UK, Ireland / Polish people on North of England? [22]

iwona,

A small part of it is old English and there are some Viking words too.

Most regions in the UK have words and phrases that confuse foreigners.

Another problem with North-East folk is that they seem to have invented their own grammar.

Food / favorite polish recipes? [65]

Rossi,

Christmas in Poland is a little different in each region. Find out where your guest comes from and then you'll get it right. With tips from us of course. :)

Love / Dating a Polish girl - need some advice [45]

If you can't love two different people, you can depend on them but for different reasons.
Also, if you are liberated and young you might think [while one partner isn't looking] that you can have the best of both worlds.

There are plenty people who go two-timing.

This of course doesn't help David2312. But, David2312 you said you won't change and you said she is scared of changing her life.

She should think about her true feelings. He should show a little more compromise.

But on the other hand, was she just looking for a friend and it went too far.

David2312, you have to talk to her.

Life / How do Polish view others [116]

vito,

I'm trying to get a better understanding of this. I understand that at the end of WW II many people were moved from the east of Poland and part of Ukraine to west Poland.

I just thought that after sixty years these people or there family [nowadays] would have a positive opinion of Ukraine. Not because they were moved [no-one would like that] but because they are proud of their roots.

On the other hand, I can quite understand your anger with regard to Ukraine.
You may think me naive on this subject but I'm willing to learn. :)

Vito,

I've read the link. Now I understand.

Thanks.

Life / How do Polish view others [116]

Kowalski,

Ukranians: In this part of Poland many people have Ukrainian heritage. So it seems strange to me that they are on the 'dislike' list.

I'd like to hear PF members thoughts on this. :)

News / Countries in Europe where abortion is allowed/not allowed? [110]

polishmancan,

In Poland the government is offering a bounty to families who have children. I'm not sure how much it is. But the low birth rate here is a problem. Yet, no-one is taking up the offer.

A career comes first, then a home, then maybe marriage and children. as I said in my original post the answer to the problem is wealth/money.

From my point of view Polish families have always been small [at least in the last twenty years] and I don't see it changing for some time.

I have no idea how much a change in the law, regarding abortion, would change the birth rate. I doubt that you would notice a difference though.

What people have been telling you seems to ring true with me, but I can't speak for the rest of Europe.
The issue of our GDP needs to be thought about in a different way. I know nothing about economics so I'll let someone else deal with it.

Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

I don't know how anyone from Poland can say that they don't celebrate birthdays. I defy anyone to tell me that they did not celebrate their 18th birthday.

The only time it didn't happen was during Advent. And that was only in strict catholic families. And that was years ago.

Much of what the original article says is true of most places I've visited. In fact, for me, the only typically Polish activity is 'kissing on the hand', which we hardly see these days.

More familiar is the 'nod of the head' to a neighbour or friend. This is something I see on a daily basis. Very occasionally you might meet a young woman who will 'bend a knee'.

News / Countries in Europe where abortion is allowed/not allowed? [110]

polishmancan,

I'm not quite sure of the point you are making. Are you saying that there is a connection between birth rate and abortion ?

If so, then I disagree. Birth rate is connected to wealth.

I won't say any more in case I've missed the point.

Life / Tv/Radio service fee in Poland ("abonament") [12]

Kowalski,

When I have spelling problems I just write the word in the [toolbar] search box and press search.
When the page comes up it will give you a list of sites. then you know the spelling is correct.
If you misspell a word it will say ' Did you mean .......... ' And there you have it.

With this forum you can start a post, do a search, and then go back.

It works for me :)

Edit: I've just realized that I use English Yahoo. I don't know what will happen through a Polish page.

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

madziula,

Do you think that Wroclaw [the city, not me] is doing the right thing by paying people to come back ?

My opinion is: No

I don't want an arguement. I'd just like to read your thoughts on this matter, as it will help me to understand a young persons opinion.

Genealogy / Looking for Olbrys relatives [7]

wentka,

I checked the shipping records and there are a few people from Gousk. So the spelling is good. I just can't find it on a map yet. I will find it though, but not today.

It once took me a month just to find a small village in Ukraine !!!!!!!!!!!

Genealogy / Looking for Olbrys relatives [7]

Guest,

Is that born in Russia or at a time of Polish partition ? many people left Poland with place of origin: Prussia, Germany, Austria etc.

Dates are important here.

What city/town/place do you think your family came from ?

The place name may have changed too.

Love / Do Polish men have a problem with Tatto's on women? [47]

bossie,

I was trying to make the point that women are still getting tattooes :)

The prisoner thing that Iwona and I mentioned is surely correct. I've heard it more than once. I was talking about a period sixteen years ago and a stereotype that existed before then. :)
