History / Ukrainian-occupied Eastern Poland [135]

Currently both Ukraine and Poland have territories of sufficient size and no obvious reason for territorial disputes and ultimately have possibility to develop good relations. All those talks about territorial claims is intentional provocation to spark an ethnical conflict.Do you seriously believe that Poland doesn`t have sufficient enough territory now? When whould be the end for those stupid claims: ``We need Ukraine without Ukrainians or with Ukrainians as our slaves``? As population of any Slavic nation is shrinking now, maybe there is time to unite on some new basis?Otherwise both Poland and Ukraine will ultimately loose its Slavic faces and consumed by wisier nations.

There's no need for namecalling. We can all agree that Lvov has a very significant Polish history and has significant cultural importance for Poles in general.

Pardon for my ignorance, but which exacly cultural acheivements happened in Polish Lwow?Which thinkers or scientists originated there? Is it famous for scientific discoveries?

Hypothetically speaking if I would have been in position to claim anything, I would.

You would claim entire Ukraine if you could?! And were would you want to put Ukrainians?
Exterminate or drive them in Siberia?..

As if Rusini have been ever majority there before 1944!

Well,in any case, are you seriously want to claim some city
which whould be surrounded by Ukrainian territory?Or would claim
corridor of land to it?And which parts of Ukraine are you going to
claim beside Lviv?

What a BS! Anyway who cares IT WAS MIDDLE AGED HISTORY!

Since 1772 Lwow was Polish for 19 years only: 1920-1939.
So what was after Middle Ages?

In 1900, when it was still part of the Austrian empire, it's population was 20% Ukrainian, 49% Polish and 27% Jewish.

Not even absolute majority.

Genealogy / Typical Polish Eye Color [77]

Another unusual thing in East Europe is red hair. It unusually suggests Northern European origins.

Could you not to write some eyewash here?Majority of people in Eastern Ukraine are officially Ukrainians not Russians,it is only their language that is ugly mixing of Ukrainian and Russian or in some regions more pure Russian lang. The only region of Ukraine is Crymea where ethnical Russians constitute absolute or at least relative majority of population.(Soon it will be Tatars). In other regions far from it.

The green eye colour is not predominant among Slavs.Far from it.Blue and even brown are more common.Grey is common too.Natural redheads are not uncommon among ethnical Ukrainians and Russians.I do not think it is necessarly linked to Western Europeans.

History / Ukrainian-occupied Eastern Poland [135]

1) Lwow had not been founded by Poles.
2) From the end of 18-th century after partition of Poland and till 1918 Lwow beared
the name of Lemberg and was part Austro-Hungarian Empire.Austrian emperor
France Joseph wore Ukrainian national shirt under his cloth according to some sorces
and mastered Ukrainian to the point he was able to write poetry in Ukrainian.Once he
wanted to become a Bukovina king to joy of Ukrainians.Ukrainian soldier liked Austrian
king and called him ``our king``.Return Lwow to Poland and not to Austria?

I`m not going to argue if Lwow was predominantly Polish-speaking or not, though I`m
not sure that ethnical Poles constituted magority of popualation there in the last centuries.
Well, maybe Israel will claim Lwow too?..

Galicia–Volhynia Wars

During the wars over the succession of Galicia-Volhynia Principality in 1339 King Casimir III of Poland undertook an expedition and conquered Lviv in 1340, burning down the old princely castle.[10] Poland ultimately gained control over Lviv and the adjacent region in 1349. From then on the population was subjected to attempts to both Polonize and Catholicize the population.[17]

When in 1387 Władysław retreated from the post of its governor, Galicia-Volhynia became occupied by the Hungarians, but soon Jadwiga, the youngest daughter of Louis, but also ruler of Poland and wife of King of Poland Władysław II Jagiełło, unified it directly with the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland.[10]

But Lwow was was build by Poland,

Lviv was founded on the existent settlement most probably in 1240-1247 by Daniel, ruler of the medieval Ruthenian kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, and named after his son, Lev.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lviv

Actually it were Poles who always draw line between themself and ``inferior Ukrainians``. It`s enough to say that until 1939 majority of Ukrainians in Polish governed part of Ukraine didn`t have

any

citizenship! Could you imaging to live on territory where your ancestors lived for a thousand of years maybe, and be treated like underhuman without citizenship? Polish citizenship was granted by special permission of Polish government to minority of Ukrainians only. A way to the higher ranks of Polish society was almost closed to Ukrainians.Well,if some nation permits to itself luxury of meaningless racism and gaining on somebody instead uniting with them against common adversaries, consequences were predictable...

History / What do nations of the world owe to Poland and Polish people? [58]

while the popular beverage was called gorzałka (from the Old Polish gorzeć meaning "to burn"), which is also the source of Ukrainian horilka (горілка).

Rather from Old Slavic. In Russian there is also verb goret` (to burn) - гореть.

Imagine what would have happened if Poland had adopted Orthodox christianity? It is natural we would have formed a lasting alliance with our Eastern neighbours.

They would not even need to adopt Orthodoxy. If Polish nobles would treat Ukrainians/Ruthenians as a humans,Poland most likely would be never partitioned and probably never seriously invaded from the East (at least up to now).

And would be a regional superpower which could rival to both Russia and Germany.

Principally I think that Ukrainians and Belorussians are probably genetically even closer to
Poles than Russians.Quite possibly researchers mistook Russians for Ukrainians and
Belorussians.Majority of Russians are maybe not that close, especially those who live in
Tatarstan and Karelia.

