News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Yes exactly, that is what I have been saying and no-one should have the right to play God.

That analogy would only work if people would adhere to it completely, which means that no one would interfere with the fate of those children at all. Yet children born with physical effects are not simply left to die, but thanks to modern medicine live a lot longer than if they'd receive no care. However this can also lead to a prolonging of suffering and children, who might not even have survived birth are now left to suffer perhaps for years or possibly decades.

If a system that can afford to pay 100 of 1000 prisoners not to mention other groups it can hardly be broken by very few children that would be born with a need of life long support.

Prisoners are usally relatively cheap, since they live in large facilities that are often cost-effective and require not much work from individual workers. That is why it is e.g. cheaper in the USA to send someone to life in prison than to execute him, because the bureaucratic and legal process for the death penalty is way more expensive. And nevermind that there is no alternative to having prisons since you can't execute everyone who breaks the law (and even then you would need a prison to house them).

The same counts for the care of disabled children. Intensive care for a child (e.g. for those who need machines et. al to life) costs easily for than sending someone to prison for decades. And those who live longer and require not so much medical help, the expenses are still significant. E.g. if they go to a special school, they'll need trained personal, and they might not be able to earn their money for their entire life. So in short, another myth busted.

@Atch

, that child when it becomes an adult, stroking its head and wiping the saliva from its face.

That is precisely the problem. People might have some patience with a mentally disabled person, e.g. when he does something stupid in public, but once he becomes an adult that changes- The disabled child I knew never understood the concept of "paying" for something, so whenever he was hungry he went to a supermarket, took something and left. As long as he was a child, the supermarket had patience with him and simply sent the bill to his parents. But once he was above a certain age, they started calling the police and eventually banned him from entering the supermarket, something he did not understand either. The person in question was otherwise very kind and nother caused others trouble, but this was a real problem, because we lived in a small village with not much options. His parents eventually bribed the owner to still let him in, because otherwise he would not be able to go on a small walk unsupervised, but this would not be an option for family with small income.

I'll never understand how anyone can take Farage seriously, or even has the slightest respect for him. Especially after reading this interview.

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

Somehow no one is bringing it up as a sign that Markel and Germany are unfit to lead EU, or to question their commitment to the EU

Why should anyone bring up this fact when Merkel has been instrumental in coordinating the European response to Russia's agression? She was always critical of Putin, and she is the only Western politician he actually respects for her strength. No doubt future historians will look at the recent tension between the EU and Russia as a great rivalvry between Putin and Merkel.

If not for her, the EU probably would not have shown any coherent reaction. And why should people doubt the commitment of Germany to the EU, when it is the one country holding the EU together?

This article will answer most of your questions regarding Merkel:

Putin and Merkel: A Rivalry of History, Distrust and Power

nytimes.com/2017/03/12/world/europe/vladimir-putin-angela-merkel-russia-germany.html

now the powerhouse of Europe and admired by so many here on the forum and Europe wide.

Indeed, interesting how countries and people can change over generations. Kind of gives someone hope for the future, doesn't it?

@Ironside

ou are surely kidding here

Why should I? Without Germany, the Euro would have broken up, and Germany is paying the most for the upkeep of the EU.

I just wonder what they are trying to achieve by attacking Poland

Nobody is attacking Poland, if anything Poland is currently attacking itself by its' irresponsible government. The fact that they are willing to endanger Poland's long-term interest in being alligned to Europe is telling.

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

@dolnoslask

Wait and see Britain post brexit then u might see the future of poland, before that you are only making an assumption.

Brexit is at best an indication for what could await Poland. The UK enjoys still several advantages that Poland doesnt have. The UK is a signficantly larger economy with a larger population, it is a net payer (although the British rabate does make the actual amount of money paid to Bruessels smaller). And perhaps most importantly, the ratio of EU citizens working in the UK versus British people working in other EU countries is in the UK's favour. Imagine how weak Poland's hand would be if it had to secure the rights of its' citizen in other EU countries.

And that leaves out security considerations, the UK does not deem Russia to be an existential threat, it has no border with it and the UK owns nuclear weapons.
Tacitus

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

But I beg to differ Poland is no different to the UK apart from 61 bn trade to the us

The UK has twice the population size, its' trade is four times as high as Poland, and unlike Poland its' biggest single trading partner is not an EU country but the USA, yet you think they are comparable? And this is disregarding Poland's status as EU fund recipient, the number of Polish citizen abroad, and its' vulnerable geopolitical position.

