Life / Best of two worlds - Poland and... Germany [29]

we were hoping she could either find a job in a private language school or do some private teaching. On either side of the river.

that's a toughy.. there a few threads about that here too and if not, ask seanus... he does it but it's not great dough and it's rather hard to even get what he gets.. there are problems with this in PL.. no idea about D.

History / Today is the 1st of September (WWII start in Poland) [138]

Well, last year the 20th anniversary of the first free elections was celebrated

right.. nothing to do with the nazis, this time.

There's a holiday.

i'd say., we should all celebrate it.. it was a glorious day,

otoh, it's my momma's b-day.. not the year, however.

So, am I correct that the 4th of June is being celebrated as the Liberation-event in Poland?

where did you get that?

if anything it should be either:

- May 7th 1945 - German unconditional surrender.

- April 30th 1945 - Hitler commits suicide.

So it's a militairy event?

yes.. a huge heroic battle

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Westerplatte

Is there actually a "Liberation Day" in Poland? I don't mean liberation of Communism, but the end of WW2?

july 22, iirc.. but like others said before, it was kind of a trade from one occupier to another.

Real Estate / Assets in Poland from abroad; possible to sell property without my knowledge? [11]

- If she owns an apartment in Poland, is it possible for her to give it to a relative or sell it without my knowledge?

definitely possible and highly probable.. i'm guessing you're going or about to go through a divorce.

- Is it possible for me (as her husband) the get information about her assets in Poland (Bank accounts and/or property)

may want to look into hiring a private investigator.. they can get that kind of info, when you may not be able to.

do it fast so she doesn't hide any of it.

Gorlitz sounds like a good pick&mix deal but be wary of catches ;)

that is my first thought too.. taxation could be a nighmare.. same with you wanting to use medical services on the side you aren't getting paid on.. the other thing, are there even any decent jobs in either town? i'm thinking, not many, based on the fact that Gorlitz population is still moving away.... of course it does depend what you do..

not sure if your wife lives with you in Norge but living in PL may be even bigger shock then for you.. there is more of a difference between USA and PL then Norway and PL..

but, good luck. :)

btw. great topic and first of its kind here, iirc.

Germans are a bit richer

but the east germany isn't as rich as the old west is..

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

Oh forget about it....this plebiscite was controlled and observed by the League of Nations and counted as fair and square in the end.

that is not what the conclusion was.. that's why the protest and then a win..

but they chose Germany!

i don't have a problem with that. it's all good as far as i am concerned.

Yeah..they were the majority in many places...who had no interest to live in a polish state...how bad of them! How dare they to skew the votes like that!!! :(

no, it was these "silesians" that really weren't that cast their "votes".. you know, Chicago style.

Not wanting to live in a polish state had many Silesians actually in common. Millions left Poland over the decades to live in Germany!

got kicked out after ww2.. yes, i'll give you that. but klose and podli left under communism.. just like millions of other poles.. nothing unusual there.

But there are plans with TGV also:

well, that will take a long time and a boat [ ;) ] load of Z£. but it would be nice, for sure and that would help Lodz grow.

After World War II, Polish authorities banned the use of the German language altogether

but that's not silesian.. it's not me who is having comprehension problems.

Terrorize one generation into Poles and you make sure the next generation grows up as Poles, speaking polish....there is nothing new in that...

but they aren't speaking polish but silesian.

they voted overwhelmingly for staying in Germany...:)

because the germans monkeyed with the votes.. you even said that yourself earlier.. thus it didn't really count..

lower silesia was more german because you guys germanized it. ;P :D

cart before the horse obviously.. you need rails before those trains can run.. they weren't going to put them on the old tracks, were they? hmm

(£ódź Fabryczna railway station was to demolish and go undergound).

no kidding? i was just looking at that on googlemapsPL and it wasn't up to date then...

There was a plan to built a modern conference hall but the idea was given up because of its costs (that's why Camerimage has moved to another city)

still may happen, no?

It was few years ago when the govern of the city claimed that whithin 2 or 3 years the journey time from Lodz to Warsaw would last less than 30 min.
Corruption, political wars, street pathology

do you have any idea what kind of undertaking that is? if everything was in place, it would take at least that long to construct the line.. just buying up the land can take that many years... hell, it took 30 years or more to build the metro in W-WA.. my mom designed it when i was teeny-tiny.

Welcome to £ódź!

it's not that bad.

bollox. there is no machismo in polish culture.

lol. are you sure?

You are playing dumb now, aren't you? ;)

Just read some more and inform yourself....you have alot of catching up to do.

who is playing dumb and who needs to catch up? see below bud.

/wiki/Silesian_language

you must not have read your own link; thanks for proving i am right once again:

Slavic language spoken in the region of Silesia.

Silesian became "polish" by force after 1945...that means the language and the land. It was not polish before, neither the language nor the land. It's called "polonization"!

the language got polonized? i thought it was surpressed? which is it? can't really be both.

You are the product of this brainwashing.

not at all.. just because germans took it from PL (or slavs) for a few centuries, doesn't make it german. or is it "once german, always german"? like the russkies and the chinese?

Since Million of real Silesians left and where substituted by eastern Poles and 50 years of skewed commie education I'm pleasantly surprised some still do remember....

ok delph... so now because poles live there, the silesian language all of a sudden changed to polish dialect? niiice. lol it's that last statement of mine that got you worried, isn't it? ;) :D

You really seem to have a hard time accepting Silesians and Silesians past as what they were, why is that???

not at all.. i see it for what it is. not some wishful thinking that it's more german then anything.. :)

But seriously in Warsaw you have plenty of nice places, the same as it goes for Cracow.

lodz does too.. you're in denial.. and i know how it is when you're young and see greener grasses everywhere but your own backyard.. you'll find out they just aren't.. katowice certainly does not have greener grass.

to where?

englandia.. have you been sleeping? find his "after 5 years.. " thread.

why would I go there?

that's what he said afterwords.

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

I understand if they feel different to the "ordinary" peasant Poles from further East....

they don't feel different at all.. their language is not german.. very much PLish dialect, like i said.. can you understand anything they said? click that silesia radio link.. can you understand any of the writing?

.Poles re-discover their german heritage..so does Silesia! :)

the funny thing is that now you're in denial.. the truth is:

My greatparents spoke a silesian german dialect too...it died out with them sadly! :(

that you're probably actually more polish then german.. sorry bud.. i know this news has to be hard for you to take.. but keep hanging around here, brother kraut, we'll change you into bigos yet. ;) :D :D
