Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

The Speed Limit is 130 km/h in Germany and Poland. 120 km/h in Holland. Its true parts of Germany are de-restricted but they are applying speed limits more and more.

There are lots of 120 km/h sections of the A2 towards Berlin. My advice is don't drive faster than 130km/h so you can see the signs for the slower speeds. Most junctions have 100km/h speed limits!!

Don't drive as fast as your car will go, stay at a reasonable speed. There are lots of Police on the A12, the section Berlin to Frankfurt Oder. All the road works are finished so you should have no delays through there, its 120 km/h on this road too.

There are numerous rest stops through Germany and Poland, they are all safe. I've slept in my car numerous times in Germany. Note!! Don't sleep in your car in Belgium, its illegal. By Law you must carry enough funds to be able to pay for a hotel room.

The Poles are building a new Motorway from Frankfurt oder to Poznan. Add about 2 hours to your journey time for this section as its full of road works.

Just drive sensibly and you will be ok, Germany Autobahns can be quite scary if you have never driven them before.

Life / WHEN DO THE CLOCKS GO FORWARD IN POLAND? [19]

3x4 = 12

3x4x5 = 60

3x4x5x6 = 360

360 degrees is a circle.

Sundial is a circle. 360 / 30 = 12

12 hours in day. 12 hours in night. Therefore 24 Hours in a day.

Babylonians used these numbers. No one else saw fit to alter these things.

Law / Why have they built another huge shopping centre in Lodz? [7]

I just went to the opening of Port, the newest shopping centre in Lodz. It was not completed but about 70% of the shops were.

but......

This is the 3rd large shopping centre in Lodz, Manufaktura and Galeria. Most polish people in these places seem to only window shop, why keep building more when the roads and airport are so bad?

Love / How to convince English boyfriend to learn Polish? [39]

I still cant speak Polish or understand people speaking it but I can read and write it a little.

I've been trying and it upsets me that I can't do it, I really want to live in Poland so I must learn soon.

If he can't be bothered to learn a few simple words you should ask him why he can't be bothered.

My girlfriend speaks very good English but I want to speak very good Polish still. I don't NEED to learn, I WANT to for my girlfriend and her family.

History / How was Poland compensated after World War 2 [47]

Wait, so Poland won the war?

Yes, their war finished in 1989.

The Nazi's tried to wipe Poland off the map in 1939, Poland is still here and the Nazi's and the Soviet Union are gone so I guess Poland beat the Nazi's and Soviets too.

History / How was Poland compensated after World War 2 [47]

Reparations and compensation. Why?

The people who caused the war are dead, the Nazi party and the Soviet Union have gone. Why should people pay for what their ancestors did?

Not every German was a Nazi, not every Russian wanted to be communist.

The English want compensation from the French for the Norman Invasion in 1066.

Note, the last statement is not true, its sarcasm.

Work / Average monthly salary in Poland is around 1000 PLN (few hundred bucks). [387]

it stops me from having normal conversation on this forum.

There is nothing wrong with this English.

Blind assumptions? I think below are blind assumptions too.

if I were to guess, I'd say you've been moving for most of your life.

Please stop slagging each other off, this is Polish Forums and not the Fuzzy and Delphi show. You are both as bad as each other.

Median Salary is the best way to judge salary in Poland. I know some who earn a lot, some who earn a little. I earn 1300zl for 2 days while in Poland every weekend im there.

News / Crucifixes to stay in Polish schools [364]

If you are baptised into a Christian religion you are a Christian, you cant be a fake Christian. You don't have to believe in the religion anymore but you are still a Christian unless you renounce it.

I believe in God but not in religion, religion is man made and controlled by man. You can follow what Jesus and the other prophets were supposed to have said without following the religions. Religion just causes problems, having no religion does not cause problems.

The Soviets and Nazi's abolished religion because it was a threat to them. Not having religion did not cause Nazism and Communism to begin.

Anybody who takes offence to any religious symbol is just crazy.

Christian schools should be allowed to have crucifixes displayed but if someone asks for a different religious symbol to be displayed that should be displayed too.

The Bible is not lies its just "Chinese Whispers" The old testament talks about things that are pre written language, before writing everything was passed orally as stories.

Travel / Travelling from NI to Poland [32]

Ive taken the A4 route and A2 i find the A2 quicker and less hassle, i made the trip Southampton UK - Wroclaw PL in just over 13 hours but then again i have a fast car.

I think you missed the time difference here.

I just drove the A2 on Friday and was stuck in a 2 hour 14km traffic Jam before Hanover.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

English on Stag do's abroad are not good examples of the vast majority of English people abroad. They are there to get very drunk because its cheap.

The locals in Krakow should just charge extra for beer when its a group of Drunk English men, ban them from every decent club and the Police should arrest them for being drunk on the street.

This will stop them coming to Krakow and they will go to a different country. Why do you think they moved to Krakow from Prague?

I don't want to be banned from places in Poland because I'm English. I can hold my drink and be polite even when drunk. I'm a Happy drunk.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [417]

I was just saying being a good soldier is a Polish trait.

They are not better than other countries soldiers but they are just as good.

The British Army has the best soldiers in the world but without political backing they are useless. You can still have great soldiers but be a rubbish Army.

