USA, Canada / Poles and Americans, what do you think, are we friends or enemies? [187]

The largest Polish diaspora is located in the United States, where in 2012 over 9.6 million people declared their Polish origin.

exactly origin.....what does it mean? Someone with polish surname who can't speak polish language and whose grandfather emigrated to USA after war. These people are not Polish. They have only Polish roots/origin

Poles living abroad occupy a unique place in the foreign policy of the Republic of Poland. They are members of our Polish family, a part of Poland in the farthest corners of the world."[/quote]
Again Poles living abroad - It is first generation of emigrants people who hold polish passports. Plus of course he wants them to vote for his party:-)

Genealogy / Americans of Polish descent. How many of us are on Polish forums? [216]

Exactly- It would be rather stupid judging all nations by opinion of few people writing here.

From my own experience ( I am Polish and I have been living in UK for over 10 years). General perception of USA in England is positive ( except some snooty stiff lips people who look down at anyone except themselves). I would say it is similar in Poland even it is getting a bit bitter aftertaste now in relation to visa requirement. I think they have been abolished in the most of EU countries.

But my experience from meeting some people who emigrated from Poland to USA is....not so great.

USA, Canada / Poles and Americans, what do you think, are we friends or enemies? [187]

I think that some 'Polish American ' are like 'African American'- second/third generation of polish emigrants who have never been to Poland.:-).

I don't think that they understand Poland as for today- they live in the past and their information is based on TV/internet/some tradition brought by parents or grandparents. I can define myself 100% Polish as I was born/educated and worked few years in Poland. I visit few times a year/ have flat in Krakow.....but after have been living for 10 years in UK I lost a bit touch with every day life in Poland . Everything changes very quickly and I probably live in the past too ...what about someone who never has been to Poland or visited it once or twice?

Life / Why do so many Polish strive to be accepted by the West? [78]

. Westerners think that they are the world's pioneers in terms of ethics, life style, finances and in general every aspect of human behaviour.

I would change your question 'Why did so many Polish strive to be accepted by the West'- We did it in the past maybe because it was this 'unknown paradise land' but after Iron Curtain dropped and Polish travel much more this desire is disappearing.

With sure our government tries to....but it is all about money,. business, politics, diplomacy.....

I have just come back from Poland and in one point you are correct - We seem to be copying or buying so many awful sh...ty shows/programs from the west and that is I don't know why.....

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

I have a question for the Poles. . But when I meet Poles in formal and informal situations they seldom smile.

I don't think that you should change - smile as much as you want.

I think this is just culture difference ....We are not overly serious, grim nation but I think that we are just more reserved and maybe honest ?.....We tend to smile when we really mean it.We smile lots to friends, family, neighbours....but we need some time to get to know people better.

News / Should Poland traitors face the death penalty? [105]

PiS has actually increased even more in popularity and PO declined further.

I think the way how they behave in Parliament....all these anti-polish voting.....does not make them popular.

UK, Ireland / Racist ex-priest Międlar tries to fly from Poland to U.K. again. [293]

I'm in a majority Muslim country now - and none of those things happen here.

Jon I don't know in which country you are now but it does- all the time unfortunately....

UK, Ireland / Racist ex-priest Międlar tries to fly from Poland to U.K. again. [293]

hmm did you even listen to him? What hatred?

I did - lots things he says are true but- he does it in a obsessive, intensive way which attracts lots of unsavoury characters. He clearly has obsession about Jewish it is not quite normal...You can do the same about Chrisitian....Muslim.....anyone. Just to listening some of his speech on youtube it makes you angry, aggressive.....That is how his supporters are.

but also about how lucky some of us are

I suppose it is like lottery- where we are born. In developed world country in middle class family.....or in poor peasant with big family in North Korea.

I don't think this ex-priest Miedlar brings any positivity- hatred is quite draining but where is the fine line between Christianity commandment to love one another and self-preservation instinct and need to keep own culture, identity...I would say this fine line is not the same for everyone.

It isn't quite as simple as that - it's a loing, arduous and highly dangerous journey

I know- and sad thing is...these people ale told lots lies how great in Europe is and that there is job ,house ...easily accessible. Sad true- lots of the women are raped on the way....lots used as sexual or hardly paid labour slaves later......however you look at it, it is wrong.

