History / Unusual soldier (The bear - named Voytek) [71]

Thanks for those addresses sjam. There was a hope that she would be able to write something significant to speak about at his funeral but time has almost ran out for that. I think now we're both going to do some research anyway.

Law / How do I verify a Polish company's existence? [240]

Without a doubt that is a scam and don't get caught by it. Why would a professional company that could offer so much then have a googlemail email address? They didn't leave a phone number either despite say you could call them.

Another reason I know this is a scam is because I receive such emails often in my hotmail account and I have never posted a resume on-line.

Law / How do I verify a Polish company's existence? [240]

Ah just when I thought I was going to be making alot of money!! HA

I read in a local newspaper here that an elderly lady was scammed out of £105,000 (her entire life savings) by one of these letters. Shocking.

I'd probably not reply to them even if it's jokingly. Your email is just on a list of email addresses they spam out too. If you reply you just open yourself up to problems I feel.

Love / Scottish & Polish relationships [229]

There seem to be a number of Scottish folks here on this board. Why is that?
What is the draw to things Polish for Scottish nationals?

Scotland and Poland have a long history together. The connections between the two are especially evident around WWII but do go back much further than that.

Personally I've always had Polish friends, I think it's just a natural connection.

Love / Scottish & Polish relationships [229]

For instance, despite that history, this is not why Seanus selected his Polish girl. His seems more the natural result of geographic location,

Well, at a guess he didn't "select" a Polish girl at all. His travels took him to Poland where he met a girl whom he connected with and so they are together. Location may be correct but also could have been in any other country and met a Polish girl or indeed a girl from another country either there or in Poland. It's because they connected as people not because of their nationality.

. But I am more interested in hearing of romantic interaction of today and the reasons for it.

Well, there is one simple reason for it. Previous to 2004 there were a small amount of Polish people here and now there are thousands. So it's natural that there is more romantic interaction. Again though, people fall in love because they are attracted to a person for a personality reason, not because of where they come from. (If it is an attraction, it will not keep them together if they are not right for each other).

Please tell me more about your multiple daily varied contacts with a Polish man (men?). I assure you, it is only for scientific reasons that I ask. ;)

In general terms, I work with Polish men, I socialise with Polish men.

I wish someone would explain to me this apparent fascination girls have to men in skirts.

Kilt is quite different from skirt but never mind that. Only men of a certain build can carry off looking good in a kilt, too skinny or too fat and the look is lost. The kilt is a Scottish national dress and when it's worn properly it's fantastic. I get a bit hacked off with this skirt thing, many forget that tradition says the kilt should be worn with nothing underneath, so really it's only hardy men who can wear something that doesn't cover their legs, doesn't protect them from the weather really and don't wear anything under. No comforting trousers for the Scottish man!

Language / I need advice - how long does it take to learn Polish? [70]

Everyone takes different lengths of time to learn so don't worry if you appear slower than someone else who is learning because you'll also be picking it up faster than another person.

It all depends on the amount of time you can give to learning each day, each week and how easy or difficult you are finding it. Some aspects of the language you may pick up straight away and others you may have great difficulty with. Don't worry about it. It will come.

It's good that you understand people when they speak slowly, it means you're not far away from understanding them when they speak quickly. :) Keep at it. :)

Work / Salary expectations in Poland [373]

What has gone wrong?

Wrong wording in the job advertisements?

They give free drinks to their friends,

I get free drinks in my local from the manager, who is only installed by the brewery. She's not Polish.

Incidentally, if anyone is giving away free drinks it should be docked from their pay. Or your friend didn't realise that?

when offered a drink they choose the most expensive or a double of their favourite.

See, that's just smart.

UK, Ireland / Polish Beer In The UK [98]

I bought a bottle of wine in Peckhams recently it was £outrageous.

You can get bottles of Lech, Tyskie and Okocim in Pekhams in Glasgow

You can get them in Tesco here. Although the Okocim always seems to be sold out.

That must have set you back a fair price.

I'm trying to think of the other Polish beer in Tesco. Not Zyweic. Actually it might not have been Tesco, it might have been the Polish shop near my house. Anyway, I can't remember the name of the beer but I know that Tesco is stocking more and I know that my local Polish shop has a bigger range.

If anyone cares. ;)
