Off-Topic / Something to Occupy Your MOND: What's the Matter with Dark Matter? [3]

Doubts...and agreements with Milgrom's model. Very interesting. Hopefully we see more development in this area.

This development would change a lot, including our understanding of gravity. Exciting stuff.

It also shows how important philosophy is to science. There are some who believe philosophy is obsolete because of science.

Polonia / Which country is better SPAIN or POLAND [100]

It would be good to see a memorial and an official apology in Poland though

Maybe, I don't know enough about it to have an opinion.

Why were the camps built by Sikorski? Why did he think they were needed?

One of the reasons I've stayed so long was just the pure fascination of seeing a civil society slow emerging from the communist wreckage

It is fascinating. I've been going over since 2001 and the transformation has been remarkable. A lot of positive. However, the attitudes if some of the younger folks has changed from previous generations. Some of it good, but some bad. The younger generation is much more arrogant and disrespectful. When I first visited I was impressed by how the youth treated their elders with respect. That is disappearing.

Closest I've come to Spain is reading Hemingway.

News / Polish universities for Polish students (only?) [47]

So, in a way a bunch of students from these two countries (especially) could help increase Poland's soft power in the region

Yeah, but it's more probable they are wooing Belorussians and Ukrainians for the same reason American authorities and universities woo Indian and Chinese students: infusion of cash money (not financed money) and the prospect of cheap white-collar labor.

and is admitted, a Polish student will not be because that spot was given to a foreigner.

Novichok has a good point. Should a deserving Polish student be denied admittance to accommodate foreign students (if, that, indeed, is actually happening)?

@atch

A deserving student is one who meets the admission's requirements. It doesn't matter what one thinks about the quality of the standards, the standards are what they are and if a student meets those standards then he should get in.

I have no idea if Polish students are being denied admission to make room for foreign students or if foreign students are draining resources. If foreign student are doing the above, it's a good question to ask if this practice should continue, IMO.

There is no such thing as the United States of Europe-BB, is trying hard to bring about one, but it hasn't yet come to fruition.

The EU is not a place, but a political body, therefore it cannot be a capital.

Anyhow, I ask again: in regards to Polish universities, what are you saying needs to be held accountable and why does EU officials need to hold it accountable?

@oath

We consider ourselves a republic, as opposed to a federation- but, I'm splitting fine hairs here. :)

Anyhow, it'd be interesting to know what Lyzko thinks Polish universities need to be held accountable for.

The great Jewish comedian Jackie Mason died yesterday. He is an example of a Jew who proves your theory wrong, Novichok. This type of generalization is intellectually grotesque.

History / Why didn't Britain declare war on USSR for invading Poland in 1939? [47]

Could it be as simple as the Brits agreement with Poland was to protect Poland against Germany, and not the SU? In other words, Britain honored it's agreement when Germany attacked. There was no such agreement regarding attack from SU.

Interesting question.

I'd say that the agreement became enforceable in Sept 1939, hence Britain declaring war on Germany. I guess you could argue the "protecting" part of the agreement ended in October; but, that's academic. When Britain declared war-it was on!

@Lyzko

That's kind of a banal reply, Lyzko.

What specifically does the Polish universities need to be held accountable for and why is it the EU needs be involved?

@Maf

From your perspective, do the Polish students have, at least, a semblance of a legit complaint?

My wife graduated from AMU, so, naturally, I brought this "controversy" up to her and we got to talking about admissions to AMU. She brought up the same thing you did: the recent reforms. From what she understands, she agrees with you that it's dumb.

I get what your saying about late bloomers.

Is there still the option to pay to attend a Polish university if you don't make the matura ranking?

Obviously, you don't have to answer this, but what you do over there in Polska, maf?

@ Lyzko

Focus, Lyzko, focus.

You're not answering the question. The question is whether or not foreign students are taking the seats of Polish students in normal Polish university programs. You said the universities need to be held accountable for this by the EU. I asked for clarification of what needs to be held accountable and why Brussels, ie the EU, needs to be involved.

PS-the beautiful woman analogy, you're dangerously close to humor there, Lyzki, be careful, you might hurt yourself. :):D

History / Why didn't Britain declare war on USSR for invading Poland in 1939? [47]

Seems an odd claim since Britain did declare war on Germany on Sept 3, 1939 even though it wasn't prepared for war at that time. Seems to me whether they intended to honor the agreement when made or not is moot. They did honor it-maybe not with the hoped for outcome, but it did honor it.

