History / Polish pirates [58]

A pirate walks into a bar and the bartender says, "Hey, I haven't seen you in a while. What happened, you look terrible!"

"What do you mean?" the pirate replies, "I'm fine."
The bartender says, "But what about that wooden leg? You didn't have that before."
"Well," says the pirate, "We were in a battle at sea and a cannon ball hit my leg but the surgeon fixed me up, and I'm fine, really."

"Yeah," says the bartender, "But what about that hook? Last time I saw you, you had both hands."
"Well," says the pirate, "We were in another battle and we boarded the enemy ship. I was in a sword fight and my hand was cut off but the surgeon fixed me up with this hook, and I feel great, really."

"Oh," says the bartender, "What about that eye patch? Last time you were in here you had both eyes."
"Well," says the pirate, "One day when we were at sea, some birds were flying over the ship. I looked up, and one of them shat in my eye."

"So?" replied the bartender, "what happened? You couldn't have lost an eye just from some bird *****"
"Well," says the pirate, "I really wasn't used to the hook yet."

History / Polish pirates [58]

they were Slavs as are Poles. They are recognizably Polish on both counts

So are Serbians - but they aren't recognisably Polish. Except maybe to Crow.

the great Slavic Peopl

There is no more a 'Slavic people' than there is a 'Germanic people' or a 'Latin people'.

Slavic pirates of the Adriatic.

Who are obscure by the mists of time.

especially in South-East Asian waters, and they are brutal murderers.

It's certainly getting worse month by month off the coast of Somalia. A real problem. And the Somali pirates are getting bolder. Certainly none of them are Polish, but some of the crew members taken by them are.

I have to do a course soon about what to do if attacked by pirates. Should be interesting, but I hope I'll never need it.

News / POLES FEEL LIKE JEWS HAVE TOO MUCH CONTROL IN POLAND - TRUE? [209]

Well, he must have found it somewhere - even he is not able to come up with
such enormous cr*p himself :)

Some racist websites have those lists - entirely ficticious, listing every public figure they don't like and some they do.

I'd call it pure paranoia, however there's a real streak of evil in there.

Language / Polish Language classes - what do your lessons look like? [21]

? I've never seen its advertisements, not to mention "aggresive" advertisements.

I have. Plus a lot of mysterious comments on internet fora. The ones in the list above however have a proven reputation.

I would too. A combination of all those posts plugging this glossa setup, the strange English that a native from Bristol would never, ever use but which a Pole stylistically would, and the fact that Dalloway isn't a usual surname outside the novels of Mrs Woolf.

All a bit suspect, really.

Stuff like this on other fora - it seems like glossa are spammers - one good reason to avoid them. The following is only one of many

I think that classes should be diverse or at least there should be some extra workshops in the afternoon or evening. I participated in a Polish course in August at Glossa School in Cracow and there were many fun activities and workshops: watching films, cooking and tasting traditional Polish food and many trips for free. I remember Polish Christmas party with pierogi, mushroom soup and singing carrols. It was a great fun! frdalloway

There is that. A bit like Bahrain where there are European-style pubs on the 10th floor of a building.

I wonde where else there is to go in Warsaw now Morgans and that place by Metro Wilanowska are gone. I think the Irish Embassy staff go to Bradleys sometimes, which is a bit of a seal of approval. Do you know what Legends is like?

Language / Special Polish Prayers / (Funeral too) that stand out [12]

[Moved from]: Condolences in Polish

Can anyone suggest something to write in Polish as a condolence. It should be a one-liner. The deceased was an 88 year old retired lawyer. I never met him, but know his son and nephew. The son has just invited me to the funeral via facebook, but I can't attend.

A couple of million others like you, and people wouldn't bother with St Patrick's Day anyway.

Might but doesn't - the East European obsession with Jews is far older than that.

Friedirich Nietzshe who had Polish Roots

Well, he created the concept of a master race - he considered Jews and Chinese people to be part of it.

I think that Smolensk was done by Jews too.

Comedy. Everyone knows it was a Russian guy shining mirrors/lazers/blowing smoke into the pilot's eyes.

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

AGAIN the owner showed the Flat on Saturday to her brother and said she would tell him what the price would be on Monday (yesterday) then called him and said "It does not calculate, I am not going to rent!" ?????????????? WTF!? Why would she list it and show it if 2 days later she says NO????

Playing silly mind games, with a clear financial goal. Not unusual in Poland, sadly.

Well, she will be there in two days.... maybe she will be able to find something for us... I hope.

No no no no. Ignore her and be terse about it. If she has anything for you, she will change her tune quick enough, if not, move on.

Did not think it would be so hard to rent a flat in Gdynia.

It isn't. Try onet or gumtree. it is a renters' market.
