Real Estate / Residential real estate values go down in Poland [455]

The housing market is seeing a continued decline in the prices of apartments. In November 2011, the average decrease for the 15 major cities was 1.5%, according to a reported prepared by Szybko.pl, Metrohouse and Expander

The news on falling prices just keeps on getting worse...

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

I was reading recently about recently widowed women in NYC going hungry - that doesn't tend to happen in Europe.

Correct.. about 40million us citizens live in poverty, there is poverty in Poland too, but Mr D please explain the safety net in poland/eu? first time I heard of it.

Tom - take one piece of advice from me. Never trust anyone in Poland until you know them well, not even your own in-laws.

Even people who put up posts on this forum lol, Mr D the gentleman has nothing now, so whether he lives in Ireland or Poland it makes no difference? He is doing what you did in moving to Poland, another case of the young gentlemen with no means seeking to make his fortunes abroad!!

Law / Bureaucracy in Poland [53]

And I don't like the way Poles tend to always put their country down, even when it is no worse than any other country in the world.

lol... what utter rubbish. I am still waiting for permission to build a house in Poland and have spend almost 2 years fight with the authorities. Magdalena who are you trying to fool?

Work / What is a good salary in Wroclaw? (coordinator position for an IT company) [27]

With respect to vodka and cigarettes - it's not worth it

I'm sure that saving a few hundred zlote is just a pee in the ocean for people like you and me, but a lot of people cross the board and purchase fuel, vodka cigarettes and sweets, the normal process is for 4 or 5 people to make a day of it and travel to the ukraine, fuel to my best recollection is about 1-2 zlote cheaper, alcohol and sweet about a quarter of the price of that in Poland. The vodka is as rough as it gets and the sweets are too sweet for me, give food products a miss as I would hate to know the hygiene laws are observed in that country, the boarder side hmmn yes it can be a long wait, but with plenty of cheap booze and cigarettes time goes very fast.. Mr D understand that in most small cities people are struggling and a small saving is a big bonus..sorry to go off topic but this has to be clarified.

Not worth it really - the queues are so long to enter/leave Belarus that it just isn't economically worthwhile

sorry mr d, but this not true, apart from getting a tank full of cheap fuel, plus another 40 odd litres in containers, you also buy vodka, cigarettes and sweets at never to be repeated prices....only draw back is the wait at border control...

Real Estate / Residential real estate values go down in Poland [455]

I can totally see a house for its potential- not its current state

Pip if you were doing it to zero in on the Canadian market I would agree, poles have a different mentality, they look at it differently (things may change in the future) for the Polish market, do a place up and you will get the same as if it was in its original state...I agree with you about Polish real estate agents though, there absolutely shockers!

There are some interesting economic phenomena around the corner and we could all be surprised

you mean a economic black cloud...no one wants to speak gloom and doom for obvious reasons, but when you speak to financial expects privately most agree a severe downturn is on the horizons....may not have a severe impact on Polish real estate as Poles don't sell at bargain basement prices, developers may have to wear the brunt..The government may have to cut spending etc....people on fixed income ie pensioners will have it hard..

If you have got euros to invest today, taking into consideration that the average EUR/PLN was about 3.80-1 over the last 2-3 years. At Euro/PLN 4.6-1 plus the decrease in prices 10-12% you are already close to - 30%.

Thats correct.... People who brought expensive homes say two years ago have certainly got their fingers burnt...30% plus and worse to come....if a person invested his 1m$ for the two years it would be 30% plus... The dollar 2 years ago was about 2.82 now its 3.50.

Love / Amount of money for gift (I have a girlfriend in Poland) [56]

[quote=a.k.]I feel sorry for you, you probably have nothing to offer besides money... therefore you will never experience a true love.

Unless your a mind reader I don't know what this has to do with my comments, I was only making a few points about what people expect when giving gifts....I'm sure there are other valid points which have been raised...I don't think giving somebody in Poland 20$ is a good idea...

Love / Amount of money for gift (I have a girlfriend in Poland) [56]

And to answer your question; if it's a scarf, I'd keep it and reciprocate with a tie or something, and a nice note. But, if it's $20, I'd send it back with impersonal x-mas wishes, and maybe a thinly veiled suggestion for a cheritable donation, if I can think of one. ;)

Not a bad answer, however the tie would be filed away and never see the light of day, ties have reached there expiry date, doubt if they will be a fashion statement in the near future...

