History / Why is Poland weaker than Russia? [390]

Finally, do you think if a Polish-Lithuanian-Muscovite Union was formed that it could actually survive?

This is what ultimately happened 2 centuries later, at the end of 18-th century. But this time it was Russian Empire which swallowed part of Poland and Lithuania rather than the opposite. Which language would they speak if Poland would join Russia in 17-th century? Probably situation would be similar to Ukraine and Belarus of 17-th century where many nobles (including those of Ruthenian origin) spoke fluent Polish and common people borrowed many words from Polish. So, basically there would be no principal problems with mutual understanding. Take in account that in 17-th century Polish and Russian languages were way more similar (and simpler) than now. Some part of their modern differences if the result of recent few centuries developments. Russian city of Smolensk (and vicinities) was under Polish rule for many decades. How long could it survive? I think it would largely dependent on how Polish nobles and kings would treat Ruthenian (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarussian) population. If they would proclaim a policy of Slavic brotherhood and religious tolerance, it could survive for a quite a long, I think, possibly for a centuries. Well, in my perception many Russians would welcome idea of Slavic brotherhood and union and mutual protection if Poles would conduct diplomacy clever enough.

Unfortunately for Poles they've got quite a tong-breaking language. I would got a hard time to speak it comfortably. I don't know if it played any role centuries ago.

History / Would Poland be better off if it had lost in the Polish-Soviet War? [44]

"Would Poland be better off if it never gained independence in 1921?"

Haven't Poland gained independence in 1918? In my opinion Soviet Russia (there was no USSR in 1920) could not assimilate such a huge chunk of territory, back then. The Soviet rule still was very shaky and by swallowing entire Poland which also included Western Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania (populated by population who's attitude towards Bolsheviks was skeptic at best) it was at very serious risk of getting a big lurch to the Western side and collapse. Citizenship war in Russia ended largely in 1922 only, and in 1920 Soviet rule was on verge of collapse. This is the map of the fronts in 1920:

grandars.ru/shkola/istoriya-rossii/grazhdanskaya-voyna.html

Territory controlled by Bolsheviks is shown in red. So, as you see at some points of 1919-1920 they controlled just a territories around Moscow and St-Petersburg and were on the verge of collapse.

History / Would Poland be better off if it had lost in the Polish-Soviet War? [44]

Germany may not have attacked in 1939, or at all, as the USSR would have be much closer to the German heartland, and stronger demographically and industrially.

Possibly attacking USSR was Hitler's largest mistake. I wonder what would happen to US if Hitler would attack it together with Japan from both sides.

History / Would Poland be better off if it had lost in the Polish-Soviet War? [44]

Poles dreamt about independence from Russian Empire and neither they would want to be a part of USSR. Also not too many Poles spoke good Russian I guess, many were devoted Catholic. For an atheist USSR it would create a big problems.

History / Would Poland be better off if it had lost in the Polish-Soviet War? [44]

Polish-Soviet War took place 100 years ago. Why to think about such a distant past.

Poland would probably still control the Western Ukraine, in addition to any territories it would have gained in the West.

Unlikely. Prior to Polish-Soviet war Western Ukraine proclaimed independence in 1918 and even city of Belostok was proclaimed part of USSR. So, USSR wouldn't see these territories as Polish and would withdraw them. Entire Poland wouldn't likely to be proclaimed as a part of USSR as the later would face a serious assimilation problem.

How about Poland declare neutrality on global military alliances. What you people think?

I think it would be a reasonable decision at present historic situation. Long live Europe without military bases directed at each other!

News / Could Poland be self-sustainable in energy? [56]

There are claims that a new generation of nuclear reactors may produce quite a little nuclear waste and even burn a lot of waste that already exist. If this is true, why to get crazy about fusion too much in this century?

News / Could Poland be self-sustainable in energy? [56]

I don't bet about distant future, but in this century, I guess, fusion will not become a mainstream player. Therefore in our century nuclear fission will start to play larger role. Especially, in those countries who lack hydro or geothermal power.

The same type of bright promises about fusion power could be heard for 70 years already. And always the delay is "only 15-20" years ahead. Cannot be trusted before would be demonstrated. And don't expect fusion power would be very cheap and problems-free.

News / Could Poland be self-sustainable in energy? [56]

My question is: could Poland lessen her dependence on energy raw materials (oil, coal. natural gas) by concentrating on sustainable soruces?