History / Yalta Conference and Poland [78]

The Red Army was on a role and at the height of their powers, I don't think the west had a chance and it was good the Red Army stopped on the Elbe river.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [417]

The Polish were known through history as good soldiers. The British Hussar (Queens royal Hussars, Kings Royal Hussars) descend from the Polish Cavalry and there are many links with the Polish Eagle. In Medievil times the Polish had a great Army.

In WW2 the Polish held out for 36 days under an attack from the Nazi's and the soviets.

The French (aided by the BEF) lasted 47 days under an attack from the Nazi's.

Recently the Polish were in Iraq and now are in Afganistan and doing a good job.

I think you can use being a good soldier as a Polish trait if being a good soldier is a British trait.

Travel / Travelling from NI to Poland [32]

I should have been clearer.

Sometimes its awesome. When you drive it every weekend it is not an awesome road.

I was mainly trying to say its A2 to Magdeburg not A2 to Berlin. I drive to Lodz via Wroclaw sometimes to see a friend in Polanica zdroj and its the route I take. Now the A4 motorway is open it will be a better drive.

The A2 is not an awesome road. Wait until some idiot has smashed his car and you are sat still for 9 hours. You hear it on the radio about 25km Stau (Traffic Jam) A2 Dortmund to Hanover quite often.

I have been stuck on the A2 a few times when it has come to a halt.

However, from Rotterdam you head for the A1 at Amersfoort (E30). This takes you to the German border near Rheine an the A30 (E30). Follow the A30 to Bad Oyenhausen, watch out, the A30 ends on the edge of Bad Oyenhausen and there is a 50km/h speed limit, its still 2 lanes. There is a speed camera about 100m after the sign. The other side of Bad Oyenhausen get on the A2 (E30) to Hanover. Stay on the A2 to Magdeburg (Not Berlin) at Magdeburg join the A14 towards Leipzig and Dresden. At Dresden join the A4 to Wroclaw.

Berlin is another 100 mile from Magdeburg and will take you onto the A18 which you dont want.

I drove the A2 last Monday.

History / Yalta Conference and Poland [78]

How about General Patton's plan, which was to keeping pushing with the Allied armies and drive the Reds out of Europe altogether?

And how were the Allies supposed to do this? The Italian Campaign and D Day were just bit parts in WW2. The West just kept the Nazi's busy while Stalin smashed them. There was no way we would have beaten the Red Army.

Even in the 80's NATO would have been smashed.

Hindsight is great.

The Brits and Americans should have trusted Stalin and made a pact before Stalin made the pact with Hitler. In Hindsight, when we hesitated we sealed Poland's fate. It was not foreseen at the time.

By Yalta the Red Army was too powerful and able to dictate what would happen. The UK were Americas Lap Dogs by 1945 and nothing has changed since.

4.They feed you well.
Again the old generation will but the current one doesn't know how to cook generally

5.Polish women are generous.
Again no more or less than anywhere else

6.They don't spend money crazy.
Nonsense. If they have money to spend they will buy clothes and shoes from Zara or whatever boutique is "cool" at the time

I must be very lucky then. My gf feeds me well, she is the most generous person I have ever met and she wont spend money on clothes even when she has money. She will only buy something if she needs it, won't even let me buy her clothes.

Travel / Travelling from NI to Poland [32]

I drove over the border at Zgorzelec in June last year and the Motorway was not open.

In April the A18 was 2 lanes but very bumpy, are they resurfacing the road now?

If the A4 is open and all Motorway now the best crossing would be to Hoek and then follow the E30 until Magdaburg. Just before Magdaburg switch to the A14 towards Leipzig then join the A4 before Dresden.

If its a sunny day it is a very nice drive, going over the Minden Ridge on the A2 is a great view. Watch out speeding in Holland, I've been caught a few times. They have sneaky Camera's on the Motorway and Unmarked cars.

They are known to close motorways and make you drive through the services to check for anything illegal. Every car is stopped by a Policeman when they do this.

Don't do anything illegal and you will be fine, don't worry.

Travel / Travelling from NI to Poland [32]

As I said, the distance is irrelevant.

The speed limits in Holland means you take 6 hours to get to Berlin.

From Esbjerg its 3 hours to Berlin.

I have tried every Ferry to the continent, I like to miss out driving in Holland. There is way too much traffic on Dutch roads.

Personally I think I would rather pay extra on a ferry to drive less.

I would not call it hideously expensive. The Harwich to Hoek overnight ferry is very poor.

Dutch speed camera's and unmarked traffic cops are bad.

The dutch can impound your car and sell it at auction if you cant pay your on the spot speeding fine.

Germany does not have this.

Travel / TRAIN JOURNEY..DRAWSKO TO POZNAN...help needed... [30]

Its not being used by NATO at the moment, I think its being left for a couple of years to recover, let more trees grow and the tracks to get grassed over.

I think thats why the bars are closed.

I'm trying to get a permanent posting there but i think its just a pipe dream.

It would make trips to see my gf easier though :)

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

Many people in Poland are ruled by money, steve

most of the Poles I have met and are my friends are not ruled by it. My ex gf was thats why she is my ex.

Krakow seemed to me a lot like it was a money grabbing haven but all the other cities I have visited are not.

Parking machines give change or give you, say 1 hour 15 mins, in Poland.

In UK they don't and you will only get the hour even if you pay the equivalent of 1.5 hours.

This is one example of why i say people in uk are ruled by money.
