Back to the uprisings....what brought it about and what went wrong? Need my history lesson for the day....


OK.. I teach myself....Wikipedia says that it was started by young people who were rebelling against being forced into involuntary labor in the Russian army, and that it was the longest uprising-lasting for two years. The article also says that no cities were recaptured and the Poles had to resort to guerilla tactics. Russia retaliated against the Poles with executions and deportations to Siberia.

So I'm thinking that the "will to fight" was there, but there was not enough support, organization, and communication to pull it off. Otherwise, there may have been a very different outcome.

But I also think that the enormous bloodshed described is tragic, for so little to have been gained. But if I were in the same situation, and things were bad enough, I might to choose to fight and be free in death, if necessary, rather than to live in oppression.

Patrycja, were there any records kept of the deportations as a means to trace your family member? Wasn't everyone required to carry "papers" in those times to get through check points?

Witek, maybe the uprisings did not seem worth it to you because the desired result was not acheived. But to the people who stood up and fought, the cause was worthwhile enough to them to lay down their lives for what they believed. I have to respect that.

Sounds like Phoenix LOL! A white-knuckle ride to any destination. And if it is raining and the desert flash floods pop up over the freeway, oh my god! It is hard to brake down from 70 mph to stopping!

Lt Navy, I think you experienced a truely toxic drama queen (and maybe with some bi-polar disorder thrown in there too).

A few years ago there was a woman (American) that worked in my department that "wrapped men around her finger" and then took them on a nut-case roller coaster ride. She lied, played games, got hysterical and very dramatic when things didn't go her way, and sometimes I think she tried to "start something" just because it was "too quiet". If one guys wasn't around, she go looking for the other one, and play them off against each other. (Did I mention that she received child support checks from three separate men in different states for her child?) Despite her looks and cunning ways, eventually she got such a reputation that no one would go near her (she also liked to get restraining orders). And she didn't limit her craziness to personal relationships, she was bizarre at work as well. We all knew we were in for a rough time if she came to work with no make-up on. She couldn't take any type of constuctive criticism on her job performance, it was perceived "as everyone is against me". You couldn't even reason with her, she could not even make a logical point. That girl was a train wreck. Even higher-ups in management didn't want to deal with her. No one would meet with her alone in a room (too afraid of some wild accusation might occur), everything had to be done with a witness present.

You are very lucky to be rid of this person if she was anything like this (and sounds a lot like the woman I knew).

Run as fast as you can and do not look back!

They aren't good places to meet someone. How can you introduce yourself if no one can hear you? And after you get home, you can still hear buzzing in your ears!

There are better places to meet people- bookstores, coffee houses (quieter acoustic music), classes, a gathering at a friends home, etc.

We've all been in this situation :) Don't let it bum you out.

You can take regular pictures and either make them digital with a scanner, or now many film developers will put your photos on a cd, as a digital file. You don't have to use a digital camera :)

What's bizzare is that some of these couples are still together/married and are probably only together, because the Polish parent knows he/she will not see their child again if they divorce. Interesting that one Polish child could travel out of Germany to other countries, but not permitted to visit family in Poland.

And why such variation in "punishment' for speaking Polish to your children, ranging from completely being cut off from the child (no visitation, no contact, nothing).....to being forbidden to speak Polish to the child or help the child with homework?.

Well, I guess here is the answer to the other thread "can mixed culture relationships work?" Yes, but be careful! I'm having flashbacks of that movie "Not Without My Daughter".

In US, parents try to "steal" child away from custodial parent at times, but usually has more to do with hurting the other parent than care or concern for the child, and the amber alert system seems to work very well at locating the children.

The EU will have to work this one out. What other options would there be? Even German attorney cites the "loopholes"and human rights violations of children!

It seems an example of some very bad, and possibly antiquated, laws that are in need of reform.

Not allowing a child to travel out of Deutschland to Poland to visit relatives is beyond "unacceptable" in my mind.
