Could you, really?

Bear in mind that it would require you to prove that it was maliciously anti-Polish rather than being merely a critical observation about Poland.

oh great another really helpful and totally unpatronising post from delphiandomine, almost as helpful as your offering on the UPA thread

i would say mr seldon attributing more holocaust guilt to the Poles than the Germans counts as malicious or retarded, google it yourself if you're actually interested rather than just looking for a confrontation.

you know theres some really great people on this forum that are really helpful (thanks Harry for replying to my query in your last post btw)

which is why i keep coming back, thats after i've been away long enough to forget the anti-semitism and general arse-iness that puts me off the place

thanks for saving me time and putting me off PF quickly this time!

Thanks Harry, i've not seen that show in the listings, i'm curious now
i could give you a list of instances of Anti-Polish bias on the bbc the worst being the infamous nightwaves interview with Anthony Seldon

History / Are Poles happy with the current Polish borders? [134]

Russians or not, a lot of the inhabitants of Kaliningrad want independence or real autonomy
kaliningrad-eu.blogspot.co.uk
witness the popularity of the "Konigsberg" numberplate

as well as the war damage, The Lithuanian SSR rejected the offer of the enclave because it would have made Lithuanians a minority in the Lithuanian SSR.

look at the Tensions in Latvia over Russian minority rights and imagine it tripled!

History / DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES OF POLES IN LITHUANIA IN 1947-1959 [6]

Why the heck doesn't Poland repatriate these people back to Poland? Poland can use a bit of immigration. No?

oddly enough my father said the same thing when i told him about Lithuanias shameful denial of Polish language rights (on official documents).
looks like a good idea when looked at coldly and logically but it doesn't take account of the Emotional attachment to the borderlands, and the unique Culture & origins of the Lithuanian Poles

the ancestors of Wilnos Poles have lived there as long as Lithuanians

History / DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES OF POLES IN LITHUANIA IN 1947-1959 [6]

Due to the intensive migration from the Soviet republics of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, thousands of Poles arrived in the LSSR who strengthened the ranks of the Polish community.

i had no idea of this, what a complicated picture, i was wondering how Wilnos Poles escaped Lwow style ethnic cleansing, was it because it wasn't adjacent to the Polish Border and thus not considered a risk?

Zhitomir also escaped the fate of Lwow somewhat

then theres the deportations of Soviet Poles to the Kaliningrad oblast which is hard to understand

Language / Two funny videos. Native speakers in Poland caries a risk of learning strange accent. [4]

i'll only be impressed when that guy does East Midlands and Stoke on Trent accents ;-)
for east midlands look for videos of Brian Clough, and for Stoke, maybe try googling "Blaster bates", theres not many famous people with Stoke Accents, Robbie Williams doesn't really sound typical for stoke because he spent so much time in Manchester

My parents are from stoke but even i can't imitate the stoke accent properly

the Welsh clip sounds like South Wales to me FWIW, its a much thicker accent in the north

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

Portugese is damn difficult, supposedly as hard as Chinese.
I had my first conversation in Polish on thursday, then i floated back home on a cloud!
now i've found someone who's happy to talk to me in Polish the future looks bright for improving my skills

Polish just looks intimidating because of all those consonant clusters. the fact that in the past i'd attempted to learn Czech and Russian (but had no chance to use them in England so didn't keep learning) did give me a small head start

Language / Slovio - the international simplified Slavic language [37]

thats a great idea at least unlike esperanto its based on a real language group and the person you speak to doesn't have to learn it,

if you see what i mean.
something like this is used in England between Poles & Slovaks.

If i used Interslavic to a Pole i assume i'd sound like a caveman with a brain injury but i'd be understood?
example text:
"Slovjanski je slovjanski medžujezyk iztvořeny v gode 2006 kak sutrudnièno usilje grupy ľudi iz razliènyh krajev, sobranyh na Slovjanskom Fore. On može byti velika pomoè dľa putujuèih i mnogo upotrebimo orudje dľa kogo-buï, kotory by hotel adresovati cely slovjanski svet posredstvom vebsajtov, forov, spisov e-mejľskih i.t.d., bez potrebovanja prevoditi tekst v razne jezyki. Znanje togo jezyka pozvaľa èloveku byti razumemy dľa vsakogo govoriteľa slovjanskogo jezyka i razumeti veèej, než jedyno osnovu teksta v kotorom-buï slovjanskom jezyke. Slovjanski takože je mnogo dobra metoda dľa tyh, kotore hoèut naèeti uèiti se svojego prvogo slovjanskogo jezyka."

all the links are dead :-(
shame, i wanted to see how they handled a word like "Bedzie" which is Hangover in Czech but not in Polish

obviously it'll never be satisfying as submerging yourself in one Language and Culture, but it could be useful in an emergency

all those X's in Slovio look wierd

News / Poland A and Ukraine B. Compare how far Poland has advanced. [282]

maybe they don't think of themselves as Russian but they vote for Moscows Puppet and set back Ukraines development.
i'm partly going by what my mate in Kremenchuk (Central UKR) tells me.

