Food / Taste of food in Poland vs other countries [186]

Or maybe they are trying to justify their return to Poland to avoid telling everyone that they utterly failed abroad?

Doubt it. But Polish red meat is not high quality, simple as that.

Pork/chicken - no idea, but I have heard that Polish chicken is good quality.

Life / My experience in Poland 15 years ago as an American trying to live and work there. [167]

Hi Michael

Style wise, I'm thinking almost post-apocolyptic rather than dream-like!

Some good stuff though.

(By the way, do Romanian beggars have such a tenacious reputation in other parts of the world?! We have them in Ireland too but to be honest they are fairly pathetic in terms of harassment - zero intimidation or bodily contact for a start. They just sit there mumbling - will barely look at you)

USA, Canada / Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture" [568]

True, however usually what people say here is "I"m an American but my ancestors came from ........."

Yeah - you've hit the nail on the head. Most Americans I've met define themselves this way. So it's probably nothing to do with Polonia at all really - the apparent interest/connection/fixation call it what you will, with the ancestral country, is porobably pretty common in the US generally.

ut when people claiming to be Polish don't even know how to say their name - well, you see my point.

It's my point too - everyone does it.

Plenty of Seán Mahoneys in Queens who think they are 100% Irish and go on about the old country etc etc - most of them don't know how to say their name either.

Love / Polish men are complete doormats (especially after they get married) [125]

I don't see any clash here.

Not really, but women need to make their minds up as to on which occasion we are supposed to exercise which traits. Then, we will have a perfect world!

So basically, in the meantime, it's be Cary Grant or feck off ya useless sh1te then...

: )

He is either a total moron for CHOOSING to live in a country he hates or he has been lying this whole time about living in Poland. I believe the latter.

Pretty much sums it up.

Then there's the way that many of them completely mispronounce their "Polish" name. The worst example? I found a video on youtube of someone called "Marchewka". Anyone living in Poland will know that it's pronounced something similar to "mar-hef-ka" - but to the Polonia? It's "Mar-Chew-Ka". Gah.

Everyone does this. Even with arguably much more straightforward names & terms.

Americans tend to pronounce the Irish surname Mahoney as Ma-HONE-ey, which is wrong. The British tend to say KAYhill for the surname Cahill (wrong too).

The first female MP in the British house of commons was Irish - Countess Markievicz (she married a Polish count)

Her surname is pronounced by the Irish (and most other English speakers) as Mark-eh-vits, wrongly, but who cares?

Are we all supposed to refer to Paris as PaREE?

Anglophones will change "foreign" words to suit - as will anyone elseo-phones.

It's accepted - not a big deal.

Love / English Men vs Polish Men [207]

Yeah maybe. Funny, breast baring is a bit more international though isn't it?

Or at least it should be. Must get on to Brussels about that one.

Love / English Men vs Polish Men [207]

Not just British guys at all though - I thought mooning was pretty much universal among drunk, blue collar, 'good ole boy' types the world over?

That would be an idea. I would suggest getting some better dental care though

Been watching too many Austin Powers movies maybe?

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [83]

or at least warn them that sausages are made with 10% meat, milk, bread an soy.

Christ on a bike - where do you buy them??? Off gypsies, €1 for 100??

I wouldn't buy anything that has less then 85% meat.

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [83]

Roast Beef, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, peas, great traditional English meal.

OK, maybe - but could you name 5 more? That are actually eaten regularly?

Love / Why do so many Polish girls dye their hair BLACK? [124]

Then I found out it's a fashion in Poland.

Fairly common everywhere for the "follically chellenged" I would have thought - just get rid of it and forget about it.

History / How Poland views Europe [44]

Ah right, OK. Thanks. A bit obscure though : )

Ireland - who the hell thinks of potatoes when hearing of Ireland?

Well plenty of English people would - maybe the map was the creation of an English person and therefore their assumptions of how Poles may feel about other countries? It would explain a lot maybe.

"Why" don't I get it? I don't understand the implication/association - do you?

Or do you mean "why" do they say this? - that's what I'm asking.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

Don't really know why people tend to think that "Polak/Polakiem/Polaków" is insulting... I mean polish people in Poland uses the words on daily basis...

Regardless, Polack/Polack is used as a term of abuse by English speakers. I'm not sure if the spelling is significant but it doesn't really matter because it is the sound of the word that is important and the intention that matters - and the intention of polack/polak, among English speakers, is to offend.

Life / POLISH MYTHS - let's debunk or prove them! [140]

Too much frowning causes creases on the sides of your mouth known as "frown lines". Is this truth or is it a myth?

Well, many unhappy/negative people have naturally downturned mouths in my experience so I would say this is probably not a myth.

Travel / Jazz in Poland [27]

Naaaah. Much too generic - it's not uniquely Polish at all and never really was.

Polish jazz however is quite distinctive from what I've heard. A very special sub-genre : )
