Off-Topic / Let's talk about shoes [186]

Is it good to buy very expensive handcrafted, goodyear welted shoes

Simple answer is yes. Long after you forget about the price, the quality will remain. My grandmother who survived the October Revolution and every other event since, going to the 1990s, wore things which were made 60-70 years ago. Her argument was that "you need to know how to wear things".

News / Will America send troops to fight a Russian invasion of Baltics and/or Poland? [281]

Are you a Russian troll?

Why?

I thought that what I said was self evident. Let's take the example of the Ukraine. The more often Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, has to be trotted out to make statements about having "grave concerns" re: Russia's actions, or that there is a "growing and strengthening resolve of the Allies" to defend Ukraine's territorial and geopolitical sovereignty, the more one begins to doubt how much substance there is behind these words. In Ukraine especially, at this point it only causes a rolling of the eyes. You can add every other Western military and political leader to this list, who has made any such statements from a grand stage. The problem is, ordinary people watch actions.

From this perspective, the Old West has once again demonstrated that it will compromise with Russia when it comes to its historic neighborhood at the cost of its local so-called "partners". From the Ukrainian perspective - they put everything on the line in 2014, and were expecting that their awesome sacrifice for democracy would mean that the Association Agreement would be quickly followed by an even tighter embrace with the EU, including potential membership. Now, seven years later people are saying it will be good if Ukraine can join within 20-30 years. During these seven years, Ukraine got perhaps $2-3B in military aid (mostly non-lethal), and another few billion from the IMF which they would probably have gotten any way. At the same time, Germany, the supposed leader of this union they want to join, builds a second natural gas pipeline with Russia which will deprive Ukraine of $3B in direct ANNUAL earnings to the state budget. Macron is seen regularly meeting with Putin and making noises about how sanctions are counterproductive. Britain meanwhile leaves the Union entirely, and is now more focused on little islands in the South China Sea. Nobody will say it out loud, but the Maidan was for nothing, because Europe turned out to have no balls and instead being focused purely on commerce with the much larger Russia. The more often this is discussed, and Western leaders are forced to make their pathetic protestations, the more the Russian aim of dividing and conquering is furthered. This is what I meant by saying it does not matter what will happen in actual fact.

When Latvia or Estonia was admitted, and Poland for that matter, no serious person could claim that in the 21st century Russia would military invade a neighbor and then annex a part of its territory. But it happened, not once but twice now if we include Georgia. So confronted with the idea that there may actually be a scenario where Americans need to be sent to the Baltics to defend them from the Russians, the tune changed pretty drastically. Trump famously did not want to explicitly state his commitment to Article 5 and spent most of his European tour berating allies for being freeloaders. Newt Gingrich, who was a close adviser to him, said - quote - "Estonia is in the suburbs of St. Petersburg" to indicate that Russian designs on the Baltic states are not at all unreasonable. Rich and Johnny are pretty reflective I think of most Americans when it comes to this issue. No one wants to get nuked for Tallinn.

News / Will America send troops to fight a Russian invasion of Baltics and/or Poland? [281]

Ah, another excellent Bobko thread is revived!

My take on this issue is that discussions such as these are self fulfilling promises. It doesn't matter what will happen in actual fact, because to NATO's paranoid eastern members the mere fact that this discussion is happening is deeply unsettling. It feeds their complexes that the West doesn't really view them to be on the same footing as older members, and that they may become a point of trade in some grand deal with Russia. Putin wins points against European solidarity without doing anything at all really, except moving forces around internally.

When you walk in public do people really look at you and sneakingly and look away when you look at them back?

Is this what people do when they see your smelly ass, Pigsy? Also you never told me about how a Jew gets a name like Deepak. So much ink spilled over how you would love to work Customs and Border Protection or be a cop to stop people coming to this promised land, and then it turns out you're a stinkin stowaway yourself. Truly, I worry for you, pig, and your declining mental health.

On an unrelated note - I wanted to ask you if you know why your pedo bff has gone quiet? Is this because your super glue surgery did not go well and he is now permanently retarded? I certainly hope so.

Hahol or Hohol is a now derogatory term for Ukrainians. The word comes from their characteristic hairstyles.

Off-Topic / Who would win in a fight - white tailed eagle or bald eagle? [8]

Well, that depends. Is grappling and elbow strikes allowed?

After having watched some videos just now of eagles fighting in the wild, I am certain that most concerning is the claw!

I'm also happy to report that I found more info re: the bald eagle. It appears he is an opportunist and a thief, despite his noble appearance. Instead of hunting for his own food, he prefers to muscle out other more hardworking birds from their meals. To me, this means -1 point in the fight with the Polish eagle. Also, I found out that both birds are very stupid, especially when compared to crows or macaws. The bald eagle, for example, is not smart enough to walk into shelter when it's raining, and instead just sits there getting soaked. Again, -1 point for the Bald Eagle.

