Study / A Polish for foreigners school in the Lubin, Polkowice, or Chojnow area? [2]

I'm retired, living in Poland with my wife (Polka) and I would like to find a school where I can go once a week or so to learn Polish.

I am about equidistant from Lubin, Polkowice, and Chojnow. Does anyone know of schools offering Polish for obcy in this area? I'm not looking for work or higher education so formal recognition or degrees are not important. I just want to look less stupid when I meet the neighbors. :->

Food / Siemieniotka [14]

If you can't find hemp seeds, pot seeds will do. :->
My wife makes it each Christmas. She says it tastes horrible, but it wouldn't be Christmas without it. Her sons both love it so...

As my wife makes it it involves boiling the seeds, grinding them, boiling again, grinding again... repeat as many times as your patience allows.
At the last boiling add some onion, then when it's done salt and pepper to taste.
And she is Śląsk and only makes it at Christmas..

Oh, and throw away what's left of the seeds and the onions. Siemieniotka is the broth.
And my wife tells me I shouldn't say "grind" like meat I should say "hit it and beat it" like a husband

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

My wife and I just bought a house in Poland. While looking for a mały biały dom we found hundreds of half built places for sale at a low price. Maybe they could look into that? The caveat being, there might be a reason the original owner gave up on it...

Life / Question about hot water in Poland and the use of water heaters? [52]

I'm fairly new to Poland so my experience is limited and anecdotal, but from what I've seen space heating and hot water come mostly from city services in the cities and coal or wood furnaces in rural areas. Electric heaters and boilers are very expensive to run and gas lines don't exist in many areas. And when I asked my wife why we couldn't get a tank on the property and have gas delivered by truck she thought I was joking.

Food / Polish name for cut of beef [29]

if the cow is slaughtered in a distressing fashion

I think it has a lot more to do with the cow it came from. A young cow, milk fed, gives very tender meat. (veal) A dairy cow that has grown too old to produce will give tough stringy meat. Corn fed gives tender, fatty meat, range fed gives tougher, leaner meat....

And PLEASE don't use rib eyes for hamburger! It's a waste of a good steak and doesn't have enough fat to make a decent burger!

Party why Kobe beef is so good

They make them very very happy their whole life, not just at the end. Plus, they feed them beer lees, massage them daily and never allow them any exercise. I've heard the beef is great, but in a year and a half in Japan I never had enough money to try it.

Oh, and I think making Kobe beef burgers is a capital offense. lol
And yes, you can add fat to rib eye to make it a better burger, but why? I like my burgers, but a pan fried rib eye with mushrooms in a nice red wine sauce........

UK, Ireland / Corned beef & Cabbage are typically Irish? [98]

they did not ferment their food for preservation like Europeans did. I do not know how valid this theory is

Not very. Ever heard of soy sauce?

History / Are Poles grateful to the Russians for winning the war? [120]

After defeating German they took on Japan and slaughtered them in the East.

Took on Japan???? They declared war on Japan three days before the surrender AFTER the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
"they took on Japan and slaughtered them " might be a bit of an overstatement.

When sounds interesting?

Actually, Patton wanted to re-arm the Germans and head for Moscow after the German surrender. They might have gone for it!

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

Let's eliminate all the English words from Polish! Then all the French and Russian. Then of course, we have to get rid of the Latin and Greek. Get rid of ALL the foreign words. Then we have to resurrect all the archaic words, or we'll be left with a vocabulary of 12 words.

Language / Polish filler words? [24]

What about 'o'? (sp?) It's a really short, almost explosive sound. I hear it a lot, but it doesn't seem to mean anything.

And on the English side, you forgot "y'know?"

Life / Expats/Immigrants in Poland: Needy, Greedy or contributor. Which one are you? [118]

Needy - they are only in PL because the better half is Polish. They always have tales of grandeur, looking for a mug to buy them a pint in the expat hangouts and listen to their lost soul tales of woe.

Except my better half won't let me go to pubs and there don't seem to be any expat hangouts that I've been able to find, so I have to tell my tales of grandeur to the dog. The cats aren't interested.

News / US to deploy Patriot missiles to Poland [404]

hegemoniacal

Is that egomaniacal hegemony?

Turks shouldn't`t interfere. Simple, shouldn`t

Poles should interfere. But only on my side.

Life / The nature of Polish jokes? [124]

The Russians turns to the Pole and says "You are forbidden to leave the plane!" The Pole says "F**k you!" and jumps out.

Love / What strange/unnerving/funny things do your Polish wives do? [153]

Every time she lights a cigarette she tries to steal my lighter. If I don't snatch it back it disappears. On our first flight to Poland, back when lighters were completely forbidden, security found 14 lighters in her purse.

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

I do think that Canada is becoming too American.

How dare people generalize about Canadians being a**holes! After all, we're not Americans!
Is that what you're saying????

Love / What strange/unnerving/funny things do your Polish wives do? [153]

I've seen a Polish woman clean her child's face with saliva on a tissue.

My mother used to do that and she is not Polish. In her defense, the only handi-wipes available at the time were the lemon scented ones from KFC.

You needn't explain ;) ;)

Some of us are still trying to acquire your insiders knowledge!
Could it be that there is too much competition from "for profit" second hand stores? I've noticed quite a few of them and my wife gave me that blank stare of total incomprehension (I see it a lot) when I asked what charity they supported.

Life / Question about hot water in Poland and the use of water heaters? [52]

In our case the hot water was metered at the apartment and the heating charged according to a gadget on each radiator that somehow measured the heat used, not the amount of water through the radiator. My point (I have one) being that there were two completely different systems although it all came from the same plant.
