UK, Ireland / Cigarettes in Poland (cost, brands). The situation in the UK? [57]

Yes, the Customs and Excise Management Act of 1979 no longer applies to anybody at all, which is why people who have 20kg of smack in their bags are now allowed to say "Fcck you copper! I ain't opening sht." when asked to open their bags.

UK, Ireland / The truth about the purchasing of cigarettes in the UK [11]

If you get pulled by the UKBA, dont let them touch anything.

Smart move: give them all the suspicion that they need that you have something to hide and give them due cause to check what you've got up your ringpiece. They claim that you were acting in a suspicious way and that your actions when challenged raised further suspicion and that is all they need to stick fingers up your arse. But whatever floats your boat.

welshguyinpolaThey would be stupid to even try that since the stop they made in the first place was illegal and at the same time I am recording everything on my mobile phone/dictaphone. Thye cannot touch you and any attempt to on their part is completely illegal so going for my ringpiece will get them in the ****.

If you seriously believe this rubbish, why are you limiting yourself to making a few buttons smuggling 50 cartons of fags? Go speak to some Turkish smack dealers in Amsterdam about buying 10kg from them and then selling it on in UK. After all, UKBA can not look in your bags or touch you and it is illegal for them to even try.

Life / Expats/Immigrants in Poland: Needy, Greedy or contributor. Which one are you? [118]

The teachers at my schools as well as several other poles that I knew that would get bogus doctor notes or drag out their "illnesses" and stay out of work as long as possible because Poland's socialist system is willing to pay for it year after year.....yeah, certainly paid into that.

And let's not even go into the women who carefully time pregnancy, maternity leave, illness, holiday (of course they have full holiday allowance for all the time that they were off) and then getting pregnant again.

OMG- that just happened at my school - the woman was planning pregnancy in the summer - she has another etat in the state school and guess what? She is pregnant and already on a sick leave - because of the pregnancy- but she is fine - she is collecting sick leave benefits at the moment and there is NOTHING wrong with her- I personally find it revolting - to abuse they social security like that!!!!!!!

I know a guy who has a female employee he hasn't even seen for five years (two kids plus six months' holiday plus a bit of sick leave), but she's still an employee.

Travel / Why does everyone seem to hate LOT Polish Airlines? [380]

Ironside
I checked in and I was late about two minutes for my plane

So LOT did exactly the right thing. That's superb to hear: I'll make sure to use LOT for my next trip, now I know they deny Polacks boarding if they can't be bothered to get to the gate on time. Marvellous news.

Few years ago I flew from WAW to BWI and during check in I was asked wheter I am US permanent resident or citizen. Now,I didn't know they have to ask that when they can't find US visa in Polish passport and I was in a bad mood that day so I told this women that it's none of her bussines.

Actually, they have to pay a fine for every illegal immigrant like you which they bring to the USA, so it is their job to check your paperwork.

News / British man prosecuted for raping teenage girls in Kraków [47]

MyMom
He is being accused of sexual assault on three teenage girls, one of them is under 15.

The only thing which surprises me about this case is that it took so long for it to happen. It was always a 'when', not an 'if'.

And I absolutely guarantee you that unless Poland introduces background checks for people who work with children (or at the very least for people who work unsupervised with children), the second case will be a 'when', not an 'if'.

here is a summary of the case

Actually, there is a press release about the case which was put out by Hoverspeed. Hoverspeed want as many people as possible to cross the channel. So is their release likely to be unbiased?

welshguyinpola
You are the kind of person that UKBA love Delphi, uquestioning, open ur bag straight away type.

Why shouldn't he open his bag immediately? He has nothing to hide: he isn't the one claiming that 10000 cigarettes are for his personal use.

Genealogy / ORP Błyskawica Crew Records? [46]

@sushka

Your story is very similar to one I read recently in a Polish paper:
Gdansk In Your Pocket had the pleasure this week of meeting a man called Stefan Paliwoda, a British man of Polish descent, who had travelled to the Tri-city to visit amongst other things, the Polish WWII destroyer Błyskawica.

I cannot believe for a minute that maternity labour laws are that generous in any country, let alone Poland.

Believe what you want: the reality is that women in Poland can take years off. As of 1 January 2012 maternity leave will be 20 weeks, plus holiday allowance earned for that time. However, it is simple to find a doctor who will sign a mother-to-be as unable to work from the third month of pregnancy onwards, meaning leave can easily be 11 months, plus the five weeks' holiday allowance earned in that time, which makes more than a year.

rozumiemnic
They certainly didn't have to pay me.

Whether you claimed maternity pay or not is up to you; however, if you had a full-time contract, you were entitled to it, at 100% of your average salary over the past year.

News / British man prosecuted for raping teenage girls in Kraków [47]

isthatu2
And while my fellow Britons are smugly touting Background checks as the answer may I remind them of the fully background checked women caught fiddling with young children in that Portsmouth Nursery? CRB only goes so far. All they really mean is you have a clean record, plenty of people dont get caught,no record.

No checking system will ever be perfect, people will slip through, mistakes will be made, only a person's past can be checked, not their future. However, any system is better than none at all, doing anything is better than doing nothing: Poland has no checking system at all and is doing nothing at all to introduce one. This will have entirely predictable results.

isthatu2
To the tit who seems to think only expats are a threat, yes,of course,no Pole would ever do anything perverted would they......

Of course not. And if a Polish man's sperm is found inside a rape victim who has been very nearly beaten to death, why that is simply proof of an anti-Polish plot!

is the key to this two words? The Church.....

