Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1040]

thanks Looker, that pretty much what I got from it. Not sure if theres some slang in there i.e. 'boazeri'- not sure what the word is referring to in this context.

Also, when the person is saying 'bo ja tylko do 40 letniej boazeri' is that not 'I'm only 40 years old paneling ' or is it what you wrote above?

Life / If I could introduce something from my country into Poland, I would.... [175]

But i actually do like and somewhat love this country!....In my 1st terrifying week i was invited to various grills....a wedding.....and to a football party...which actually was terrifying once Germany scored their 1st goal!

Its a good job you couldnt understand Polish as the abuse they were giving the English referee that night would have made you feel even more uncomfortable.

Cheery old people i.e. ones who dont scowl at you and demand respect just because they've managed to stay alive for 60 years. Most of them have been retired since they were 40 and are being subsidised by the younger generation's taxes yet they still feel the need to treat people with disdain. Its a shame the icy pavements of Poland havent put a few more of them out of action.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

There a are almost parallels with the Muslim communities in Britain in that there is a problem specific to that community which some in that community deny is specific to them, some accept it is specific to them but would rather deal with internally, and those would acknowledge publicly that here is a problem but seem to often get shouted down for negatively publicising their community. The last group are few and far between it seems.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

I look around and see this image as a part of popular culture for black people. It was black people that generated it and black people that maintain it. If you've seen the pictures of the teenage knife and gun victims from the last year or two you'll see the product of this culture.

It isnt a culture that most black adults follow and I think they actually despise it. They must get tired of seeing their children on the news as either victims or perpertrators of murders but at the same time they cant really voice their opinions as self criticism isnt their strong point.

I seem to have met all of them then. The Polish people I've met who claim not to be racist will always say "I'm not racist but..." followed by a comment about black people. To be fair though most ethnic groups seem to have a fairly negative opinion of black people in London.

Life / The Pole is happy when someone else cries... [75]

i would agree with most of the sentiment shown on this topic, there is a bit of 'enjoyment' at others expense and also the Polish as a breed specialise in being selfish.

True but I've also seen them help each other out more than other people. We all have only so much goodwill and Poles probably like to save it all for people they actually know.

stay away from polish women

I think judging by the number of Polish women who shag foreigners you're point is being ignored.

Life / Polish and Czechs [191]

most Slovaks (and I presume Czechs) couldn't care less that there is a country to the north of them.

As an Englishman I can understand this completely. It only holds true though until 150,000 of them come south, get p1ssed and trash a town centre.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [417]

I dont want to join in the Pole bashing so I'll balance a criticism with a compliment.

I think Poles have even less of an ability to accept blame then other nationalities. In my experience even when confronted with damning evidence there is an inability to say ' yep, sorry about that, I fuked up.' A lot of people in different nationalities have this characteristic of course, however I've noticed that the Polish people I know and have met will never hold there hands up to anything. I think its a pride thing.

However I do think a good characteristic of Poles is that they tend not to over-react in pressure situations. They keep their heads and stay calm.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

Smiling is the best medicine and I think all poles who are on polish forum should have a national smile promotion day and go out and make people happy.

Whats Polish for 'Turn that frown upside-down!'

British people force their smiles often, i know quite a few of them and its hillarious when their smile disappears from their faces almost as soon as it appeared, its so fake!

but people in the streets on england i also notice dont smile.

Well, I dont know who to believe.

I have heard that polish women are the most Beautiful in the world( especially compared to British girls). I agree with this but want to know what you think.

Not true. Polish girls tend to stay slimmer but sometimes just being skinny isnt enough.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

And Non, If not for the US the whole British Isles would still be speaking German

We've never spoke German so how could we still be speaking it?

Whats that got to do with anything on this thread anyway? Stereotypical, lazy kneejerk utterance by an American whenever he speaks to anyone in Europe I think.

POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country?

Depends on the what period in history you live. Norman Davies has written a book called 'Microcosm' about Wroclow which shows how this city's history is a microcosm of the history of Central Europe. Thats central europe, not eastern.

but most british people are probably more racist than your average Pole

You are probably right.

How did you come to that conclusion?

There is an argument for finding new words due to the associations with slavery and an be viewed as derogatory.

Was African slavery so widespread in Polish history? And if so, how many Polish speaking black people are these Polish phrases associated with slavery going to offend?

Er, this does happen I'm afraid. I know of it happening in west London and it has happened to my brother in the midlands. It'll happen anywhere where you get a majority of one ethnic group whose teenagers feel territorial.
