News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

Damn! They don't want any refugees from the US? Well that sucks, because I had my loan chair with attached balloons all ready to go. Man, and to think I almost made it! ;)

Travel / Travel to PL from US w/ dual citizenship - any problems on borders? [26]

So it looks like I can't travel to Poland with an American Passport only? To do it I will need a Polish Passport as well. Otherwise I may encounter troubles with Polish authorities on my way back to US?

What sucks about it is that I don’t know what kinds of documents they will require from me in order to get a new Polish Passport (the old one is long lost), how long will it take, how much of my time I'll have to waste on it, and how much it will cost me in fees. And all that just for one trip. And to think that I could go anywhere in Europe with my US Passport without any hustles except for my Old Country Poland... Go figure.

Travel / Travel to PL from US w/ dual citizenship - any problems on borders? [26]

So do I need to get a Polish Passport just for one emergency visit? I don't really want to go through all the trouble of getting a Polish Passport, especially that I don’t even know when I will need it. I don't plan to vacation in Poland or to visit for any other reason. Would they let you out of Poland on an American Passport if it was an emergency visit?

I think I’m gonna make some phone calls to the Polish embassy or consulate next week, see what they’ll have to say about it.

Travel / Travel to PL from US w/ dual citizenship - any problems on borders? [26]

I also have heard some horror stories of American/Canadians visiting Poland and not being able to come back because of their place of birth. My guess is that it's probably a rather unusual occurrence. IMO it all depends from the Polish bureaucrat you'll have to deal with at the border, but most likely you should be OK.

I was born in Poland and left there as a teenager, and I haven't been back for over 20 years. But I know that sooner or later I'll have to go back to visit (family reasons). I don't even have a Polish Passport anymore and I'm not going to get one neither. If they are going to be a$$holes to you, it makes no difference if you have a Polish Passport or not.

I found this on the USCitizenship.Info website, you may find it helpful:

Persons may have dual nationality by automatic operation of different laws rather than by choice. For example, a child born in a foreign country to US citizen parents may be both a US citizen and a citizen of the country of birth.

Claims of other countries on dual national US citizens may conflict with US law, and dual nationality may limit US Government efforts to assist citizens abroad. The country where a dual national is located generally has a stronger claim to that person's allegiance.

Most US citizens, including dual nationals, must use a US passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country.

Work / How much do casino dealers earn in Poland...Krakow for example? [8]

I'm a casino pit boss in the US. Where I'm from, dealers make $35-50K, pit bosses $60-80K. In other places in the US a dealer can make up to $120K+.

Unfortunately, from what I know, dealers in Poland make peanuts comparing to the US. To my knowledge, dealers in Poland make literally $2-3/h, pretty much even less then the average in their area. Pit bosses in Poland make only slightly more.

Life / Doing laundry in Poland [66]

the washers in Germany run for 3 hours!

IMO that's because the European washers (front-loading) use less water then the ones in North America (top-loading), so they are considered more environmentally friendly. Of course, if you run the washer 3 hours instead of 20 min, you use 9 times more electricity, and that's not so environmentally friendly at all :) LOL!

My washer does a load in 20 min (fast cycle), but the dryer takes about 40 min. Since somedays I do 5-6 loads at once, I am thinking of adding a second dryer, since my laundry room is in the basement and I’ve got plenty of unused room in there…

Life / You know you have been living in poland too long when.... [73]

you miss "chleb" when visiting back home

You know, Polish "chleb" is just like Polish beer: it tastes really awesome if you have it once a while, but it you eat it every day it must be way too boring.

You know you have been living in poland too long when....

...your car is about 1/2 the size of an average golf cart.

You know you have been living in poland too long when....

You put ketchup on scrambled eggs, mushed potatoes, pork chops, sandwiches, pizza, pasta and pretty much everything else you eat. As a matter of fact, you have a collection of gourmet flavored ketchup bottles in your pantry and you're proud of it!

You know you have been living in poland too long when....

1. ...you start eating sandwiches for breakfast
2. ...you eat dinner at 4 pm.
3. ...you start measuring distance in the number of buses you need to take to get there
4. ....Isusu is you dream car, but you could never afford one anyways
5. ... you have pork and potatos for dinner every night (or rather day)
6. ... your "apartment" is a size of an average walking closet and you live there with 3 generations of your family

USA, Canada / Looking for spirytus GTA area (Canada) [14]

I had to look up what exactly "spirytus" is, and it turns out that it is a 190 proof alcohol. As far as I know it is illegal in the US. You can get the regular stuff (40 proof) or the speciality strong stuff (80 proof), but nothing higher then that.

Or ask someone to buy it and ship it to you from the US.

In the US this stuff is illegal, but what would you need it for anyways?

