Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

The Left wants to disarm America TOTALLY is the issue.

That's NRA propaganda and a lie. The vast majority of Americans want to limit access to certain types of weapons. Nobody will take away your hunting rifle, so you can continue to kill Bambi, and your little toy handgun you want to fight the US Army with as a militia man is safe, too.

I just wonder how high the human cost has to be before anything changes.

Over 37,000 people were killed in 2017 by guns, including 22,000 suicides. We've had already 34 mass shootings this year. Sandy Hook and the massacre of innocent 1st graders was ignored by the NRA and its supporters. The incident in Las Vegas simply disappeared from the news and got swept under the carpet. Trump's newly published budget will now significantly cut funding for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which gun dealers use to verify if someone is banned from buying a gun before selling it to them. In other words: nothing will ever change here, unfortunately. Unless they can grab the NRA by the balls and defund them, that is. It's happening right now with major corporations canceling their rebate programs with that fascist organization.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

I don't think the armed guard was a good guy, he should be charged with murder for not doing his job.

Turns out there were also three Broward County Sheriff's deputies cowering behind their vehicles, and none of the four deputies had entered the school. Only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun, right? Now let's waste a billion dollars to arm our teachers instead of implementing some basic gun control and investing the money in our schools. Education is overrated anyway...

What would happen if a stray meteor hit the earth today ?

Stupid deflection. What's the chance that a wacko gun nut enters an elementary school and massacres the kids?

Fact is, Poland does not need this BS. Ever.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

When the shots started ringing out the armed security officer ran outside and hid.

So much for the NRA's "only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun"...

Arming teachers as they are discussing right now would be absolutely nuts, too. You'd only need one mentally unstable teacher locking the classroom door and gunning down his or her students, and then what?

Are you really that ignorant, or do you maliciously twist the facts here?

Arguing with gun nuts is like talking to a brick wall, Tacitus. These hypocrites only pretend to have some empathy for the victims of school shootings and massacres like the one in Las Vegas - as long as you don't try to take their guns away. Instead of implementing some basic gun control measures, they'd rather send you their "thoughts and prayers". Your dead kids don't count. It's a price they are willing to pay and they distract at every opportunity. Shooters are always mentally unstable even if they are not, they argue that "only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun", and now they want to arm teachers to protect the kids at school. The real problem is not tackled. Until the next massacre, and then it's rinse repeat. The NRA and their followers are the real nut jobs. Most Americans understand that.

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1538]

So now you even doubt Wiki, eh

You really need to work on your reading comprehension, my friend. I didn't question that Gabriel's father was a Nazi sympathizer, I questioned whether his dad was the reason for his statement regarding Poland. Maybe in this particular case the father was really the reason for his position, but Gabriel is known for being a leftist do-gooder. The "mea maxima culpa" type, if you know what I mean. So I still have my doubts about his sincerity.

what's self-flagelatory about coming clean about one's familiy's Nazi ties, however faded, however distant?

I wasn't talking about Gabriel, I was talking about the Germans in general. There's been a change in attitude amongst the younger generations, and they rightfully do not accept the blame for a crime their great grandparents committed some 75 years ago. Never forget, of course, but move on. It's time. The Holocaust has been turned into a political weapon that is used by some countries and by other interested parties at every opportunity. In Germany there is even a word for it: "Nazikeule". You smash any opposing view by calling someone a Nazi or by indicating that his or her view is close to the fascist ideology. Works every time. Israel is now trying the same blame game and public shaming with Poland.

you really think too much TheOther

I was only repeating what some of our Polish and PolAm members stated here on PF: get Poland out of the EU.

Personally, I believe that'd be nuts.

that his father in particular was an unabashed Nazi sympathizer might have something to do with his thoughtful stance

Most likely not. The times when the Germans could be shamed into some self-flagellation are almost over.

they will get angry

The current administration would follow through, I can guarantee you that much. Just watch what they do to all the international trade agreements at the moment. You are not dealing with rational people.

because some psycho liar

You are underestimating the influence of Israel's lobby in Washington.

acquiring nuclear weapons

You believe the Russian would allow that?

Good luck with telling that to the US business

"America first" is the name of the game, don't forget that. If Washington comes to the conclusion that the Polish position goes against their political interests in the Middle East, trade tariffs on Polish goods (the EU protects you at the moment, of course) or giving Poland the Cuba/ Venezuela treatment would quickly do the job to convince Polish politicians to change their mind. Poland is much more vulnerable than you think it is.

Work / Can I find a job in Poland that requires speaking in English? [82]

Knowing English isn't exactly a rare skill in Poland anymore.

Which is probably true for most countries these days.

...who claimed that their Matura/Abitur-level English iminently qualified them to go one-on-on with any educated native-born and trained English speaker.

