Holidays in Poland, is it still worth coming here?

Holidays in Poland, is it still worth coming here?
I have been on vacation in Poland for a few days and I admire the development of infrastructure in this country. Yesterday I was with my young son at the Auschwitz extermination camp. He wanted to go. As tragic as it is, it is something every anti-democrat in the world should see. Regardless of nationality or religion. In private conversations with Poles, I was struck by the political differences that ran even through families. This is not good. I'm going back soon to continue the rest of my holiday at the German seaside, I know I'll rest there in peace, because the Polish seaside is crowded after all.

because the Polish seaside is crowded after all.

It's summer Alien, of course the seaside is going to be crowded. When it's good weather people head for the beaches regardless of country. I've just got back from Italy, and the beaches were heaving.

To be honest, I've only been once to the beach in Poland, there's far more to do there for me than go to the seaside. I guess it depends what you're looking for.

Of course, but I can compare it with the beach in Świnoujście, which, despite being the largest, always seems chaotically crowded, and the beaches on the German side of the Usedom island, which are somehow less crowded.

Usedom island

I had to google this as I'd never heard of it.

German side of the Usedom island, which are somehow less crowded.

Maybe there is less development there? The larger and more popular beaches will always be more crowded.

I guess it depends what you're looking for.

I still think a holiday in Poland is worth it and I've been many many times. Of course, if you are holidaying with children you will be doing different things. Plenty of places I want to see yet.

Yes, very much so. We always do a couple of one-week holidays inside Poland each year and a couple of long-weekend city breaks too. Last summer we spent a week in a cottage near Dukla at the beginning of September and liked it so much we're going back to that area next month. We also did a week near Augustow last spring and the spring before that, at this cottage alohacamp.com/en/property/laspole-924

It's summer Alien, of course the seaside is going to be crowded.

If you want superb empty beaches, head up to the Outer Hebrides in early June. Berneray's West Beach matches anything you'll find in the Caribbean but it's empty. Last June we spent four hours walking along it and saw five other people.

The Baltic sea can be disappointing. It now looks more like a big lake and the water is cold. You may also try the Masurian Lake District as it may be less crowded and you get what you expect from the region.

You may also try the Masurian Lake District.

Just make sure you expect mosquitoes.

A friend of mine was stationed at RAF Benbecula years back and said how lovely the beaches were.

Masurian Lake District

Somewhere else I haven't got round to visiting yet.

They're the best I've seen anywhere. The only problem is getting there: I usually fly to Glasgow, hire a car, stop somewhere overnight, then get a ferry the next day. You could also fly, but the non-subsidised seats are pricey and so's car hire on the islands. Also, as there are no direct flights from here to Glasgow, you need to go via Amsterdam or London (or Paris) and that extra time means you usually miss the flight from Glasgow to whichever island airport, so add in a night at a Glasgow airport hotel.

We spent our summer holiday this year in Scarborough. There were more than 5 people on the beach...

About Poland, Krakow has been spoilt by over tourism, however Torun and Lublin are very worth a visit.

Torun and Lublin are very worth a visit.

I was in Katowice again, with the most cars and the fewest traffic jams among the large cities in Poland, perhaps because the 10-lane highway runs almost through the city center.

I agree. Zamość too if someone is going to Lublin. It's only small but very beautiful.

The only problem is getting there:

My problem would be the ferry. I don't do boats. Last time I was on one I was very ill, completely lost my balance and could barely walk. A very memorable trip for all the wrong reasons. Anti-sickness tablets just put me to sleep.

10-lane highway runs almost through the city center.

There's a 10 lane highway in Katowice?

Yes, the A4 motorway within the city limits has, in addition to its three lanes on each side, two exit lanes extending along the motorway. In total, it makes a maximum of 10 lanes within the city limits.

Zamość is undeniably a beautiful miniature version of Kraków, my wife's birthplace. However, do not overlook the sinister Rotunda, a monument to human brutality, which, on a smaller scale, rivals Oświęcim in its depiction of human depravity.

do not overlook the sinister Rotunda, a monument to human brutality,

I did visit the Rotunda while I was there. Those atrocities should never be forgotten. Hence why it is now a museum.
