History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

truhlei

I noticed you make a LOT of spelling mistakes. Why don't you consider using a spell-checker (or Firefox which automatically underlines misspelled words).

USA, Canada / Currently living in Canada, but wanting to live in Poland... [5]

I don't think such "au-pair"-type programs aren't very popular in Poland yet. Poland is still too "poor" country so that families could afford that. Add quite big unemployment rate. But you could try a Polish language school - learn Polish during the day, and enjoy Poland at the same time. You'd have to have enough money though, but it could be a good experience for you.

Life / New Car prices and the Import Taxation in Poland [5]

It seems it's best to import expensive cars - if you try to import an "average" car, the total cost would be about the same as if you bought it in Poland. So the more expensive car, the best to import it.

Love / Do Polish men like aggressive women? [26]

I think this thread has the potential to be interesting....

If you register, you may find another busy topic (The sex room) interesting too - but I think it's only accesible by members.

Feedback / What PolishForums Looked Like in the Early Days :) [11]

Nice find - I myself posted as guest back then too; then I secured my username. The old background seemed too bright for me; the current one is good.

One thing hasn't changed - a lot of "translation vultures" both now and then.

Language / The final "ę" [29]

It sounds unnatural if you pronounce "ę" at the end of a Polish word - you should just stick to "e."

Travel / A Winter Visit to Poland? [4]

I think for most people Poland in winter isn't very fascinating. Especially if you don't like winter sports..

Travel / Mafia taxis in Warsaw [11]

It's not very likely you would get robbed, but I would say you'd have to pay much more if you chose a "regular" car. Or the driver would drive you around Warsaw so that you pay more for the longer distance. Another possibility, the driver could drive you to a hotel he's "cooperating" with (if you don't specify which hotel you want).

UK, Ireland / What Famous Polish People live in London? [6]

As I remember some famous Polish singers may still live in London. Edyta Gorniak or Anita Lipnicka, for example.

Tomasz Kuszczak is the Arsenal goalkeeper. You may add Agata Wrobel (former weight-lifter champion) to the sports people.

Study / A foreigner in Poland as a student... [5]

I think it will take a little more time for some Poles (even the young ones) to get the meaning of the word "tolerance." It seems some of them are jealous girls like you or are interested in you more than in them (after all who would be interested in drunks or punks). The societies in Poland, as you mention, should understand all visitors or tourists bring them money and business; they should teach their kids that without customers they won't prosper. So I would just ignore them and just focus on your study and hobby.

News / What do the Poles Think about the Polish Politicians? [13]

Polish media are not much different from media of other countries. If they feature news from abroad, they just translate them from other sources. Some media do it more, others less correctly ("times is money," even with the cost of accuracy).

Life / Why don't Polish service workers smile? [36]

Why don't Polish service workers smile?

Maybe most of them don't understand you (if you speak in English to them) and are confused?

Life / Why don't Polish service workers smile? [36]

That's an excellent question. This is the first time a visitor to Poland (even a Polish person who's lived abroad for some time) notice. Some of them want to maybe show they are studiously doing their job and smile would not look professional? Maybe there's something in genes.

Travel / KRAKOW-visit next week [11]

1. a lot of choose from - i don't think any of them would be booked up at this time of the year.

2. i suggest you to take a visitor's guide and start from that. most attractions are in the market square area unless you want to visit Wieliczka, for example.

3. plenty of pubs, discos, restaurants. again - i would keep close to the center if possible.

4. popular foods like golabki, pierogi, bigos, schabowy ("pork chop"), there are good Polish fish (like "szczupak"). you'll get everything in a good restaurant.

5. this I don't know. Is it some kind of cigarette?

UK, Ireland / Should Polish immigrants learn English to work in the UK? [77]

But you don't suggest that just because Poles (for example) are part of the EU, they should not care about learning the language of the country they look for a job, do you. It will be a positive step overall, I think, regardless of the immigrant's nationality.

UK, Ireland / Should Polish immigrants learn English to work in the UK? [77]

I agree it will be a positive step for both immigrants and British people. People from the UK will have at least one less reason to complain (currently they complain Polish workers cannot understand them enough to do a good job).

Travel / Gdansk airport to the city [4]

I would take taxi - no waiting in line, easiest to get one. Maybe there's also a bus (I doubt it though), but then you'll have to spend more time than with taxi.

Food / Ordering Polish Food Online [14]

I would be interested in that myself. I know there are few good Polish stores in Florida. The prices online are about 2 times higher than in Chicago stores though. I wonder if they use any special freezers or something to ship the food to a hot state like Florida? Not sure how long the shipment takes. I think they suck out the air and foil everything. The sites you mention advertize quite aggressively online; it seems polana.com has been around for the longest time. If you try it, please post your experience.

USA, Canada / Polish immigrant's views on living in USA now - time to return home? [8]

Better cars, buses, trams.

Yes, last time I was quite surprised it was hard to find any "maluch" on the Polish roads any more...:).

Higher cost of living.

I'm not particularly joyful about that -- the weak US dollar was one of the main reasons I haven't visited Poland for the last couple of years...

USA, Canada / Polish immigrant's views on living in USA now - time to return home? [8]

I've lived in the US for about 8 years. It seems the standard of living here has decreased a little. It's harder to find a good job and "live on credit" as it used to be. Few Poles who go to the US think about working - they prefer to travel in the US instead because they get better money in the UK or even in Poland sometimes.

Will the Polish immigration to the US stop soon? Is it time to go back to Poland?
