Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

Poland is definitely NOT a commonwealth

a republic is a state or nation where the supreme power lies with its citizens;
a commonwealth is an allied group of republics

For example the Polish-Lithuanian Union was called the Commonwealth of Poland & Lithuania in the English speaking world.

not really as the official name was actually "Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania" but in reality it was more of a commonwealth then a true union (except between 1791-95)

Rzeczpospolita Polska = Res Publica Poloniae = Rebublic of Poland

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

Plk - what republics does the Commonwealth of Virginia consists of? How about the Commonwealth of Kentucky? ...Massachusetts? ...Pennsylvania?

they aren't states; they are in commonwealth with each other. and there is possibly some other arrangements in their county/parish systems but i am not that familiar with them but do know that their laws do not work the same way as other states' laws.

Rzeczpospolita they should've used more literal translations in other foreign languages too, in English the proper translation would've been the Commonwealth of Poland. Same meaning but more aesthetically and phonetically pleasing also more of a verbatim translation in each specific language.

not at all

poltran.com/odp.php4?q=2&direction=2&word=rzeczpospolita

poltran.com/odp.php4?q=1&direction=1&word=commonwealth

I guess the noun 'commonwealth' in English tends to express an idea of a union - the British Commonwealth, the Commonwealth of Independent States - which is what Poland used to be, but no longer is.

yeah, back in Mieszko I times.. lol

wealth (Rzecz)

rzecz = res = thing.. not wealth

but Rzeczpospolita and Republic just isn't the same

oh? it is, it is tho

Love / American woman falls in love with a charming Polish man upon his visit to the U.S. [36]

disillusioned

you got that right.. in love you are not. lust maybe and really just smitten. now, let it go..

P.S. Is it common for Polish men to ignore women they are not interested in?

a Polish custom? you jest...

you looked it up and still don't understand? really?

He signed the message, "Yours," and his name.

do you really need a lesson in enlish?

I know, you are not OK.

no shlt.. lol

Crazy. And I am not even divorced yet. I see now that I was disillusioned and sprinkle dusted with infatuation. Love is not rational, or I should say, infatuation is not rational.

i see that you actually are seeing it.. good for ya

Jednym z nich był Pan, który szukał pomysłu

One of them was the Lord, who was looking for an idea

one of them was you.. definitely not the lord

"Gentlemen" should be used.

talk about having to learn better polish.. gentlemen is not correct in this context at all.

This email speaks about person other than the recipient of the email.

no it doesn't fatso... if it was "someone/person" then it would have been "czlowiek: or something.. but it isn't and Pan is capitalized thus it's "you"

Gee plk123 - you didn't learned proper English and you have forgotten the Polish language - nice!

Food / Cooking Polish kiszka [99]

The one I purchase is gray in color (casing), and is irregular in shape...more like a blob than a well formed sausage.

Does anyone have experience buying it this way? I live in central Connecticut and always remember it being sold this way.

yeah, that's just one of the ways it comes in. nothing really unusual about it.

Feedback / How many hours a day do you dedicate for PF and how often? [21]

that many of you wants to cut off with PF... but can't stop posting here! The craving is too strong. So that's why I want to make a support group for such users. Who wants to subscribe and be the first patient???

believe me, it'll pass.. there aren't that many members here from even just a couple of years ago.. this place is kind of like a revolving door.

(I'd post an ad on PF, but it's bound to degenerate into some sort of massive argument)

lol.. ya think?

USA, Canada / American man with a Polish wife. Will children be dual citizens? [20]

Your post is confusing if not completely wrong. I hope you are not saying that a child born to a US citizen but not in the US is not a US citizen, because that would be false.

if not born on US territory, then one used to have to do the paperwork to become US citizen.. it may be different now though. territory means anywhere like US bases or protectorates or zone or what ever.. it used to not be automatic because of parents.