If you run a google search for "genetic map of europe", you'll see some fascinating graphs.

Also, you can look up the following papers:

Nature 456, 98-101 (6 November 2008) | doi:10.1038/nature07331; Received 30 May 2008; Accepted 12 August 2008; Published online 31 August 2008
"Genes mirror geography within Europe"

and
European Journal of Human Genetics (2008) 16, 1413-1429; doi:10.1038/ejhg.2008.210
"Investigation of the fine structure of European populations with applications to disease association studies".

Short answer - yes, it looks like the Poles and the Russians are very close genetically.

Actually, there is nothing strange in the fact that Polish and Russian languages are so similar.
If you look at this genetic map of Europe it seems that Ameriracan researches believe that
genetics of people in Eastern and Northern Poland is identical to Russians. It is marked RU.

Vlad123, do you reside inside or outside of MKAD?

What is MKAD? I thought I live in Northern America...

Your anti-ukrainian attitude is abhorrent. You are a just a Moskal, and please admit it.

What? I`m ethnical Ukrainian and like Ukrainian language.Did I say I do not like it?
But some people should know languages, and if Polish and Russian have many very similar
words that`s a fact and to deny this is laughable...
Ukrainian has its own specifics,it developed not less independently than Russian or Polish
and this is beauty language...

It is interesting that also Polish and Ukrainian share set of words which are very similar to each other (I do not want to bet if they are borrowed) there is also lot of words which are more similar between Polish and Russian than between Polish and Ukrainian.

There is lot of striking similarities between Russian and Polish. For example:

English - Polish - Russian - Ukrainian

He - On - On - Vin
She - Ona - Ona - Vona
They - Oni - Oni - Vony
It - Ono - Ono - Vono
Where - Gdje - Gdje - De
River - Rzheka - Reka - Richka
Wife - Zhona - Zhena - Druzhyna,Zhinka

And many, many other. The reason why Ukrainians understand you better than Russians is because Ukrainians speak or understand Russian too.Plus borrowed words from Polish.Luckily for Ukrainians their language is language in between Polish and Russian.

Therefore they have less difficulty to practice both those languages. It is interesting that Ukrainian also have some word identical to Czech. For example: zvir (beast) richka (river) djakuju (thank you) and many other...

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

The Poles once beat the Turks out of Europe. What's left of this brave spirit today?

Poles of course fought bravely, but mostly it were Ukrainian cossacks who did most of work.

News / How much Poland's economy grew up since 1989? [32]

Poland produces something like 90% of domestic appliances, 75% percent of flat screens (regardless of brand) for the European market.

Those flat screens and appliances receive label ``made in Poland`` on them?Or what kind of label?

News / How much Poland's economy grew up since 1989? [32]

I wonder how polish economy could grow so fast (even in crisis time) while they have so many unemployed?
I thought that at unemployment rate 12-20% economy could only stagnate. There seems to be no sense to increase
salaries, unemployment will only depress salaries growth. No growth of salaries = no consumption growth = no economy
growth.Or it is growing just for account of the richest consumption? It seems strange to me...
Well, during 2003-2004 unemployment was constantly at 19-20%.In 2012 it didn`t went lower then 12.3%.And other years
also very high. How economy could grow under such conditions is mystery to me.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

The level of GDP per capita is nearest countries like: Greece, Italy, Slovenia. Other option doesn't exist.

More accurate indicator of living standards within country is purchasing power parity per capita (if calculated properly). It takes in account not only nominal GDP which is usually estimated in USD, but also cost of living.

Mesured by PPP Slavic and Eastern European countries follow like this:

Slovenia - 27,412
Greece - 26,948
Czech Republic 26,046
Portugal 25,385
Slovak Republic 24,022
Hungary 21,610
Poland 21,310
Russian Federation 21,248
Lithuania 20,374
Croatia 20,031
Latvia 17,692
Romania 15,163
Belarus 15,040
Bulgaria 14,603

UK, Ireland / How long will Poles use communism and ww2 as an excuse to move to the UK? [55]

Look at Russia! Incredibly rich in natural resources, yet soo soo poor.

Actually, average PPP in Russia looks quite prestine.According to World Bank estimates for
year 2011 it is basically the same as in Poland.
data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.PP.CD?order=wbapi_data_value_2011+wbapi_data_value+wbapi_data_value-last&sort=asc
The problem of Russia is huge inequality in incomes between rich and poor and capital flight. So basically we could tell Russia is less
socialist country then Western countries and even Poland.Wild capitalism destroys Russia. Also there is huge inequality in incomes between people of different nationalities.

The pick of the bunch, in my opinion is the Czech Republic. I also noticed the people there are quite friendly and westernized for Slavic standards!

When I was back in Praga airport somebody stole my Ukrainian passport. After lot of nervous I found my passport in local administration. They throw my passport to me like a piece of dung! Some private Czech organization issued a rolic about treatment of Ukrainian housewifves workers by Czechs.

But personally my relation to Czechs is quite good.I believe that Czechia is interesting country.

And why does Ukraine have to join the EU for that to be OK??

Because to have right to work and live permanently in UK, you better need to have EU
citizenship. But this is just assumption.I`m not proposing to crowd UK with Ukrainians.
If you know some Poles, including your husband and some Ukrainians, what do you
think are differences and similarities between them, both in appearence and mentality?
Or maybe you heard something from other people?I`m curious to know about it from
native English. Please be objective,I`m not going to abuse...
