Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

Any reasonably priced hotel recommendations for 4 adults and 2 kids?

If you are looking for nothing fancy, try the Savoy Hotel or the Rezydent Hotel. From the Rezydent there is a direct tramline (#9) to the city centre. From the Savoy Hotel you can walk to Rynek in a couple of minutes.

I've slept a couple of times in Dwor Polski, but that's more upmarket. This hotel is right on Rynek, so not a lot of walking there.

I've also heard that the hostel Cinnamon is better than you might expect at first, but I dunno whether you'd want that. They have a 6 person room for 55 PLN per person ... but those are bunkbeds ... :D.

Tell us when you'll be in Wroclaw and we can go out for a beer.

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

Ever check your statements ?

Paying with Maestro in shops and petrol stations is free of charge.

If I take money from an ATM it is 2 euro. So I don't take off 20PLN, but 300 or 400. And I pay as much as possible with the debet card in shops ... as I said, free of charge.

I have a Dutch bank account at ING.

Life / Moving to Poland - Checklist / Things to Consider [33]

Warszawski ... A great thread.

Maybe we can add some information:

* stop subscriptions to (mobile) phone company, internet provider, cable television, etc ...
* ask for quotes from removal companies (if applicable)
* ask for quotes from storage companies (if applicable)
* what about car insurance in case you have a car, and want to take it to PL?
* write down meters of water, gas, electricity companies and inform them
* what about if you wanna take your dog and/or cat, hamster, rabbit, budgy, canary, and other pets to PL.

If some of you know the answer, please post it here.

(One of) my last post(s) from the Netherlands. Tomorrow morning at 04:00 we'll be driving to PL. Got the van packed, the rest of the stuff which I don't need immediately is in storage. The only thing I need to pack is the tele, a couple of sleeping bags and inflatable matrasses and my laptop.

A new fase in my life. I'm sure it'll work out just fine.

Get it before you leave, the exchange rate on, or near the border could be crap.

You can pay with your debet card (Maestro for example) or withdraw money at an ATM in a petrol station. No worries to get PLN's in England or wherever.

Polonia / SHIPPING HOUSE CONTENTS: from Poland to Moscow. Suggest a company? [17]

Wildrover ... I've asked for a quote from some removal companies in PL. As you know I am moving (some of) my stuff as we speak. They all wanted between PLN 5.000-6.000 for a distance of 1.920km. I have about 30m3 of stuff. They would have sent 3 guys in my case. Maybe you might want to calculate the volume of your stuff and rent a van.

For the first three months I will live in my wife's apartment, so I am only taking some of my things (clothes, and some other things that are a little old at my wife's place). I've just rented myself a van (Ford Transit). 6 days for 1.301,01PLN, without km-limit. The van is 9m3 so that's enough for a washing machine, cooker, 15 removal boxes, 2 bikes.

Just to give you some idea about costs. Maybe it is different in your case cause you'll be moving outside of the EU.

Good luck.

Love / Any particular Polish customs or traditions that I should know about in my relationship? [45]

In case when the name has several dates during the year, usually its the next one after the birthday.

A question Bzi ... in the case of Magda, f.e. In May there are about three or four Magda-dates. And three in June as well if memory serves me correctly. I know a Magda who is born in October, yet has her name day coming Wednesday. How would that work in this case? I never got it ... :S

Love / Goal: Meet a nice Polish girl! [62]

With this you are saying that everyone who is not involved in these circles you mention, is a trollop. How nice of you. Talking about generalisations ... :S. Only people with a severely limited intelligence level use generalisations, cause otherwise the world is too difficult for them to understand.

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

Well, for my route there are only three countries involved, aren't there? F, D, and CZ. The bus goes through 4 (F, B, NL, D).

But I guess communication might be a little easier, although you don't have to talk much when filling up your car.

The route the bus takes, is about 75km more, so it's not that bad.

You can also take the Amiens, Namur, Liege, Cologne, Dortmund, Kassel, Leipzig, Dresden, Wroclaw route. F, B and D to travel through and not so much traffic as on the Hannover - Berlin route (1.650km as well).

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

and then drive from calais from about 1am so i get to ustron for 5 or 6pm. i do use a satnav, i go via hannover and berlin as thats what my satnav takes me.

From Calais to Ustron via Berlin? Are you sure? What kind of SatNav do you have? I just calculated it with my TomTom Live 1005 with the latest maps and it shows me the route:

- Amiens
- Reims
- Metz
- Worms
- Heilbronn
- Nurnberg
- Prague
- Brno

In total 1.652km in 14 hours 35 mins.

We are talking about Ustron near Bielsko-Biala, aren't we?

what do you drive there?

It depends on what the rental company gives me. Usually I have a Skoda Octavia 1.6TDI, Kia Cee'd 1.6 CRDI or Hyundai i30 1.6 CRDI.

how long does it normally take you?

My normal route (Geldermalsen - Wroclaw) is 951km. My fastest with only filling up the car and relieving myself (eating and drinking while driving) is 6 hrs 53 mins. That's an average of about 140km/h, which is pretty fast. In that case you use the floor of the car as cruise control. My fastest to Wwa was 9 hrs 52 mins, but that cost me PLN 500 just outside Lodz and another EUR 120 just before Berlin.

My slowest was 17 hours+: 6 hours from NL until the border with Poland, then 11 hours to Wojciechowice (nr. Kłodzko), including having to dig myself out of the snow 5km from "the finish", and my windscreen washer freezing up so having to drive virtually blind. It was on December 27th last year.

