Car Insurance for an US-import car in Poland

Hello...
I have recently bought an old car that was imported from the US in 2016 but never registered or driven in Poland. I have been trying to get it insured so that I can have it registered, but cannot find anyone who will insure it. The 2 brokers I have spoken to have not been able to help, and the online sites go into meltdown when I say it is unregistered and manufactured in 1984.

Any guidance / advice would be truly appreciated.
Thanks - Adrian

Warta insures cars with foreign registrations. If you can show them the US car title or registration document, even if expired, they should be able to issue you a policy. Go to one of the small independent brokers, not the main headquarters buildings. They won't ask to see the license plates, so just provide the last known plate numbers.

Once you get the car registered in Poland just go back and tell them that the license plate number changed and they will update the policy.

even if expired

Just dont cross the border or get caught by cops for speeding or an accident etc as even Polish cops now know that the car is with expired registration and can impound it.

from the US in 2016 but never registered or driven in Poland

Just make sure the car is legal and has papers from the customs(Uzad Celny) that they have authorized it to be in the EU,as I have to renew my authorization from customs every year for a year to drive with USA plates. Its very easy just send a certified letter with return receipt and you will get an answer in 1 week or there is a heavy fine almost 75% value of the car.

What are the requirements to renew an authorization to drive on USA plates? I didn't know this is possible.

I have had many interactions with the police here while in my car from the USA and I have never once been asked to show any proof of registration. I just show them the USA car title document (proof of ownership, not registration) and my ID and driving license and that's it. I can't imagine them going through the hassle of calling the US to check if the registration is expired. Not only would the call have to be made in English and within US business hours, but they would also have to be familiar with the fact that in the US there are 50 completely separate offices for car registration and only the one in the correct state could provide them with the information they seek.

I would say that those cops didnt know about the registration, but the cops by the eastern border know it esp crossing the eastern border.Do you have permission by the customs dept to have the car legally in Poland?or the orignal importer will get a letter with heavy fine even after 5/6 yrars when they catch up.BTW customs dept uses Car Fax site to determine the value of the car,you can check yourselfabout it and it will show that the car was exported to the port it was shipped to from the USA.

I had permission to have the car here legally on a temporary basis. I'm not sure what to do to renew this permission. Anyways I don't drive near the non-schengen borders.

Approach uzad celny at the gdynia port, most likely they will give you permission to take the car out of the EU,go to Ukraine and drive back in with new case file and keep on getting the permissions.