Consider the possibility that some of those Polish women' calculator skills you keep bringing up could have been acquired after they met you. ;)

I'm a easy target, you may want to divulge your skills at winning over the hard earned earnings of the person of your life!!!, just joking the bottom line is the author of this post wanted to know what was enough to forward to a loved one.. would you accept a $20 from the US of A as a xmas gift....somehow I don't think so...

in the context of the relationship, which in actual fact is nothing, then i stand by what i said.

Now Mr Wroclaw, my comments were intended to be light hearted, but if you want to be serious, can I ask you a question would you sent a person you fell in love with a nice winter scarf? somehow I don't think so.. Unfortunately Poles are too serious, its time they laugh at themselves like the rest of us do.

//-->

What on earth are you talking about, you silly man??

Well f stop, you may be right, but can I suggest you take up a course in reading and understanding english..good luck.

send a card and a nice winter scarf. that should be enough.

Expect more from you than this comment Mr Moderator... !!! The fact remains that if you like somebody the skys the limit when it comes to gifts, 1000zl in this context is peanuts for somebody living in the west... The Americans have always big noted how rich they are and conned many a Polish Lass, the naive Polish girl eyes water and ears prick when she hears she is about to meet a man from America lol.. In truth the Americans are as poor as anybody else and current figures suggest that some 40 million Americans live below the poverty line.. This has brought about a generation of Polish people who are good at using the calculator and experienced in the art of gold digging...Sending a winter scart would find its way to a place other than being wrapped around the neck...more likely in the rubbish bin.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

The vast majority of Poles abroad seem to be staying where the are,so would this not point to real estate prices remaining high. There was talk and speculation that they were returning home, but this seems to be untrue in reality.

Milky, If you were to believe reports from the UK that their economy is not looking good, I think many, many poles will be returning home..unfortunately in Poland, like other countries in the EU, they will experience a future shock in lay terms a king hit as Europe falls into recession. Its not looking good....the golden rule now applies don't fall into debt..

Work / Chemistry degree - what are my chances of finding work in Poland? [29]

Pam on a positive note, its not that expensive to live in Poland if you have little expectations and want to enjoy the Polish way of life....a lot of comments on this topic are from people who think that you need to earn 10000zl a month to survive, this is utter rubbish, a lot of people earn 1500zl a month and get on with life.. Poland is full of surprises especially if you have a pleasant nature.. Good Luck and give it a go...

I welcome all suggestions, what to do with $100,000 today (investing in any currency).

Don't think I would want to invest in the zlote or euro....seems that currency investment is the way to go at the moment..

Work / Expected salary for an engineer in Poland? [24]

absolutely, dream on as they say in the movies... but understand this person may have earned 5 times as much where he comes from and to earn 3000zl is a bit below the belt..A lot of people cannot understand low income for professional occupations, but you have to understand everyone in Poland has a degree in some form or other...

Law / I am starting a new business life in Poland (coming from Sydney) [84]

really, what about this!

Hello,

I am 36 yrs of age and have just quit my good, secure job in Sydney because I decided the time is right to move to Poland and explore business opportunities. The immediate plan is to find a job teaching English and/or working for a company who may need people to service their English speaking clients but I will keep an open mind and consider any job to support myself. This should give me a pretty good idea to see how things work there and to familiarize myself on the local customs. I can speak basic Polish which is of course very advantageous but I am keen to improve and I am confidant it will. I also have family there so I won't be totally alone.

My ultimate goal is to setup a little cafe somewhere and build from there. I am also interested in the idea of setting up an import/export company but I will think about this more once I have established myself.

I was so ignorant that I went cross-country skiing and trekking in the mountains instead!

Great stuff, ok when your young and fit, the point I was trying to make is that the climate the gentleman has in Australia is more user friendly than that in Poland... Winter is nice in its own way in Poland but this young turk has better things to do than gallivanting around the countryside, the dollar is on his mind and making a bucket full in Poland represents a challenge.