Life / How Safe Are the Polish Cities? [179]

Car theft rate in Poland is about the European average and it is lower than in England and Wales, Portugal, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Bulgaria, Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, Iceland, Italy and Norway

Shall I or shall I not :D It's an easy one, isn't it ... ? Nehh, I won't ... :D

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

have you ever driven there Stu?

Only about 16 times. And 6 times to Warsaw, twice to Suwalki, twice to Wisla, twice to Bydgosczc and once to Poznan.

Next Wednesday will be my 17th time. And the Sunday after that the 18th. With a van to take some of my stuff to Wroclaw.

But other than that ... neh ... not really ;)

On Monday I fly. Like I've done about 40 times before. Not counting 12 times to Wwa.

So I guess you could say for someone living in NL, I am a seasoned PL-traveller. And I'd rather fly. No matter which road I take (Hannover - Berlin - Wroclaw or Dortmund - Kassel - Leipzig - Dresden - Wroclaw), I find it boring.

But everyone has his preferences, I am sure.

Love / American marrying Polish woman in Poland - Church problems [79]

Well, according to some Polish customs it is the groom who pays for the vodka, the rings and his suit. The rest is covered by the wife-to-be :D. So why should it bother you? If she doesn't want to pay for it, fine. Then you can say that you didn't object to the church wedding but that she didn't want to pay for it, so hey, it's not your fault ... :D:D.

But I can't see the problem of giving the priest some money. We donated 1.000PLN for the restauration of the church. Big deal ... . And he wants some money for himself as well. Nothing strange.

It's normal that they want some money for their work. They have to write a sermon, etc ... etc ... . Our priest did a damn fine job of it, doing the service in Polish and English. Super! No fuss, no problems, open to requests and suggestions, cracked a couple of jokes, etc ... .

But if you didn't marry in church the first time, then there shouldn't be any problem, now should there?

Unless of course you first told the priest that you had married in church and suddenly retract that statement. Then you shouldn't be surprised if some eyebrows are raised.

It was 17 years ago and I don't remember exact details, is that so hard to believe

I'm afraid it is ... ask anyone here who's ever been married. My first wedding was 14 years ago. And I remember it ... very well.

And divorce takes place in court here

Well, then you've got papers. Have them translated and you'll be fine. I had my divorce papers translated by my consulate. I got a signature and a stamp, handed them to the priest in Wojciechowice and he was happy.

Life / IS Poland in danger of becoming the next multi cultural sink hole? [201]

Look who is talking ...

Hey sh1thead ... I DO have a job. Grubas hasn't. He has stated he rejected work cause being on benefits gives him more money. Hence he has no balls, no pride, no nothing. He just holds up his hand and expects people to give him money for free. I hate those people.

His argument that he pays taxes, is BS. He's just given less money from the government ... well, first they give it to him, then he has to pay it back. Still, they are all handouts.

I have no problems with people who have lost their jobs and are on benefits for that reason. Or for any other reason for that matter. Sh1t happens. It can happen to all of us (unfortunately). But the way it works over here is when you are fit to work, you have to work. If you refuse, your benefits are cut. And rightly so. And if that means you have to do a job for a while that is under your level of studies or skills, then so be it.

See, so you are lying again. In a another thread you told me you have some assets"" in PL and that you would return soon. Obviously you won't.

You can't be trusted, can you?

Ehh, what can one expect from a parasite who doesn't want to work and just holds up his hand?! I guess if there would be a thread on how gypsies do the same thing, he would be all up in arms, how scandalous it is, bla bla bla.

Disgusting.

also the jobs avaliable pay less than my unemployement

Jesus ... don't you have any pride??!! That's the problem with people nowadays: they expect everything comes for free. Disgusting! It's the same mentality some people are criticising in Turks, Maroccans and other immigrants. One shouldn't criticise them, but this revolting mentality.

So in your theory it's perfectly fine for a Polish person to cross the border in search for happiness in Western Europe or elsewhere, but it somehow isn't for Western Europeans or other nationalities to live in your country?

No worries, AJ ... only two more weeks and I will be living over there. I will assimilate her. Resistance is futile ... :D:D. Nanu nanu (or was that someone else ... *wonders* )

News / Poland becomes Europe's breadbasket ( Again ) [3]

I don't want to spoil the party, but the fact that exports have risen, doesn't mean to say that Poland therefore becomes Europe's breadbasket, now does it?

According to our Ministry of Agriculture, Dutch agricultural exports have risen from €60,5bn in 2009 to €65bn in 2010, about 5 times as much as Poland's on a land area of 7,5 times smaller than that of Poland, making it the second largest exporter of agricultural products after the United States.

Germany's exports have risen as well with 7.2% to €33,23bn, about 2,5 times the amount of Poland.

Even Belgium exported €34,1bn (over 2,5 times that of Poland) in 2008 on barely 10% of the landarea of Poland.

So, I'm sorry to say, the figures aren't *that* fantastic. Let's try to keep everything in perspective, shall we?

Life / The rising costs of food and fuel in Poland and the effects on disposable income/economy [177]

milky, you sound like a broken record.

Several posters on PF have shown us unequivocally that there is no property bubble. Now, the fact that other posters don't react, doesn't mean they didn't read the entries and have made up their own mind, having had a look at the links others have provided.

Your insistence that their is a property bubble while others have shown again and again that there isn't, makes you look like someone with a chip on your shoulder at best and a complete idiot at worst.