Life / "I love you" in Polish culture... [36]

but in the us, i hear it very often and i do not believe it... when i don't say it back, people look at me as i was weird... "yes, i like you a lot, but i do not love you", is it hard to get...?... i say it, when i really mean it...

For me it's the opposite: I may not like everybody in my family, but I do love them anyways.

They're your family, you gotta love'em. But you don't have to like them :)

Life / First Racial Attack for me in Poland [158]

The only time I've been told to "speak polish", was by one of three Police officers when he was giving us a mandate for being drunk at midnight, singing and walking home. I apologiesed in English, and tried to speak some Polish. He repied in Polish " you are in Poland, speak Polish".

And you didn't sue them for abuse of power and embarking on your personal rights? I would, why not? I would have the police officers fired and the whole police department retrained. I would go to the papers, news organizations, etc. I wouldn't let it die till I got what I want.

News / Apology to Russians for Osetia and American missile base [78]

I know nothing about Polish politics; nevertheless I have to say I am extremely glad that Obama and Baiden had promised to cut founding for the missile defense system. Not that I don't wish Polish People to feel safe, it's just I don't think that American taxpayers should have to pay for the defense of Poland or any other country except of the U.S. of A. Don't get me wrong; I hope that Europe is secure and safe, but not for my money. It's Europe's defense, let it be Europe's expense.

Not to mention that after we'll spend an ungodly amount of money on somebody else's defense all will ever get in return is more hatred and envy from the very people we're spending my tax money on.

Life / First Racial Attack for me in Poland [158]

Maybe it wasn't an act of bigotry but simply a random act of hooliganism and violence?

A Polish friend of mine just recently visited Poland, and one of his comments upon his return was that there is a lot of young Poles with shaved heads just looking for a reason to jump you. He said he was often afraid for his well-being when walking down the street. This is sort of ironic, because we both work in downtown Detroit and are responsible for hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions of $ in cash on daily basis :) If Downtown Detroit is safer then Downtown Warsaw, they may have a problem there. LOL

TIMELINE 2025: POLISH PRESIDENT KWAME NDBALE WITH THE POLISH FIRST LADY EWA DABROWKA
WITH THE BLESSINGS OF THE EU, STO LAT!

What's wrong with that? I think that's an excellent idea!

Poland has always been a net looser...

Geez o peets, the word is spelled 'LOSER' not 'looser'!

I was curious what ta-moko is, so I Googled it up.
Is ta-moko an all-body tattoo, like this one?

Sorry, Princess, this may work for you, but not for me, thank you! (no offense, Princess). Here is an otherwise good looking girl who, IMO had scared herself with a tattoo of a goat-tee... Why would she do that?

News / POLAND TO SIGN US MISSILE SHIELD DEAL TONIGHT [239]

This is what the grass roots America is pushing for, along with both the fringe right as well as the fringe left. It's gonna happen soon, I believe, and most of the Presidential candidates are talking about it quite a bit.

News / POLAND TO SIGN US MISSILE SHIELD DEAL TONIGHT [239]

Honestly, who cares who started it? It could have been the Georgians, maybe it was the Russians Special Forces who simply pretended that Georgians killed 4 Russian soldiers? What is important is that Georgia is invaded by Russia now. The fact is that Russia is getting richer and richer (thanks to oil and gas money), and they spend all their income on rebuilding the military and the Russian Empire. And they will do things by force if they need to, that's at least what they are trying to say by invading Georgia. Georgia is a lesson for other countries, and the lesson's motto is "Watch out, Russia's back!"

News / POLAND TO SIGN US MISSILE SHIELD DEAL TONIGHT [239]

I don't want to support anybody, and for sure we can't afford another war, especially with Russia. And the conflict between Georgia and Russia is just a show of strength on the Russia's side. They simply did something nobody was expecting them to do. It's a free lesson for the other countries in the region, that's all.

News / POLAND TO SIGN US MISSILE SHIELD DEAL TONIGHT [239]

IMHO USA should NOT have to pay for the defense of the EU countries, that needs to be Europe's job, not the US'. They need to be in charge of it, both financially and in terms of pulling the trigger. I am pretty sure that the next President, whoever he/she might be, will back off from this agreement and pull our bases out of Europe (especially out of those crazy Yugoslav countries). There is just no reason for it. The popular opinion is strongly against spending our money on Europe's defense. All we will ever get back from it is a negative reaction from the Europeans, so let them take care of themselves from now on.

It might be more beneficial to have an agreement with them (Russia) rather than the USA, don't you think ?

I think Poland had already tried this way of thinking after WWII. (1945-1990?) From what I know, it didn't work so well for Her. As a matter of fact, She is still trying to recover from that mistake as we speak. Russia is a thread to the World again, especially to smaller independent states. What just happened to Georgia is a clear example of Russia's real intentions.

But then again, you should suit yourself.
