Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

Will it be too much for the community to know about you?

Depends. If you would go to a little town or to a village expect that some people will talk behind your back, which isn't dangerous, but definitely can be irritating. In a bigger city nobody would basically care. Well maybe except the parents and relatives. If they knew about their boy's preference earlier, everything should be OK. If they didn't I'm sure they would be in shock.

There are at least 3 gay lecturers at my University, and nobody cares. Though you would have to watch out for the steroids and hooligans. They like to fight and everything can be a pretext for them. Peoples look, walk, behavior, etc, but than again you get those people everywhere...

Genealogy / Why are some Polish people dark complected, and others very light [511]

ArturSzastak, I have proved already that you're a racist: you give the thumbs-up to another racist's Polonophobic tirades.

Can you show us in what way jose's polonophobia shows itself? Strangely enough I must have missed it somehow? :(

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

I heard that because of the strong religious background, there is a strong taboo about homosexuality in Polish culture. Is this true?

Majority of Poles view sexuality as a very personal and intimate sphere and they think that it should remain that way. Whatever you do in the privacy of your bedroom should remain in its doors. All those homosexual demos are viewed more as a manifestation of ones sexual preferences rather than as a fight for homosexual's civil rights. Basically the attitude of polish society could be summed up by " Do what ever you like to do, but don't force others to watch it." Majority of people are willing to agree about a legalization of homosexual relationships. The situation differs when it come for child adoption.

Yep, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was very multi-culti. Add to that all those wars that took place on this land and all those amounts of rapes that followed it and you will know why half of my family could play Gypsies/Turks/Romanians/etc and the other half look like bloody Aryans. :)

History / Poles and Russians -- love-hate relationship? [209]

i think its a very unwise tendency this whole poland russia thing. yes russia occupied east europe for a long time ,but then again meanwhile a whole generation grew up and comeon today its 54 years ago stalin died.

From the looks of things, you seem not to know exactly what you are talking about.

As for poles hating Russians? Not really. Russian government/state, yes. People? No.

Food / Borscht - Zurek / Bialy barszcz recipe [153]

I know people that do their own "zakwas", and it’s always the best that way, but most seem to take the easier path(me included). :)

Genealogy / Is tallness common among Polish people? [201]

As for men in tights, no thanks they're in the bracket as men with high heels...

You would change your mind after seeing me dance wearing them. :)

As for me, I'm a midget compared to all of you. I'm 5 ft. 2 inches. I don't know how to convert to cm but I used an online converter and it says it's 157.48 cm. It's 62 inches total.

All my girlfriends were about this size. I like petit women. :)

Work / Want to live and work in Poland, but it is not possible? [19]

Besides tax office can claim taxes only 2 or 3 years back.

That's a relief. Few of my friends received letters from the Urząd Skarbowy here in Poland with the warrant to pay the back tax. One lived in GB for 10 years and always have paid the tax in the UK so probably that’s how they tracked him.

Work / Want to live and work in Poland, but it is not possible? [19]

Are you saying that you don't have to register (as a Pole) to work in Poland? He has been living here for seven years (In London). He supports his wife financially, - because she can't go back to Poland and get work because of him. I can't see how he can't work there but can work here, surely that must be illegal?

Hmm I'm not sure why he says he can't work here, but I do understand why he doesn't wan to go back. If he does he will have to pay the back tax. Only people that started to work after the 1st January 2007 don't have to pay the double tax in Poland. 7 years? That would cost a fortune. :)

Genealogy / Is tallness common among Polish people? [201]

Just over 6ft, a good height for a man Like you say it all depends Im 172 but I have friends that are much shorter and much taller

What? He's 183 cm and he has a good height for a man, and I with my 181 cm am a short repellent and weak midget! How cruel! :( :)

Would you at least consider to wear one inch smaller heels for me? I'm maybe short by at least broad and I use my small legs like a bloody Baryshnikov! Even wear the same tights! :)

Quoting: professays
Is the word Lah abusive?

put it into context, Profe

Lach is just another name for a Polish person, used by Ukrainians, Russians and Turks. It's not offensive, although taking under the consideration the history between Poles and those nations I guess that some people might use it in a rather abusive context. :)

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

ive been asked for a fight twice in the last couple of weeks when this has happened...

You see, you have been ASKED! Now that's what I call polite, and proves that even in those kind of situations Poles know how to behave. :)

Yes- although I'm not sure this is the correct way to express it in English.

Yeah, I think it's not possible to find an English equivalent.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Personally, I've found Poles to be polite in general. But they also usually laugh when I say that. So, I'm not sure what to think. Older people seem to be extremely polite!

Because Poles are masters at self-criticism. :)

Again, the way to address stranger's is in Polish in the third person- to Anglo-Saxon's this seems excessively polite but if this is the way one has been taught it is normal- it would be rude if one says "you" if one does not have their permission, especially to the older generation.

Third person? Do you mean addressing people per Pan/Pani(Mister/Madam)?

USA, Canada / Polish TV in the USA? [43]

Stop watching Polish soap operas. People that play in them aren’t even worth to be called actors. The same as in the UK. :)

Genealogy / Do Polish people have big noses? [451]

I know Amathyst. And thanks BTW. :) The person that started this thread really must lead a very boring life since he troubles himself with such silly problem. :)

I've been to Poland twice now and I can honestly say I haven't noticed anything strange about Polish apart from there was a lot more totty knocking about!

What’s that?