The anti Polish thing is worrying but hopefully just a phase, i think a lot of the elite realise that Poland is their best ally for a European future

if you google Uzghorod, the 1st hit you get is a you tube video put up by a moronic woman who makes anti Polish comments

btw
I seem to have mortally offended a Ukranian member of my radio hobby group by accidentally mentioning Grodno, Brzesc, Lvov etc :D haha i swear it wasn't deliberate!

they need to melt down the Bandera statues and put up Petlura instead!

History / Question about interwar Poland [13]

they did have a lot of promising Industrial improvement plans that seemed like they'd have worked if the war hadn't happened.
Polskie Radio who were at that time operating the highest powered transmitter in Europe were poised to open Polskie Radio Wolyn from Luck on 424khz, sounds like a trivial thing

but it was part of the plan to develop Wolyn/Volhynia after centuries of neglect by the Russian Empire.
the signs were promising, another great "what if" in Polish History.

The leaders of the 2nd Rep. did do a good job considering what they inherited. as Norman Davies said " 4 worthless currencies and the administrators of 3 dead empires"

UK, Ireland / Polish is Britain's second language, says UK report [52]

Manx is used on their Radio station at certain times in the day and for special occasions in their Parliament, i can't comment on everyday usage because i've honestly never met anyone from IOM!

but we get Manx Radio here in North West England

if you check out Manx Radios web feed, you can hear them ID on the hour in English & Manx.

Cumbrian seems extinct afaik

The Cornish language has developed underground long after it was officially extinct and will likely be kept alive by nationalists

cb88, not Liverpool but Manchester, Cheshire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire & Staffordshire :-)

The attractive Market town of Leek in Staffordshire has a Polish community ( i go there to buy my PL papers) and beautiful countryside that will take your breathe away, and the friendliest people i've ever met

when i bought Dziennik, the friendly English Shop assistant assumed i was Polish and greeted me in Polish.

i may as well cover all the Languages of these Islands.
Republicans/Nationalists in Northern Ireland use the Irish Language in the Northern Irish Parliment and then repeat the statement in English. the speaker of the house offered to use instant translation whereby the English speakers would receive an instant translation via headphones and the Republican speaker would use only Irish.

The Republicans rejected this because it would have made it obvious that many of their own members of parliment didn't understand what their leaders where saying in Irish!

the current system allows them to make their political point and then deliver their speech in the language their supporters really understand.

south of the border the Irish broadcaster RTE has recently begun to promote the learning of the Language and introduced Irish News broadcasts on RTE 1 & 2FM which are English for the rest of the day. a typical advert will go "have you got a spare 5 minutes?... why not practise your Irish!"

(I'd support a campaign like that to encourage the learning of Welsh in Wales & Western England)

the national 24 hour Irish Station is Radio Na Gael, during the day they broadcast traditional Irish folk mx and coverage of rural/Western Irish affairs but after 9pm they get freaky!

their late night programming is amazingly eclectic, i love to listen when we holiday in west wales

a few years ago the Radio 4 programme "The routes of Language" mentioned the fact that Indigenous Welsh Speaking Communities exist in Shropshire border towns like Oswestry, The local teacher was confused & amused by the Kids habit of scattering Welsh phrases into their English, like "oggies" for Hedges

when we drove through we did see some Welsh signs on the English side of the border, these communities can receive Welsh Broadcasting via "overspill" from Wales.

Welsh singers/songwriters & musicians have recently shot themselves in the foot, they have demanded an 10 x increase in the royalties they receive from BBC Radio Cymru, the end result? BBC Radio Cymru has reduced its broadcast day by 2 hours to cover the increased cost. So theres now less Welsh Language broadcasting at a time when the census shows that its needed more than ever! Dumb move or what?

i know less about the Scottish situation than Ireland as its further away, their Gaelic language station only broadcast a few hours a day and the station isn't as welcoming as R Cymru or R Na Gael. for some reason people all over the UK now see Gaelic language programmes on the BBC Parliament channel but not the more widely spoken Welsh.

as recently as the 70's it was possible to find Scots who knew only Gaelic, My Parents once took a boat ride with a ferryman who spoke no English

News / Poland A and Ukraine B. Compare how far Poland has advanced. [282]

the following defence of Ukraine in no way affects my argument that Lwow should never have been stolen from Poland ;-)

its unfair to compare UKR with PL, when you became free in 1989 you had a strong tradition of Independence, a clearly defined sense of nationhood and a free market tradition a mere 50 years previous, which you could build on much like the Baltic states & the Czech Rep.