I should've searched before piping off.

Morton Sobell. According to the articles below Sobell implicated Ethel knowing what was going on, but says her involvement was exaggerated.

So,

Not quite:

Agreed.

How did this thread get on to 1950s spy scandals?

Uhhhh...because it's PF.

@ Pawian

😆 You pretty much nailed it.

Do you want me to list the names of these rabble-rousers in the USSR

Then, to be fair, you'll need to list the Jews who have worked to advance liberty, democracy, capitalism, etc.

The broad brush approach is intellectually grotesque. Communism and fascism was a collective effort that ran across all ethnicities. As the fight against those evils ran across all ethnicities.

Quoting those to skew the stats is dishonest.

As are over generalizations. Not only are they dishonest, but stultifying perpetuations of simplistic thinking and catalysts of perpetual discord.

Jewish people have plenty to be criticized for, but so does every other group of people. Not any group of people or individual person is above reproach. Problem is when we assign the negative aspects as the only defining aspect to each group. A scapegoat is always much easier to deal with, than the actual complexity of a problem.

Anyhow, Pawian, is on to something regarding answering the question posed by the OP.

Travel / How long are you allowed to occupy a shared bathroom in Poland? [21]

Pi*ss - 2, crap - 3. Shower - 6. Call it the 236 rule

I'm with you on the 2 minute pi$$, factoring in hand washing 2 minutes is plenty.

However, I have issues with a 3 minute crap and 6 minute shower.

While a 3 minute crap is commendably efficient, it's too mechanical-sort of inhuman. Takes away the, uh, what's the word...ambiance. Yes, ambiance. A good human crap should have a certain ambiance. This shouldn't be rushed.

It's not simply some mechanical function like some task in a machine shop-grab a piece of metal, drill a hole in it, drop it in hopper and done! No, no, it's much more meditative and experiential. There's even some symbolism in it. Granted, there's some unpleasantries attached to it, but what worthwhile thing in life doesn't have it's hardships?

A 6 minute shower is downright barbaric. Even worse, actually, it's more like serving a life sentence in a Gestapo-ran jail while under constant KGB surveillance while having your balls busted by a basic training drill sergeant. You can barely collect your thoughts in 6 minutes, let alone clean your filth and properly dry your fellas. Nah, you gotta double up that time just to meet the minimum time needed.

However, this is all mitigated when on holiday using a shared facility. In that case, a minute to whizbang, 2 to drop a load (every other day), and clean your dirty a$$ either in the river, lake, or some park fountain.

Life / Paintings of artists from Poland? [174]

City life diverse externally yet empty internally and overcast, while rural life simple yet bright and tranquil? The rural and urban are intertwined, each a connected part of the whole? Or, is it new life in the country is built upon the hollow urban experience?

Sort of interesting, not crazy about the drawerly style. Nice colors, though.

though neo-surrealism has a real market nowadays. Hyper-realism too.

The skills and techniques to produce those types of work are amazing, but as a piece of art they are boring as hell.

Off-Topic / Freedom of Expression in the EU? [87]

I'm not a Euro so I don't understand the ins-and-outs of the EU all that well.

Regardless of what one thinks of homosexuality...

...I'm wondering how does this:

Germany's justice system of putting European standards at risk after a Cologne court fined a Polish theologian for an article describing gay people in the Catholic clergy as "parasites."

The court imposed the €4,800 penalty on Dariusz Oko, a conservative theology professor based in Krakow, for inciting hatred through his article in a German magazine on alleged homosexual influence in the Vatican.

politico.eu/article/germany-poland-dariusz-oko-lgbtq-influence-vatican/

not offend this:

Article 11 - Freedom of expression and information

1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers.

2. The freedom and pluralism of the media shall be respected.

fra.europa.eu/en/eu-charter/article/11-freedom-expression-and-information

I get that it was the German court that fined the priest--not the EU, per se, but Germany is a full-fledged member of the EU, is Germany not relegated to uphold the Fundamental Rights Charter? I understand it is being appealed, but if the priest loses appeal can he appeal to the EU courts? How does the EU not intervene in these things? How does Article 11 get enforced? How does what the priest wrote in his article not get protection under Article 11?