@G (undercover)

And what Germany would be without the Marshall plan, half million foreign soldiers defending them from the commies and most of Europe where they can sell their goods non-taxed

Which is why nobody in German (even the AfD) questions Germany's EU membership. And as the polls indicate, most Polish people appreciate it as well.

The whole "either you are in EU or will become the second North Korea" stuff is ridiculous.

Nobody said anything about North Korea, that is just your exaggeration. Without the EU, Poland would be left significantly poorer over time, with possibly a lot of returnees who would not be very pleased of having to return to Poland, and it would be vulnerable to Russian influence. None of this is desireable for Poland.

@Ironside

A position of hostility and imperialism, they could try for a change to negotiate with Poland some kind of agreement.

About what? It is Poland who is breaking agreements that it pledged to adhere to when it joined the EU. Besides, there is no room to compromise over essential values of the EU like the rule of law and judicary independence.

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1539]

Bravo PiS for doing what is right and putting Poland's interests first!

I do not care for the law itself, nor do I care if it offends Israel or others per se. But annoying Israel seems to be a bad idea when the American president (whom Poland desperately wants as an ally) seems to back Israel in everything they do. Creating a possible conflict with the USA can hardly be in Poland's interests. Especially not after they have already been bumping heads with its' European allies.

If you are worried about Russia, you'd better not start offending the countries that could offer you support. That is just common sense.

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1539]

If a promise from America to Poland depends on psychotic, narcissistic Israel's say-so then America is no friend to Poland at all.

The problem is that Poland is fast running out of friends if PiS continues with its' current course. That would be fine if Poland was an island like the UK, but since PiS openly considers its' neighbour Russia as a threat, one has to question the wisdom of alienating its' allies like this.

@Ironside

some 'red-necks' and Trump should show them that America won't do any dirty job for Israel for some shekels

Are we talking about the same government that showed unwavering support for Israel Jerusalem-question? And you think that the same government would not side with Israel over this too?

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1539]

Don't you think the death of 6 million Poles is more important than 'ramifications' from an ally?

I'd argue that it depends on which kind of diplomatic strategy the Polish wants to rely. So far it looked like PiS wanted distance itself from Western Europe and follow more closely the USA. Fair enough. But now risking that close relationship with the USA for domestic reasons seems a bit shortsighted. At least nobody should be surprised if Poland ends up somewhat isolated in the future.
Tacitus

then to hell with such an ally.

Poland needs allies if it wants security against Russia, disregarding them for purely domestic reasons is a folly.

We are already "isolated" and guess what, the real world doesn't give a feck.

We shall see. Perhaps this what PiS is after, the create a siege mentality among its' voters once it becomes clear that Poland is being sidelined on issues that it considers vital for its' security or prosperity.

Not that I blame him for fighting for his chosen home country, but it is regreattable that he took part in the greatest geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century. The Balkans experienced under the Habsburgs a time of never known time of prosperity, and the collapse of AH lead to so many tragedies later on.

We are still trying to undo the damage to this day.

History / Lusatian-Sarmatic obsession of Poles [153]

Those are quite sold facts. No space for any denial of it.

This is of course nonsense. Read any book by a respectable historian which was published in the last 50 years. We know very little about most ancient civilizations, their ethnography et al. Tracing your origin to them is even more ridiculous. There have been a lot of attempts to trace back the Germans to the Germanic tribes, but this is now seen as futile due to the lack of evidence, trying to trace them back to the Sarmatians, who came even before them is even more ridiculous.

The only thing that is safe to say is that the Romans brought civilization to the Balkans when they conquered it, as evidenced by archaelogical findings. Before that, there was nothing worth noting between the Roman and Greek world.

ever, liberals continually cite the US as an example of increased guns = increased gun violence due to the fact that this argument fails when applied to any other country -

And what about the argument "lax gun laws => more mass shootings"? It is not about the number of guns, but how easy it is for others to get them and what kind of guns are sold.

Guess that blows your theory of stricter gun laws out of the water dunnit.

Ridiculous. You can't just take some backwater to further our arguments. Why not use Somalia too? European countries are in many things comparable to the USA, yet they have tighter gun control and experience far fewer mass shootings than the USA. Australia implemented gun control laws after a devastating mass shooting and has ever since not experienced a similar incident.

@ Dirk Diggler. I am not talking about crimes in general. I am talking about mass shootings here, do not try to divert from this issue.

Could it be perhaps the person behind the gun???

If you do not see the structural differences between Czech Republic and Iraq, you are beyond help.