You couldn't hold a candle to a native Polish or German speaker either, so what's the point? Be happy that you are able to get away with English most of the time.

yet their spoken and written English is typically lacking in comparison with that of an American, Brit, Australian or Canadian.

Of course, because you can't compare them to native speakers. The question is, how many Anglos know a second or third language that they speak fluently? See, you lost already against your European competitors...

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

Poland actual competes with other EU member states for business and investments.

Foreign corporation moved into Poland because of a well educated workforce and low wage levels. Same happened in the Czech Republic. Geography plays a role in investment decisions. Romania or Hungary are at a disadvantage (logistically) because of their distance to the main markets of the EU.

Over the past decade Poland has done very well while other EU countries (especially the more older members) lagged and staggered along.

Given sufficient investments, a country with a GDP of - say - 1 billion has naturally a much higher growth rate than a country with a GDP if 1 trillion.

You seem to think Poland would just be another Belarus if it weren't for the EU.

No, not at all. I already said that the Poles can be very proud of what they've achieved so far. But ask yourself the question what would've happened without EU membership. Millions of Poles would've stayed in the country and the unemployment rate would've gone through the roof for a very, very long time. Many foreign corporations would've avoided Poland, so you could've kissed a ton of jobs and tax revenue goodbye. Third, your infrastructure would still be in shambles, and your old industries most likely, too. Be honest, in what fields was Poland competitive in 2003? Would these industries have provided enough jobs for the people? What about pensions?

This chart puts everything into perspective quite well: statisticstimes.com/economy/countries-by-projected-gdp-capita.php

Look at Ireland.

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

They didn't go to Poland due to bureaucratic EU diktats.

No, it was globalization in action. Wages are always the biggest cost factor, so foreign investors took advantage of Poland's highly educated, yet comparatively cheap workforce. They exploited and still exploit the situation to manufacture products and provide services at a cost effective and competitive rate. The domestic market in Poland is not particularly interesting to most of these foreign investors; it's the markets to the west which they can access without the additional cost of import duties/ tariffs. And this is why Poland's membership in the EU is so important. Take away that advantage, and the country will face the consequences.

Wait and see Britain post brexit then u might see the future of poland, before that you are only making an assumption.

It's called common sense, Dolno. The Brits are having second thoughts already, and there are more and more voices that seem to be willing to consider a second referendum (according to some of the British news outlets). There's a reason for that.

And then what? Most international corporations moving away and taking the jobs with them. Millions of Poles being forced to return home and not finding a job. The Polish industry having to face international competition. You would go down before you can say "Oops", but hey ... no foreigners in the country ... :)

Hence it's 97% of it is our successes as Polish people.

Dream on, Adrian. Poland can be very proud of what it has achieved so far, no question, but don't be so cocky to claim that you did it with hardly any help from the outside. Without EU membership and funds and without foreign investment, Poland would still be a dirt poor ex-communist country with hardly any infrastructure or industry to speak of and a huge unemployment.

Would be beautiful

Nationalist Poles like you should demand a referendum to make sure that Poland leaves the EU. Seems you guys need to learn the hard way how valuable the EU really is for your country.

Nothing to do with wanting a buffer but everything to do with wanting a stable and prosperous democrac

Remember that it was Blair who initially wanted most of the former Warsaw Pact countries in the EU and NATO. It was in the strategic interest of the USA.

were growing faster than almost any other eu country

You are mostly growing because of the increasing trade volume with other EU members. Leave the union and we'll see what happens. How about losing roughly 70% of your duty free exports to the common market for a start? How about all these corporations moving out of Poland because you've lost easy access to the EU? The Brits are already rethinking their vote for BREXIT. Guess why.

Not enough information. When did your ancestors emigrate to Canada? What was the first name of your grandfather? Do you know anything about the port of entry and the ship's name? Fawaden is not a town name. Is it supposed to be in the area that is now Poland? Prussia was big.

It takes time for a president to get impeached.

Trump won't get impeached. As long he's the useful idiot who signs everything they put in front of him, the GOP establishment will protect him. Once they are done with their destructive agenda, Trump will resign "voluntarily" for health reasons.

German hegemony in Europe is harmful for Poland

Any country that takes German cash with both hands has no leg to stand on when it comes to whinging about German hegemony.

Trump presidency forms a nice and much expected counterbalance

Trump and his followers are out to destroy the EU, in case you haven't noticed. Some of the religious nutters who support him believe that the European Union is "The Beast" or the "Seat of the Antichrist". One of the reasons why the Mercer family (the ones who are behind Breitbart) supported Farage and the UKIP during BREXIT. Don't believe me? Google "Europe in Bible Prophecy".