As it says in the title: who would win in a fight of national birds? In one corner we have the Polish national animal - the White Tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus Albicilla), and in the other the symbol of all things American - the Bald Eagle.

Reading about the behavior of the white tailed eagle I learned that they like to stay in one place a lot of the time:

"White-tailed eagles spend much of their day perched on trees or crags, and may often not move for hours. Perhaps up to 90% of a day may be spent perched, especially if weather is poor."

This seems to me a very uncharacteristic thing for somebody from Poland to do. On the other hand, it is the most Polish thing to do - stoically waiting for conditions to improve, .

The Bald Eagle, on the other hand, spends most of his time soaring on powerful air currents, and enjoying the air of freedom. This to me is very American.

Both like fish very much.

BTW, who is Bobko?

Bobko is Bobko. I joined the forum late, maybe 2017-2018ish. Only alternate account I ever had was Bobko_V I think, which I used once or twice when I left my sh*t at the office and couldn't remember my password.

Edit: I suppose I may have posted as a guest many years back, but those would have been in straightforward work-related threads

I'm confused, why is the OP referring to Cargo Pants as Indian? When talking about his underwear, as he often does, Cargo Pants refers to it as "my Jewish skidmarked underwear". In other instances he uses the phrase "my smelly Jewish ass". So is he Jewish or Indian? Is this a case of multiple personality disorder?

P.S. - Glad Cargo Pants was shown to be a liar, once again, and glad that you are in good health!

History / What are Polish opinions regarding Felix Dzerzhinsky? [17]

Are you such a worker who is looking for understanding in the forum?

God, no. I think they are sneaky little creatures that enjoy too much their power of being able to look into the private lives of fellow citizens or just other people. Getting my jollies up by peering over someone's shoulder is not who I am. I am more on the fireman level, I hope!

I had a simple point, that there is some James Bond element to the job. It attracts a certain type of people. Iron Felix was a very interesting person, and not at all like the now century-old caricature of him. A butcher certainly, but a very pious one.

Romanticism in slaying people en masse only because they don`t share your views???

Yes, that's pretty romantic compared to slaying them for owning valuable cash generating assets you covet, or slaying them because they are of a different skin color or faith. By the measure of the entirety of human history, it was pretty romantic to kill over a discussion of ideas of how to better the average man's life rather than whether a man was a Huguenot, a Hussite, or Tutsi. When thinking of the different classes of society and prominent occupations within, I would rate intelligence workers somewhere above cops, and below firemen, maybe? The drive that makes a person want to be a cop is of a different distillation of romance than I would prefer. And I think the person that wants to work in intelligence is overall less likely to take bribes and be generally corrupt. It's this romanticism I refer to. As the father of an organization that had hundreds of thousands of employees over the decades, the culture he instilled was formative. I'm just reflecting on that.

@pawian
Ok. Now without irony - I do see a certain romanticism in the work of an internal security agent, or counter-intelligence agent. Felix once said "«У чекиста должна быть холодная голова, горячее сердце и чистые руки". For our non-cyrillic readers "A Cheka-worker should have a cold head, hot heart, and clean hands".

Think twice before you write similar bs next time

I'm sorry!

May I ask, just as in the earlier post from 2018 - why the outrage if Dzerzhinsky and his machine of terror never had a chance to operate in Poland?

Two new statues of Iron Felix have gone up in Russia over the past month, provoking the ire of the church, monarchists, and just good ol' liberal folk. Wonder if there are still people in Poland that would think to put up a statue of him? As mentioned above, he's probably the second most famous/consequential Pole of the 20th century after Pilsudski.

Life / Energy - Poland [71]

@gumishu

I could give you a lecture in how the Russians are a generation ahead of Poland in terms of their energy market. In a nutshell, Russia split up and privatized it's state-owned generation and transmission monopoly in the early 2000s. Since then, it has attracted - without exaggeration - 100s of billions of dollars of foreign investment, and has seen the construction of tens of new generation facilities. European companies like Fortum, E.On, Enel, and BASF now entirely own plants built by Soviet prison labor and are investing billions into upgrading them. New power plants are being built as well. I remember how in the late 1990s people were talking about an impending energy collapse in Russia because of aging generation capacity that had to be decommissioned. Now Russia exports energy, and all it took was to swallow national pride and be fair to international investors by holding up your end of the deal.

Life / Energy - Poland [71]

Poland doesn't vie for 'capital' investors in energy sector

Meanwhile, by having a liberalized energy market, other countries attract billions of dollars in investment with foreigners building gigawatts worth of new generating capacity with no further incentive from the state than a guaranteed energy tariff over a period of say 10-15 years.