I doubt it: the checking process for working with vulnerable kids in Polish state institutions (e.g. orphanages) are pretty rigorous, but it is waived entirely for priests.

ShortHairThug
What are you implying Harry?

I am stating very clearly that whatever the reason for Poland failing to introduce proper background checks for people who work with children actually is, it is highly unlike that the church has anything to do with there being no background checks: priests are already exempted from the checks done on people working with vulnerable kids in Polish state institutions.

ShortHairThug
The problem is the law, IMHO much to lenient on the convicted perpetrators, in cases like this when this sort of crime involves a minor, a life in prison should be standard or even a death penalty should be applied in cases where perpetrator had been convicted of multiple or repeat offence.

Which is why the president of Poland got his lawyers involved in helping Hollywood's most famous paedophile.

There should be full police checks on all foreigners applying for residency.

There used to be some checks, they were how the axe-murderer who worked at the same school as me was caught, although that was due to Interpol being on the lookout for him rather than the guy having past form.

your countrymen are the undisputed world champions of raping and torturing women

And murdering women, you forgot about the special Sebian talent for murdering women.

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

And yet again Polonia prove that:
a) there is an 80% chance that somebody who is Polonia is also a moron;
b) when it comes to Poland, there should be no representation without taxation. People who choose not to do anything to help Poland should not be allowed to have any say in how Poland is run.

have anyone of you ever cared to see how many people are eligible to vote in America - 50 000?

stupid expatriate jackasses

Do you think that you could perhaps manage to contribute to this thread without insulting other posters. Thank you in advance.

Des Esseintes
Thats only 1 out of every 400 Polish-Americans.

That would depend on how elastic one's definition of Polish-American is. According to the Polish-American Association close to 500,000 people in the USA are entitled to vote in Polish elections. I wonder how many, if any, of them pay any taxes in Poland or do anything else which benefits Poland in any way.

Text removed due to its utter tediousness and complete predictability

I note that you have not a word to say about why people who neither live in Poland nor in any way contribute to Poland should have any say in the running of Poland. Instead you focus your post on a frankly pathetic attempt to provoke me into reacting so that you can run crying to the mods yet again. Sorry but that isn't going to work. I'm not going to insult you, not even if you call my grandmother Ukrainian.

But do feel free to post yet more insults instead of trying to defend the shameless actions of the idiots from Polonia. We all know that they have no moral right to effect live in a country which they have chosen to abandon and continue to shun: this is not their country, they have betrayed this country. But for some reason you leap to their defense. Strange. Could it be that you are trying just a little too hard to be Polonia?

Des Esseintes
you and your clique, may believe that you are "civilizing" Poland by teaching some English

Are you actually able to discuss things without insulting people? It looks very much that you are not.

Des Esseintes
People that are citizens of Poland should be allowed to vote in Polish elections regardless of where they live.

If they have turned their backs on Poland, rejected Poland, renounced all allegiance to Poland and do not do a single thing for Poland, they should not have that right. Rights are accompanied by responsibilities: these people have refused to accept their responsibilities and so should be stripped of their rights.

Des Esseintes
Voting in elections is contributing.

No, it is exercising a privilege. People who refuse to help Poland should not be granted such privileges.

Des Esseintes
their level of "contribution"

We cannot talk about their level of contribution: these people contribute nothing to Poland. But they still think that they should still have the right to tell Poles how Poland should be run. Pathetic.

People who think that there is such a thing as "pierogies" shouldn't be allowed to decide how Poland is run, simples.

There is a more simple rule: anybody who calls their grandmother "Busia" should have no say in how Poland is run.

A British immigrant, who came to Poland for a paycheck or for other selfish reasons, is not a Pole, and paying taxes won't change that. They should better stick to discussing "Jews and Czechs", yeah, that's what they contribute.

Clearly you can not be talking about me: I wasn't born in Britain (and neither were my parents) and I came to Poland to do voluntary work at the invitation of the Polish government. But do feel free to tell us all about all the wonderful things you do for Poland.

these backwards monarchist morons.

I wonder how long you will be allowed to get away with substituting insults for argumentation.

Des Essientes
regardless of where they currently find themselves residing

It is not where they find themselves to be: it is where they choose to be. They choose to reject Poland, soon Poland will choose to reject them.

MyMom
Are you not a British citizen? Are you ashamed of your nationality?

I have more than one citizenship and qualify for several others.

MyMom
Did you not receive a paycheck from Poles?

90zl per week. A total amount which is repaid many times over each year by the taxes I choose to pay in Poland.

MyMom
Why would we give voting rights to the random individuals who come here for money or other selfish reasons?

Why do Poles expect to be given voting rights when they move to other countries for money or other selfish reasons? And why do some 'Poles' think that as well as getting those rights they should maintain the same rights in the country which they abandoned money or other selfish reasons?

You do not choose to pay taxes in Poland. You have to do so under Polish law.

Yes, but one can very easily, and entirely legally, take the amount of taxes down to a level far below that which I currently pay.

Des Esseintes
I feel sorry for you because you think you need to do more than exist as a citizen of your nation to be given the right to vote.

How surprising to see you putting forward such an entirely selfish attitude. Those of us who live in Poland are very grateful that Poles are not as utterly focused on their own selves as self-identified members of Polonia are. Poles work together for the good of Poland and know that it is their duty to do that. They understand that with rights come responsibilities. This is one of the many reasons why Poles have so little time for those who reject Poland with their actions but claim Poland with their words.

Des Esseintes
Someday soon we may even get rid of governments all together.

It will be a day much sooner when people who reject Poland are stripped of their right to vote in Polish elections.