My guess only nuclear power would be able to do that on the global scale. Well, I suspect that all hydro power in Poland is already thoroughly exploited.

Off-Topic / Ukraine, Belarus, Russia in EU in 2030? [88]

They can give long-term low-percent credits to those talented and honest Ukrainian entrepreneurs who create working places and develop agriculture and manufacturing in Ukraine. It may include small and medium business. Credits aren't completely free lunch, so it may return profits. But this is not only money. They may open large-scale training for Ukrainian administrators, entrepreneurs, lawyers, etc., to improve their skills and bring their mentality to the best EU standards. A joint administrations may be established throughout Ukraine in which Germans may take part as an observers and trainers or play more active role. Even some retired skilled administrators from EU may take part in it.

If Merkel said that, it would be easy for you to find a link to that.

This is very new info and it looks like that if it is true she said it during private conversation with a group of Ukrainian politicians in Kiev, so it wasn't a public statement for mass media. Just her private behind the closed doors opinion.

UK, Ireland / Mixed feelings after moving from Poland to England [36]

What I like the least about foreign languages is a different way of pronunciation. Even after decades of exposure to English I still feel very uncomfortable when listening to regular and fast American English which is spoken on TV or in movies and understand quite a little sometimes. Fortunately private conversation is much easier and I feel no principal problems here. Either I still speak with remarkable accent most of time, though can do it a bit better if I want. I find that Canadian variety of English is more pleasant for me than US variety (which is especially difficult to comprehend). Also I find French and Polish pronunciation difficult.

UK, Ireland / Mixed feelings after moving from Poland to England [36]

I take it your first language isn't slavic (since most Slavic speakers learn without much effort)

Unfortunately it may not be always true for all the Slavic speakers, especially those who didn't have any exposure to Polish previously. After some practice I'm capable to understand about 80% of simple Polish texts, but things are getting much worse when a person like me goes to more advanced texts, audial comprehension and speaking. Pronunciation is very hard and unique, and I didn't remark my audial comprehension of Polish would progress a lot even after listening to a lot of Polish movies and audios. I think for many adult people it may take many years to grasp Polish well. There are many similarities with other Slavic languages, but many differences as well.

Language / Polish language would look better written in Cyrillic Script? [212]

One reason why Russians in particular have such problems with the stressed vowels of English, Spanish, and Italian

I'm not sure about English. Take a note how "o" is pronounced in some English words when it is not under stress. For example, "o" in "voluptuous". It seems not like Polish "o". So, English does have this reduction of stressed vowels as well, it seems.

Language / Polish language would look better written in Cyrillic Script? [212]

Start pronouncing vowels in Russian correctly and maybe we'll talk, it's voda not vada Moskva not Maskva!

I guess a hundreds of years ago they were pronounced more like in Polish what is still evident in Russian spelling and some Russian dialects. But I afraid Russian pronunciation evolved in right direction because in my feeling it is difficult to pronounce straining "o-o-h" in a words if this sound is not under stress. Therefore it evolved in what is called an "undefined stressed vowel".

Language / Polish language would look better written in Cyrillic Script? [212]

Even if Polish needs some reform (though I don't insist on it) then it would be pronunciation rather than the script. I find it (and not only me) rather difficult and unpleasant. To the extent that I would prefer to use English to communicate to Poles rather than Polish (even if I would knew it well). What makes me wonder about Slavic languages in general is how languages which are so similar lexically are so much different in pronunciation.

History / Occupation of Eastern Poland in 1939 [97]

They see Poles as rebels and trouble makers.

Modern Russia sees Poles as a ...rebels?! A country which is member of EU and NATO?

But that is what we are and we will never be friends with Russians.

Why exactly? Is there any objective reasons to be an enemies? I thought we are all the humans and share the same basic values? Well, majority of people in any country...

History / Occupation of Eastern Poland in 1939 [97]

Interesting question, actually. I suspect if it was a normal reasonable country, then Poland would have allied with it in the face of German aggression.

It would be not a bad idea for USSR to ally with Poland, but only from a retrospective point of view. Because how could they know back then that Germany going to attack them after they will swallow Poland? Enter in terrible war with Germany and loose dozens of millions of its own citizens just to protect Poland? Also we can't know how the Western Powers would react if USSR would be the first to attack Germany even under excuse of Poland protection. And if USSR would be able to count for their supplies in this case.
