Work / How is the living standard in Poznan? Does 5200 PLN enough for a decent living? [32]

i wouldn't be so sure of that.

Why? You do the math. A native speaker can on average earn 50zl ( this is an average based on personal experience. In some cases 40zl in others 60 + ) per teaching hour. Times that by a 30-40 hour week. I personally would not take a job for less than 40 zl p/h unless hours were guaranteed, then I'd except 35 zl p/h.

Just saying............

Teach hardly any Callan and if I do it's quite relaxed and not at all like the ROBOT way of doing Callan. I teach mostly at companies between 8-16.00 and schools in the evenings.100 % legit, everything paid. I can understand only getting 25 hours max if working at only one school but why limit yourself? I get around 25/26 hours from 1 school and in the evenings work at a second school which is another 12 hours give or take, and a guaranteed 6 hours on Saturdays with another school. I have a friend who has hardly any hours but I know that's because he's lazy and won't get off his arse to ask around the many schools around here. Maybe it's a "right place at the right time" kind of thing. Got another friend who's got 50 hours plus a week, but a lot of those are private students who come to his home.

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [91]

teflcat: As a musician I'd say that Poles sing in tune more than most Brits.

Seriously? Interesting.

I'm a musician too BTW

I'm also a musician, and just going by the singers ( if you can call them that ) on that program ( VOP ) I'd have to strongly disagree "that Poles sing in tune more than most Brits". But what do I know.................

Life / Automobiles vs. Pedestrians in Poland [77]

It's shocking here isn't it!

Drivers in Poland both love the rules but at the same time don't obey the rules. They will happily knock you over if they have the right of the road and love I mean LOVE letting other drivers know when they're breaking the rules but have no problem breaking the rules themselves.

I could give endless examples and if asked I will.

I'd love to hear anyone defend the drivers in this country. I've heard there are worse countries for driving in Europe but Poland has to be in the top 5.

Life / Graffiti problem in Poland [38]

Hi, this is a question mainly directed to our Polish friends. I was just wondering what you thought about the graffiti problem here in Poland. I'm not taking about the graffiti you can find on railway walls/ subways etc displaying artistic skills, but the kind of graffiti you can find on almost EVERY city building, the name tag. "John was here" "Lechia Gdansk" Etc....... There were/are a lot of buildings in Gdansk being re-painted, from the old grey concrete to light and bright colours, only to be vandalized a few days later. Before making an argument against this first check, the next time you travel through your city have a look at how many buildings actually have graffiti on. When I first mentioned this to my wife she got a bit annoyed, thinking I'm only saying bad things about Poland, the thing is it's not something she's looked for before. She now agrees with me.

Do you know anyone who does this type of thing? Any reasons to why they would want to vandalize peoples property ?

I'm sure the first few replies with be something along the lines of " well in England, US, Ireland........" I'm asking the question of Poland and what you think of it, nothing else.

THANKS :)

Life / Automobiles vs. Pedestrians in Poland [77]

I particularly like the highly developed custom of flashing warnings that traffic cops are near.

Yeah I love that too :) A bit of solidarity to other rule breakers

Polonia / How would an American Pole be treated while studying in Germany? [25]

You're American I assume so your question should be How would an American be treated while studying in Germany? How would they have any idea that you have Polish ancestry? Unless you walk around (like most Americans I know) telling people that you're Polish (in your thick American accent) before telling them that you're American......?

I always wondered why Americans do that (I'm Irish, born in Boston.............). Nothing against Americans, I've got quite a few American friends here in Poland but always wondered about that.

I'm English, my grandfather was Irish, I would never for a second tell people that I'm Irish...........

Jeez it sounds like I'm having a go at you but I'm not :)

I once read a book which had a list of Irish/American famous people in, Eddie Murphy was on the list.

P.S You wont have a problem. It's Europe, not the middle east lol

Food / Origin of the pierogi [118]

Oh but they can be baked. It's a different kind of dough though, made with yeast.

The baked pierogi (with yeast ) is basically like a British Pasty. Oh how I miss pasty shops........... beats a zapiekanka any day ;)

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

you were born to Polish parents

This too ;)

... If you're a man and you own a pair of corduroy trousers

... If you work at Urząd Miejski at the "information" desk and when someone comes for "information" you say to them "do you think I'm here to help you or something?"

... If you think it's normal when standing in a queue for a mans penis to be pressing up against your ass

... You work in a shop and huff when the customer doesn't give you the exact change even tough your till is full of change

... You're completely gobsmacked when someones says that they don't like Polish food

... You think it's OK to ballroom/jive/waltz dance with your partner when out at a busy Disco knocking into everyone, but the're the ones who should move out of the way for you

... You think UHT milk is great

... you think Britain has no traditional food only fish & chips and puddings

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

The question is which city has more chavs? Manchester or Birmingham?

It depends if you really do mean chav or maybe scally? There is a difference.

In Liverpool ( my home town ) there are plenty of scally's but no chavs.

But to answer you're question, I'd say that Manchester has more scally's and Birmingham has more chavs.

oh, and my favorite city is Gdansk, followed by Torun.

Gdansk because of the old town/beaches/forests/lakes close by and Torun cause it's small and has a nice old town/city centre.

Life / Are Polish roads really this bad? [237]

sorry but I have to agree with DriveSafe!! anyone defending Polish drivers are either Polish or idiots! I sometimes wonder how they passed their tests in the first place. Don't agree that its the lack of enforcement's fault too. what, because there are no police knocking around you can drive like a total f ing pr**k?! I feel so strongly about it as I have to walk /drive these streets with my daughter. the other day a car drives up to us does a handbrake turn then drives in the opposite direction. This is one of very many situations ive encountered. Also have to agree with poor DIM lighting. Street signs ARE a joke. Too many, Ive seen upto 7 signs on one post in places. Soon there will be sign posts warning you that in 20m there will be a sign.

Food / Can I buy Christmas crackers in Gdansk? [15]

Nope, I went to M&S Gdynia for the same reasons, to find some crackers and other British traditional Christmas bits but with no joy :(

I've been trying to find Swede/Turnip/Brukiew everywhere, again with no joy :( One the plus side Christmas will continue without those things :)
