Real Estate / Prices of apartments in Krakow are collapsing further down in 2010-2011 [150]

Both my girlfriend and her sister have inherited apartments in Krakow. About a quarter of her friends at nursing college own apartments here, something thats impossible in the UK at their age range (early 20's). Her parents own another apartment as well as being provided with accommodation as part of her father's job (Forest Ranger).

Food / Foreign foods in Krakow - where to buy kangaroo meat, Vegemite? [28]

Dutch oven Refried Beans
David Herzog

Thats a pretty complex menu. I make them by adding cooked beans to fried onions, garlic and spices. Mash up the beans and its done. There are several recipes on the web.

If you want specialist food like Mexican its best to find online recipes and buy the spices in the UK or online, although many are available here.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

Poles just rub their hands and smile when they hear a foreigner is interested in purchasing their real estate.. greed works both ways.

Which is why I delegated buying our house to my girlfriend and their family. Still, our offer was 10% over asking price. The seller got 5x the value of her mortgage and we got a house an 2.5ha for a very good price.

I wouldn't worry, Ola is a peasant.

They don't seem to care that the site owners could be jailed for whats posted on here. I suppose until someone complains it won't happen.

Its you who would like to censor argument, this is a open discussion forum where all views can be expressed, not just yours.
I quess you would like a forum where discussion is censored, like during the commie days,
get a life will ya.

So such thing as free speech. Post something that is criminal in one EU country and you can be extradited and jailed in another. Inciting racial hatred is a crime in the UK.

Two UK residents tried to escape to the US after running a racist website from the US - they were extradited back to the UK.

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

According to the latest data published by Eurostat, Poland will need 55 years to catch up with the standard of living in Germany.

In 2008, a Pole could afford only 55 percent of what an average EU citizen could. This is the worst result in the EU, with the exception of Romania and Bulgaria. The study shows that in 1997 the standard of living in Poland amounted to 47 percent of the EU average, meaning that Poland is catching up only 1 percent a year.

The data also reveals that one of the most significant factors hindering development is unemployment. The report states that only 57 percent of those aged up to 65 actually work.

Oh, dear, basic maths is obviously not that journalists forte.

Compound interest, with Poland having a 5% higher growth rate than, say Germany, will require only 13 years to catch up. Also, in the early years Poland presumably had a slower rate of growth than it currently has.

One of the worst in the [b]developed[/b ]world

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

eems like Mr Brown (who is he you might ask) our unelected Prime Minister and Mr Obama have got a plan to save the world. Pity he didn't know about the plan months ago then the UK in particular could be in a better financial state instead of the mess we have got now.How can it be that a democratic country like the UK has an unelected Prime Minister?

You obviously don't know anything about the UK's democratic system. We don't elect Prime Ministers, never have, never will.

We elect MP's who select their leader. Simple.

News / Should Poland send volunteers to Georgia ? [100]

The US acknowledge that on the break up of the Soviet Union Georgia was an internal affair as it was part of Russia for so long.

The Georgians didn't want to be part of Russia (in 1991/92) so they split, however the Ossetians did not want to be part of Georgia. They fought to be autonomous from Georgia in 1992 and have been ever since. Why can Georgia demand independence, but Ossetia cannot??

Georgia is trying to force Ossetians to be become part of Georgia, the violence has been going on for years, last month they kidnapped four Russians. Bombings, shootings, shelling. They have been playing a very dangerous game.. that they cannot win.

The mad president Saakashvili has brought war on his country, Russia is entitled to bomb the **** out of Georgia for what it has done. WTF did Saakashvili think he was doing??

Georgians expecting NATO to defend them, in a war they started...

UK, Ireland / Sad or stupid - a Polish teacher killed whilst urinating on live rail [88]

Hmmm.... public toilets around Vauxhall are probably best avoided (lots of seedy gay / fettish clubs in that part of town).

People go to those clubs to dance and do drugs but there is nothing seedy about them.
There is also outside urinals at the bus station.

Travel / Ryanair cancelling flights to Poland at short notice [55]

peterweg:
hedge their fuel

Please explain this term.

They enter a contract to buy fuel at a fixed price for a set period. Many airlines have agreements giving they fuel at a fixed price far below the market price. Jet2.com are paying something like the equivalent of $60 a barrel for the next 2 years whereas the market price is $125 at present.

I think "NORMAL" people book in advance and can get good deals with most airlines.

But in the current crisis an airline like Ryanair will simply cancel the flight if its un-economic for them, and their fares do not cover the cost of the fuel.

Ryan was once cheap. Not any more. But whatever. They're still sh!t

Indeed and in fact its now cheaper to use the train to get to the south of France (for instance).

Travel / Ryanair cancelling flights to Poland at short notice [55]

do you get your money back if they cancel your flight?

Yes but obviously with a week to re-book they will be far more expensive.

BA from Gatwick to Krakow £393, Easyjet from Gatwick to Krakow £175.......More than a 'couple of quid' wouldn't you say.

