Latest spottings:
SAINT.
DEMON.
PAVI (not mine)
LYSA (bald female)
URIEL

and MACH whose car I saw on the side of the road and the driver talking to a police patrol about sth. I wonder what it might have been. Probably he had been flying too low.

Exactly. I wonder if later on such police officers brag at home to their families they stopped a guy with funny plates which proved sort of prophetic.
Also: CYGAN (gypsy)

I am a license plate geek from Germany and I am very familiar with license plates all over Europe, including Poland.

I know well about the syntax of Polish custom plates and discovered this thread, looking for the most funny or creative plates.

So I ask you the most funny or otherwise creative plates getting in your head, even if you didn't actually spotted them.
If possible, it would definitely great to include the Voivodeship letter and the subsequent digit, to one word.

For example, I thought about "tancerz" (Polish for "dancer") as T4 NCERZ. (Yes, I am a dancer)

For the digit after the Voivodeship letter, a digit resembling a letter is chosen: 0=O, 1=I, 2=Z, 3=E, 4=A, 5=S, 6=G, 7=T, 8=B, 9=U. (I propose to use 9 as U as it is the only vowel not represented by a number, and the only letter similar to a 9 - a lowercase "g" - is already represented by 6. So, e.g., "Rumba" could be written as R9 MBA.)

I am looking forward to your creative ideas.
(I've got this idea when I read about the plate N0 MERCY in a different thread)

@T4 NCERZ
T4 NCERZ will not function in Poland as TANCERZ.

will not function

I am afraid so, too.
But, on second thoughts.............

digit resembling a letter is chosen 4=A,

I have never associated 4 with A.

However, how about killing old habits??? If someone starts using it, then the followers will quickly imitate.

What's wrong with T4 NCERZ?

Replacing letters with similar looking numbers is known as leetspeak, mainly from internet (esp. in usernames). 0 for O and 1 for I (or, less common, L) are probably the most common usages, but every digit has a look-alike letter (though 4=A and 7=T are not perfect and 3=E is upside down).

and it is also used on license plates, depending how restrictive the patterns for license plates are in a specific country; it is common in, e.g., the UK, where the order of digits and letters on custom plates has some restrictions. I've heard of MR54 NTA in UK (54NTA mimicking Santa).

And you still could use T4 NCER2 as a substitute for T4 NCERZ if another dancer already grabbed the latter one.

(though 4=A and 7=T are not perfect

Yes, that`s the problem. I am a perfectionist and traditionalist by nature. :):):)
However, if you work on me and other Poles/ Polesses a bit longer, we will accept your 4=A coz old customs die hard in conservative Poland and we need time to adopt new approaches. :):):)

I could provide a lot of dance-themed custom plates. But I guess, the purists among you will kill me for writing Bachata as B4 CHA74.

No, I won`t kill you coz I am a humane ape. :):):) I will simply not understand it. Probably I am too old for such inventions. :(:(:(:(

you won't like B4 LL37 (ballet)

I won`t understand it either.

But don`t bother about my opinion. Younger generations will surely find common ground with your ideas. In Polish, we say: find common language.
Good luck for you innovative plates! :):):)

Apart from the dance plates, I've made something completely different, and created R2 ESZOW for the city of Rzeszów. And this plate could actually come from there!

The other cities which fit into a custom plate using leetspeak (and sometimes some tricks) are:

B1 ALSTK (Bialystok)
G0 YNIA, G0 ANSK (if we allow 0 as D), or G0 DYNIA, G0 DANSK (if we allow 0 as "nothing"/"I'm not there")
K0 RAKOW (as above)
C0 HLMNO (Chelmno, same)
L9 BLIN (see post #64 for the usage of 9 as U)
L9 BRTOW (Lubartow)
L3 CZNA (Łęczna)
L9 KOW
N1 DZICA
O1 ESNO
O0 POLE (Opole - also with 0 as void)
P0 ZNAN
P1 LA0 (need one extra character to fit minimum length)
P1 ESZEW
R2 ESZOW
S0 SNWIC (Sosnowiec)
W4 RSZWA (Warszawa/Warsaw)
W4 WER, W1 LANOW, W1 OCHY, W0 LA0 (districts of Warsaw)
W3 GROW
W0 LOMIN
W9 SZKOW (if we allow 9 as Y - I propose this for, e.g., English words, where Y acts as a vowel (and I used 9 for U as it was the only vowel without a similar digit) - and the actual 9 on Polish plates looks like a lowercase 'y' if the top part is cropped)
D2 IRZNW or D2 RZNOW (Dzierżoniów)

and with the use of the secondary letters which some voivodeships have

M1 DZCHD (Międzychód; M is the secondary letter of Greater Poland, the first one being P)

They look regular. B is for Berlin.

. B is for Berlin

Big cities always have only one letter at the beginning.

OK. What about EE? Is it the abbreviation for Berlin district?

No, it's probably a coincidence. But many cars in Germany have PIR-AT license plates and this is a normal license plate from Pirna which is so desirable that you have to pay extra for it.

A bribe?

bribe

No, "Wunschkennzeichen" for which you have to pay the city more money.
OP pawian  221 | 25994
17 Dec 2024   #86
Custom, then.
But to have them, you don`t need to reside in Pirna. As a Berliner, can`t you order B - Pirat plates???
Alien  25 | 6007
17 Dec 2024   #87
you don`t need to reside in Pirna

No, you have to live in Pirna, so it's not really a custom, it's just the city decided to make money off of it.