@SigSauer

I never thought that American are sarcastic - your skills grow in Europe:-)

But maybe I am just law abiding person - I moved to UK before Poland joined EU. I applied for visa...had chat with British consul in Warsaw...paid for 1 year visa...... now you can just pay to some criminals jump on the boat in Africa and you are in Europe....what is more you can pick and choose which country suits you. O- I forgot and lose your ID on the way so it is always easier. Sorry but it has nothing to do with racism or liberalism or war refugees it is just breaking all rules and laws.

I don't know much about libertinism ...but is it sometimes on the verge of anarchism?

@kaprys

I think that part of it is press/tv/youtube....you would be surprised how easy is to influenced peoples minds. It is sometimes like 'creating monsters in the cupboards'. I don't understand these anti Jewish posts...They lived in Poland for years and they lead peaceful life. I quite like how Kazimierz district is done now...in Krakow we have Jewish music festival every year. If looking back I think we have quite a few dishes influenced by their cuisine. I don't understand why people don't look at positive side of it.

With muslims emigrants....you are right we don't have many of them in Poland but there are lots of them in Europe...and lots are illegaI.

It is scary to think that there are thousand of people in Europe without any ID. What is the point of having borders/army if anyone can just cross border as he wishes.

As someone said majority of them are peaceful- not everyone blows up people but culture differences are big and even after settling they don't assimilate great.

oh, I see you miss the PRL (so does the current government), right?

I think that current government is too much pro Church and mr Rydzyk :-) to remind PRL but previous one...
I did not watch much TV but as I am aware most news/debates - (Mr Lis was a master) very much reminded PRL z 'przewodnia rola parti ( swap PZPR to PO) ktora zawsze ma racje'

@cms

I am a bit sceptical about this Pew-Research-Centre and in general in these kind of researches as lots people just lie. I think that they highest PC in country the most lies so ....

>>> Przedstawicielka Pew Research Center podała też, że według 26 proc. badanych, żona powinna być posłuszna mężowi, a 46 proc. sądzi, że społecznym obowiązkiem kobiet jest urodzenie dziecka. Zaznaczyła, ze te odsetki są o wiele niższe niż w krajach, w których dominującą religią jest prawosławie.>>>

I ma not convinced about it ....

They're doing their duty toi their voters, who don't share the vision of the shambles in office now.

Just question?
- During 70 in UK- What I heard was proper shambles in UK- everyone on strike I heard that after during long strike of undertaker it was considered to throw bodies to the sea????( not sure if it I true)

- during 80- lots people despised Thather and they thought country was in shambles

Did anyone run to Brussells for help....? No.

What Po/KOD are doing now is undermining Poland showing us as second class country which cannot govern itself so I am not surprised that some Germans want to 'teach' us democracy. They have already done it in 1939.

And is it really so bad in Poland ....safe streets, unemployment dropping....foreign companies investing ...sorry but it was much worse in the past.

News / Should Poland traitors face the death penalty? [105]

@jon357

Of course they do- we had already one infallible party PZPR :-) and I don't think we want it back. We believe in democracy and different opinions but conflicts should be resolved within your own country. We have this old polish saying' Zly to ptak co swe gniazdo plugawi'.

I think you are British ...I have been living in UK for a few years so will give you the example- Brexit... during pre - referendum campaign Boris Johnson lied that NHS would get 350M after Brexit. It was lie. So theoretically Corbyn ( as opposition) should run to Brussel and all Europeans papers to announce it and asking for help.

That is what PO/KOD is doing now.

@jon357

I am sorry- I pressed it accidently too quickly.

What I meant of course we need different political parties to represent different opinions and interests. It is democracy. The problem is that previous government and people who represent it got very arrogant and did not take defeat very well.

So they decided to run to Brussel,,,,German papers and run quite nasty anti-polish campaign hoping for ....not sure revolution and recovering power?

Did similar situation happened

Also, voting a way you dislike isn't treason.

In this circumstances it is very close to treason.

Our history is different from British one ....Poland was twice under partition....and we had quite a few traitors like this in the past.

I wonder if there's any more dirt on Międlar, after all, he's fascist scum, and that goes hand in hand with personal depravity.

You don't like him so you are looking for more but I think right wing extremists are not necessary paedophiles. I think it is rather opposite paedophiles are usually good society men ( on the surface).

His inciting hatred and his rhetoric is strong - clearly he does not spread love and tolerance ....but to be honest I think he has some serious psychological issues.
