I don't know... Neuter, I suppose?

"Mamry"

Not the lakes, but getting closer.

those "two ladies" aren't Poland and Russia by any chance?

More connected to another country.

I also think that without knowledge of that specific area it would be very hard to solve.

Yes, it was deliberate ;) I was planning to lead people towards the area with some clues, such as writing something in Cieszyn Silesian. But I was really motivated by encouraging anyone reading to learn more about Zaolzie - if you get the chance, I'd really recommend exploring the whole area, as it has a very very interesting feel about it, even down to the bilingual use of Polish and Czech.

'New' Skalmierzyce was a customs post on the border and adjoins Skalmierzyce.

Bingo :D For an extra point - what was the meaning of "you need to go next door to get your identity card"?

Now to think up another fiendish riddle...

Neuter, I suppose?

I think it has no singular, so it is either the "niemęskoosobowy" or perhaps the neuter gender. As it is incorrect to say 'Czechy jest pięknym krajem', you may well say 'Mamry jest dużym jeziorem' (or is it better to say 'Mamry są dużym jeziorem'?)..

I'd really recommend exploring the whole area, as it has a very very interesting feel about it

Quite recently I have bought myself a modern tourist map of the former Duchy of Teschen (Herzogtum Teschen). The Duchy of Cieszyn existed as an entity since 1290 and was divided only in 1918. A very interesting map as you can see on it how far the Duchy extended into the modern Polish or the modern Czech territory.

"you need to go next door to get your identity card"?

I hadn't forgotten that bit Delph, just been a bit short of time lately. To be honest I'm not sure what you mean by 'next door', but I'm sure it's not meant in the literal sense. To go to Kalisz maybe? I don't think I'm right though.

To go to Kalisz maybe?

Aha, very close :D You're more or less right - for some reason, the seat of the municipal administration is in Skalmierzyce, not Nowe Skalmierzyce. So people need to go 'next door' to pick up their ID cards.

I can see that my originally planned riddle makes no sense now as you'll almost certainly know it ;)

'Mamry jest dużym jeziorem'

The canal leads from the bunker complex at Mamerki, 4km away from the sluice at Leśniewo Górne.

The two ladies? The complex has two parts, the main part was called Anna and the part where the staff lived was called Brigitten Stadt (Bridget Town).

Kind of... but not quite.

It's not made of baked sand or clay is it?

the main part was called Anna and the part where the staff lived was called Brigitten Stadt

Aha! Good riddle :)

@Ziemowit, to make things more complicated this lake is part of a cluster of lakes also called "Mamry" - which is plural... According to prof. Miodek the name "Mamry" comes from an old Prussian word for "mud".

@jon357, wow, I don't think I would've guessed it...

@Chemikiem, it's not made of baked sand or clay - you were right before - it's "made" of stone, but it's not man-made. As I wrote at the beginning when I posted the riddles - both the Bieszczady riddle and this one are nature-related :) But it's not just a rock - it's more than that.

But it's not just a rock - it's more than that.

It's not a piece of sandstone is it?

I thought about this some more today. I thought about fossils but couldn't see anything on the surface, so I wondered if the whole thing might be a fossil. My last guess, it's a fossilized egg and you saw it on display in some sort of museum? Geological/fossil museum?

My last guess, it's a fossilized egg

Yes, it is a fossilized dinosaur egg and most likely in a museum.
Good job Pam.

it's a fossilized egg

Yes!! I was about to give another hint, but you've guessed it before that, yay :D

display in some sort of museum? Geological/fossil museum?

Yes, it was a small museum with fossils, but it was just part of a bigger complex. Can anyone guess what kind of complex it is and where?

a fossilized dinosaur egg

Yup! :D The egg probably belonged to Saurolophus, was found in China and comes from the Late Cretaceous period.

The whole photo:

Can anyone guess what kind of complex it is and where?

I think the fossilised egg is in the Museum of Fossils and Minerals in Świętokrzyskie ( Holy Cross ) province. I think it's part of the Krzemionki archaeological complex, a Neolithic and early Bronze age complex of flint mines.

@Delph, I'll have to give this new riddle some thought.........

Krasiejów plays host to one of Europe's most impressive outdoor dinosaur parks.

Nope!

in Świętokrzyskie ( Holy Cross ) province

You got that part right :) But where exactly?

outdoor dinosaur parks

Yes, it's in an outdoor dinosaur park! But it isn't in Krasiejów :)

REM sang about this place.

Do you mean American band R.E.M.?
Paulina 16 | 4,373

I liked that band...

REM sang about this place.

Hmm, no idea... Was is the song "Radio Free Europe"?

Nope. :)

I'll let Chemikiem have a crack at this one first before giving another clue.

Although...This place stands on the edge of a Greater place.

I might be wrong and I've only just thought of this. Is the song ' It's the end of the world as we know it'? I just put ' Koniec Świata' into Google, and hey presto it's a town in Poland. It's on the Gdańsk bay at the end of the Vistula spit a few kms from the Russian border.

Is the song ' It's the end of the world as we know it'?

It is :D It's not the one up north - but you've more or less solved the riddle, so point to you ;) The one I was using is this one - goo.gl/maps/TjoqTHuAhWyAP9n29 - on the edge of Wielkopolska.

How on earth did you make that connection? :D I was certain that it was unsolvable with just that first clue!

How on earth did you make that connection?

I don't think I think along the same lines as most people! To be honest, I've solved lots of riddles by searching in Polish when I can't find the information in English. I thought about the song title and wondered if there would be a place in Poland called the end of the world, so I put it into Google. How bizarre is it that's there's more than one 'Koniec Świata' though!

Yes this thread is very entertaining but also educational on things Polish at the same time '

Very good all

I'm taking my hat off to you, that was an absolutely brilliant connection to make :D I mean, you did exactly what you were supposed to do (see 'the end of the world' and guess that there might be a place called that) - but still, bah ;) Pawian would be most disappointed!

but also educational

I'm trying to do exactly that - there's so much interesting Polish history and culture beyond the mass media stuff, and I think it deserves some promotion :)

I think he would be proud ;) Chemikiem is simply brilliant :)))

Yes, it is! It's educational even to Poles born and raised in Poland, I dare say :)

Once a teacher, always a teacher :))
