2015 wave (overwhelmingly fighting age young men who cared so little for their country of origin that they ran rather than fight for it... what would they do for the countries they arrived in?)

History / How much Poles trust to France? [130]

Poles would seem to treat their...Catholic faith with more seriousness than life itself

That wasn't even true in the 1980s....

Life / Will Poland ever be multicultural like Sweden, Germany or France? [283]

why would Swedes want all those Somalis and other brown people?

A fundamental tenent of many modern ideologies is that people, human beings, both individually and collecitvely, are interchangeable widgets and all seemingly significant group differences that can easily be overcome by the proper social policy and if they aren't then the problem is that people have improper ideology.

Like communism and alchemism it has failed, again and again, but true believers refuse to let it go.

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

there was little to no support for a drastic change in Germany back then

Or now.... at least among those who count.

Was the German economy less, more or equally dependent upon Russian goodwill at the end of her chancellorship? Did she move the economy away from or closer to Russia?

That's all that matters.