Czech has lax gun laws yet low violent crime

"Lax" gun laws is relative here. You still have to pass a mandatory test before you get a gun.

Mexico, France, Sweden, Honduras, etc

The fact that you actually compare France and Sweden to Honduras and Mexico says it all. Are you really that ignorant, or do you maliciously twist the facts here?

The USA is way closer to Honduras than those countries. Neither Honduras nor Mexico have actually the means to enforce those laws.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

all of which have lax gun laws and high rates of gun ownership.

The problem is not the number of guns. Switzerland and Germany demonstrate that you can tough have tough gun laws, yet a high number of guns per citizens and few mass shootings. You simply should make it more difficult to acquire them, restrict it to the number of people who have a) training and b) need it either for hunting and sport and you end up with fewer mass shootings.

Strict laws but few shootings - Poland, Iceland, etc.

Under etc:=> Every European country with tough gun laws + Australia+Japan

yet tons of shootings rules

Except France has no "tons of shootings." And Mexico's war on drugs dwarves anything that happens in France.

nytimes.com/2016/06/14/upshot/compare-these-gun-death-rates-the-us-is-in-a-different-world.html

where gun laws are alsl lax.

This is not true. Gun laws are tougher in the Czech Republic and Switzerland than in the USA. Just read the Wikipedia page here:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_Czech_Republic#Categories_of_licenses

You have to get a license first in the Czech Republic, which takes some time. The same counts for Switzerland. The danger that an angry pupil gets a gun and can use it in his school is far smaller than in the USA.

re like a warzone - according to their own policr.

Which is not true: government.se/articles/2017/02/facts-about-migration-and-crime-in-sweden/

They are certainly no war zones.

next time migrants

Because there have been so many massacres commited by guns and migrants compared to massacres commited by native people? Was the last school shooter a migrant?

organized crime has no problem obtaining and using automatic sub machine guns.

This is a lie. Gun crime is almost non-existant in Japan: bbc.com/news/magazine-38365729

Even the Yakuza has trouble getting guns: atimes.com/article/japans-gun-control-laws-strict-yakuza-turn-toy-pistols/

Perhaps larger groups will still be able to get their hands on guns, but those groups are more vulnerable to get caught by police. Those "lone wolves" who plan such incidents on their own are the real danger, because they are more difficult to detect. But those people often lack the ressources to pay thousands of dollars for a gun on the black market.

Gun control works. Anything that limits the possibility of dangerous individuals getting guns works.

Americans might have resigned themselves to seeing mass shootings as a natural occurence, but thankfully people in Europe are thinking differently.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

Charlie hebdo, paris massacre,

We are talking about mass shootings here. The fact that you always mention the same cases where migrants were responsible is speaking volumes.

and countless more all committed by muslims.

Which is not true. Breivik was a native citizen. We had 3 mass shooting incidents in Germany in this century, in all cases native Germans were responsible.

Amd a gun doesnt cost thousands of dollars on the black market. A handgun with bodies on it costs $50 or is even given away for free

Perhaps in the USA, but it is far more expensive to get a gun in most countries with strict gun control laws.

Why were terrorists able to kill 100 people with aks if gun control works so well?

Because naturally a larger group will have it easier to acquire weapons than one individual.

The better question is why do we count the length between mass shooting incidents in years in European countriesm while often only weeks pass between such incidents in the USA. Why did the number of such incidents immideately drop (as in completely disappear) after Australia introduced gun control?

France suffered 3 mass shooting incidents this century (those which you like to point out). How many mass shooting incidents have happened in the USA since 2015?
Tacitus
23 Feb 2018
Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

But even if we look at only mass shootings, well then clearly frances gun control failed on numerous occasions.

There have been 3 mass shooting incidents in France in this century according to Wikipedia.

If gun restrictions did nothing but decrease the number of mass shooting incidents, it would still be worth it.

Actually,[...] ike czechy and switzerland have less shootings than countries with very strict laws amd low rates of gun ownership like sweden germany and france.

Everything in this statement is wrong.

Switzerland has more gun crimes than France and Germany and Sweden. Czech Republic has more gun crimes than Germany and Sweden.

Both France and Germany had 3 mass shooting incidents in the last 20 years, yet each country has several more times (at least 6 or more) people than e.g. Switzerland (8,5m) and Czech Republic (10,6m).

Switzerland and the Czech Republic had one notable massacre:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zug_massacre

Uherský Brod shooting

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

Of course statistics are difficult to apply in such small numbers, but claiming that those countries are less likely to have gun violence or mass shootings is wrong.