Ukraine has no such traditions Ukrainians have had to build everything from scratch, thats without even considering the interference from Russia and the Large Russian Population "planted" in the East who oppose every move towards a western future. Ukranian political culture is not fully developed so we can expect more stupid stuff like giving honours to Bandera. but if you compare Ukraine to Kazakhstan, Belarus or Azerbaijan it starts to look positively democratic!

My Country has been guilty of lecturing Ukraine instead of helping them, Poland seems to have got things about right.

I think the best future for the Ukraine would be to ditch the Eastern provinces where Russians are the majority and Become a state with a Ukranian Majority able to chart a European future.

basically, we should give Ukraine time to develop while offering support and encouragement and giving them enough aid to become independant of Russia

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

don't read the Sun! - its a paper for retards who think Poland is where Santa Claus lives!

move to England but remember the North is best ;-)

actually we do owe Poland as many threads on this board have pointed out
we owe Poland in a way we don't owe the rest of Eastern/Central Europe, i know honour and loyalty are unfashionable but i don't care

Love / Are Polish girls open to foreigners? [78]

well in the UK my female Polish Doctor (recent arrival) is married to a Pakistani Doctor, and in Crewe they seem to be getting on well enough with the other nationalities

before 89 it didn't really matter so i guess it could have been a culture shock, but they seem to have got used to it.

I went into a Polish barbers decked out in Red & White with an amazing huge Eagle out front ( i still get a lovely buzz out of seeing the Eagle everywhere in Crewe) and Polish calendars and ads on the wall, they employed 2 Arab barbers and a Slovak beautician and everything was Hunky Dory, it gave me a lot of hope for the future. Polonia UK seems as inclusive and Tolerant as one could wish for

Language / Slavic accent correction [110]

don't worry about your accent, it would be a horrible depressing world if we all had boring neutral accents,
i like hearing the Slavic accents just like i love the Regional UK accents

something i just thought of:
Boston, Lincolnshire already has a very interesting East Midlands accent, when thats overlayed on a Polish accent, Poles who learn English there are going to have a very interesting & unique accent!

we had lunch in a pub that was run by an Iranian who had lived in Stoke-On-Trent for 40 years- he had a lovely accent

History / WWII - Battle of Britain and Poles [104]

well you know who had the highest kill rate of any Battle of Britain squadron don't you?
Poland could probably have held out over winter in the Romania Bridgehead if it wasn't for the Soviets, they managed to Defend Lwow from the Germans despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered, i guess when you've only had your state back for 21 years you value it enough to fight like Lions.

if i wore a hat i'd take it off to you guys

MarcinD: : Well, I'm a 47 year old woman with a 21 year old man...life is good! LOL!What could you two possibly have in common after the sex is over?

well personally speaking, it was common musical tastes that bought us together in one case, because i prefer late 70's early 80's Punk & post-punk to modern crap

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [512]

well to quote the cartoon in the xmas issue of Angora:
"w zyciu trzeba w cos wierzyc halino!"

I've always had positive feelings about Poland, blame my Dad..., and my mums kindly Polish employers. somehow it was there when i was growing up.

but i've got more serious lately, because i need a distraction from incurable chronic pain so it was either Poland or Heroin!

also its recently become possible to buy Polish newspapers here, so i realised that i'd never have a better chance to really throw myself into your wonderful culture

(this week its Wesola Lwowska falo!)

I'll be at the Katyn Memorial in Cannock 13/4/13 paying tribute in my own small way, I'm allergic to flowers so i took flower holders last time!

Love / Woman 23, man 47 years old. What do you think about ? [162]

I never thought i had a "type" but all the women i've dated have been older so i suppose i must have, possibly i seem older because of my arthritis.

when i was 27 i was involved with a 43 yr old and when i was 31 i was involved with a 46 yr old.
then they're have been ones only slightly older

i don't think age matters, it the end it wasn't the age gap that finished the relationship it was their failiure to be honest with me, the 2nd one actually thought she could hide a husband from me!

Ladies, and i can't stress this enough, please wear your wedding rings!
