News / Daffy and Donald aka Lech and Jarosław Kaczyński together on tape, thoughts? [26]

they were abducted by aliens?

I don't know Seanus - are Kaczynskis this unpalatable for the Westerners - what do you actually know about them - not just what you are being served by some international media? - they may have their wrongs and bads but still they are not half as cynical as Mr Tusk and his school

Ksysia you really are a magnet of insults ;)

be patient and forgiving Ksysia though

oh and that's me who called you a naive girl, remember ;)

oh and Ksysia I have no doubt you are Polish

Life / Poland's westernization [44]

The only potential danger is too much intervention by the RCC.

no - it's not even a potential danger Seanus - I have never seen a court verdict in Poland influenced by church pressure - I see other threats to justice here - if you don't follow Polish developments closely over longer period you are prone to not being aware of these

Life / Pre Paid Visa cards [27]

I don't understand why more banks don't offer a prepaid credit card.

perhaps because of the costs involved in the implementation and not enough expected returns due to little interest in the public

Visa Electron is a different story.

it worked for me as a credit card on a couple of occasions buying on the internet
- can't say would work that way every time

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in UK. Ch. 1 - Staring [43]

Next day I went to Camden Town and this time I was taking good care to check all the people out up and down, paying attention to look at their bodies, especially legs. They loved it. They immediately started smiling at me, showing off their clothes.

weird, makes you think people these people are quite shallow

Life / Which Polish Season you love the most (weather) [12]

But the most I love temperature under -15 C,

I do love winter say up to two months of it a year ;) but I hate thaws and cold-and-wet conditions - I love biking in the countryside

Life / Minisurvey about living in Tricity (Sopot, Gdynia, Gdansk) [26]

I've heard all along that Gdansk bay is just for the tourists, while the Poles avoid the dirt and head North or to the Hel Peninsula.

Hel is much too expensive (sort of elitist). Most Poles go to places like £eba, Ustka or places further west (Mielno, Kołobrzeg, Niechorze etc etc). I should also mention locations east of Gdańsk (like already mentioned here Sobieszewo which is within Gdańsk limits) Krynica Morska, Ustronie

Trixity

there is a company in Gdańsk near the airport which makes computer based learning systems and sells them in the whole Europe and even further something like Digital Youth - they employ people who translate things into English - with your IT background you can apply to them for a proofreader position -

ok checked them out - it's Young Digital Planet
be patient their website is pretty slow - they are based in Słowackiego 175 which is on the way from Wrzeszcz to the airport (on the right side of the road, new building complex, just behind a pretty big stretch of a forest and a railway crossing) - they have two business units - the one you could be interested in is Young Digital Planet International

Life / Which Polish Season you love the most (weather) [12]

especially when it is not raining everyday - then october can be really beautiful - I have some photos of a sunny october day a couple of years back - perhaps will leave links to them some time soon (or miniatures) - the colours may really be amazing

Love / Abuse in relationships (my first Polish girlfriend) [216]

anyway any such relationship is crap

well, I meant it's flawed :) was willing to write fast and somehow could not find a good word to describe relationship with violence involved (that tells something about my English skills one can observe hehehe - and I am a proud holder of CAE certificate, goodness me ;) heheh)

Love / Abuse in relationships (my first Polish girlfriend) [216]

That was the thinking in the past but unfortunately you are way out of date on how things are now. Thanks to feminism, even restraining a woman who is beating on you can get you in trouble.

yes this is exactly the thing I reckon - men don't hit back not only because they don't want to resort to violence (which many actually don't want) - but also because of fear of getting in trouble (courts in Poland are very feministic - means often not objective) - for most in this situation it would not be difficult to hit back - anyway any such relationship is crap

Language / Learning Polish Quickly [12]

Is it really possible though to learn polish in two months? If you're doing it 8 hours per day even?

I don't know- I can't say it isn't cause a couple years back I met two Mornon preachers in Opole (both Americans) and they spoke pretty reasonable Polish - I asked how long did they learn - and they replied a couple of weeks (was 8-10 from what I vaguely remember) - I was frankly quite impressed - they attended some intesive course but can't tell what was the method applied

History / Are Poles the ones who understand Russians better than anyone? [35]

Slavs originated from the Finno Urgic people,

hmm interesting view - but rather false - Slavic languages have nothing to do with Finno-Ugric language family - Slavic languages are Indo European while Finno-Ugric are not

Language / How does Polish sound to you? How to make Polish sound more pleasurable? [100]

But as far as I know rz and sz are pronounced exactly the same.

"rzyć" (arse) does not sound the same as "szyć" (to saw)
rz is the same sound as ż

rz and sz sound the same at the end of words (because voiced conconants become voiceless in that position)

so piekarz (baker) sounds 'piekasz'

News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

Slowianin comes from the word "sława" which means fame

noone really knows where does the name come from

might be that it comes from 'słowo' (a word) - meaning people who speak intelligible language as opposed to 'Niemcy' (dumb=unable to speak)

Travel / Zakopane in April [7]

cold streaks with wet weather can happen as late

and I mean really cold (for late May or early June) - not freezing but sure below 10 degrees (in the middle of a day)- combined with wet weather if you get soaked and you're out in the mountains it's hardly pleasant

this year April in Poland was sort of tropical - some 40 days of constant sunny weather well into May with temperatures up to 30 degrees - but it can be very different

Love / Traditional wedding rings in Poland [11]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_ring

the article in Polish about the very same thing (i.e. Polish wikipedia) gives a lot of examples where rings are worn on the right and where on the left hand

Work / Would it be hard to work in Poland if I don't speak Polish? [17]

I think it would be difficult for you to find a job in your field here - and yes - it is because of the language

but you can try - there is some gas and oil exploration (and soon development) going on by foreigh (British, American, Aussie) capital in Poland - try searching the internet for Kulczyk gas field Poznań for example or maybe search for Petrobaltic they have some small rigs in the Baltic sea

Travel / Gdansk - need some information about it [21]

Gdańsk - the home of Solidarity (the dockyard) has the biggest medieaval church in Poland (guess it's the biggest brick church in Poland) Mary's Church in the Old Town - can't remember the name of the street (also in the Old Town) which is called 'amber street' not far from the church - Gdańsk is pretty (or at least was in the old times) famous for its amber jewelry and similar - one important fact is that much of the Old Town has been rebuilt after substantial war damage (it was not actually damaged during combat but that's a different story) to emulate the looks it had before the war - you will personaly be able to jugde the result - Oliva borough of Gdańsk is a home of organ music festival (one of the biggest and oldest organ preserved in Poland)

Travel / Zakopane in April [7]

2) What sort of weather can I expect? Obviously if it was still snowing I would have to call it off, but the last time I was in Krakow in April the weather was gorgeous, just wondering if that was an exception to the rule, or April is usually nice?

can be quite chilly with rain or even snow (also in May - cold streaks with wet weather can happen as late as the begining of June)

Language / Verb forms and conjugation [28]

the confounding idioms as well as the phonetic confusion between 'v' vs.'b' in pronunciation.

this one is terrible - I was once interviewed for a job in Germany by a Spanish lady - I don't know why they did such thing - she kept saying erweiten instead of arbeiten - I was completely lost and I did not qualify for the job

Still a beginner.
I'v got my head around masc/fem/neut in Nominative and Instrumental....then accusative comes out of nowhere!

I'm reviewing everything, at the moment, by taking a look at my completed assignments and starting using HURRA books 1.

makes you think immersion and mimicking is the best way to learn Polish - well you need some reference from time to time of course (maybe constantly ;)