And £200 from Ryanair (I double checked on the same dates Ryanair are more expensive than EJ). BA are £275

Credit crunch and high airport charges?

Thats the smoke screen. Ryanair don't hedge their fuel (as the Ryanair boss puts it "hedging is for ******* gardeners") so they have been paying the full price of $140 - unlike most airlines that have contracts at $50-60.

So basically Ryanair are losing money hand over fist and trying to squeeze it out of their customers and the airports.

JET2.com fly to Krakow from Leeds Bradford from £100 return including taxes.

They came out top in a "Which" ( consumer magazine ) report about budget airlines.

Jet2.com are paying very little for their fuel (they hedged the price for next two years) so they will stay competitive.

Ryanair are unique among all the airlines as Mike O'Leary has taken a massive gamble on fuel prices and lost, to the tune of over a billion Euro's.

Travel / Ryanair cancelling flights to Poland at short notice [55]

In addition to the already announced cancelling of flights from many airports over winter, Ryanair seem to be cancelling flights that are un-economic for them. My friend from Krakow has been warned of a cancellation and it seems to be in relation to Ryanair's financial difficulty and depute with various airports about charges.

(Ryanairs fuel bill, this year, 2.5Billion euro, will exceed last years entire income from all sources, they are in serious trouble)

Basically, be warned Ryan may drop flying to some airports altogether and they are entitle to do it under their terms and conditions.

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

Poland is going to get hit harder that Western European countries by the coming recession. Newer, small economies always do because the investment (which is driving the growth) dries up quicker.

Scotland would be in surplus and so Independance would make Scotland better off.

Then why doesn't Scotland become independent?

If you read your source - it says that Barnett is flawed and doesn't take account of taxes generated..

Which neatly sidesteps that Scotland generates less than England.

Say that nationalist get their way and Scotland becomes independent. Then what? what exactly has Scotland to offer economically to business based on the far edge of the EU? Geographically its a major disadvantage. Oil is running out fast, Fishing is owned by the EU. Wind power is definitely Scotlands biggest asset, but Nuclear Fission could wreck that in 20 years.

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

Scotland produces ten times the amount of hydrocarbons that it consumes, yet ferry services to Europe are being cut due to the price of fuel.

Following the rise in the price of oil, Scotland is now contributing 4 billion pounds more to the UK economy and only getting increased fuel prices in return - crazy !

'Scotland's fury' over fuel costs

Scotland is part of the UK, you know? England has been subsidising Scotland since the union, oil revenue will never repay the money paid to support Scotland over the decades. The difference in Tax revenue from Scotland and what is spent is £5 billion, so Scotland is STILL costing the UK money.

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

£1.08 a litre over here in rip off Britain. Mind you that's cheaper than mineral water in most restaurants

£1.17 now.

If you take the historical price of Whale oil (which served the same function at the beginning of the 19th century) at over $1000 per barrel, then oil is still very very cheap.

The energy equivalent of a barrel of oil is a 7 man-years physical labour.

An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.

Yes that will work. Which half of the US population is going to give up oil consumption completely to cover the shortfall? Half of US oil is imported, in a few years Saudi Arabia will be the only source for those imports..

The world would say "thank you" if the US stopped consuming it at twice the rate of most western countries (the EU). So do it.

Travel / Central Wings cancel certain flights to Poland [38]

The era of cheap flights is over, most of the low cost airlines will go bust over the next few years, plus some of the bigger ones as well. They simply are cut out for $130 oil.

UK, Ireland / Man found guilty of the kidnap and murder of his former Polish girlfriend [23]

She was only 21. I'd like to think that I've always been pretty streetwise, but even I made a lot of mistakes at that age.

People should realise that blackmail is a a crime just below murder and akin to kidnapping. Getting involved with it, means you are descending to the law of the jungle. He might have been facing 5-10 years in jail and there is always the risk that the blackmailer would come back for more.

Sure she was young, but there are many obvious dangers that any adult should avoid - walking in front of train, jumping off cliffs, playing Russian roulette.

I don,t condone violence , but a slap round the head might have been more appropriate than sticking a knife in the girl and setting her on fire,,,

Slapping her was the cause of the whole situation. In fact there is only two ways of stopping a kidnapper, calling the police and what happened here. Obviously he had reason to doubt the police would help.

UK, Ireland / Man found guilty of the kidnap and murder of his former Polish girlfriend [23]

Yes of course it's a serious crime and I don't condone her attempts at blackmail, I just wonder at what caused her to try it. Some people do it out of badness, some out of desperation.

Naivety, apparently. Blackmail is akin to sticking a knife in someone neck and demanding money. Some people will pay, others will fight very, very hard for their life.

She obviously didn't understand the risk.

unfortunately there still remains the belief amongst certain elements of the british population that we didnt build our empire by letting foreigners take the p!ss out of us

Don't detract from the fact that the guy is obviously a psychopath.

>>Although, maybe in her mind she thought if she could get the £1000 it would be enough money to get away from him for good. Who knows?

Blackmail is Blackmail regardless of the amount involved. Its a serious crime and a very dangerous one.
