News / A devestating verdict on the Polish church [279]

I'm pretty sure it's called the Roman Catholic Church for reasons that have very little to do with Poland.

why don't you head to Vatican City and tell them to stay out of Poland too?

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

for what it's worth, I was always told that 'Babcia' was a ukranian/polish form of Busia.

Where I come from, the old pollacks frowned upon it's use, because they were very opposed to being identified with ukranians.

I think I may have actually been spat on once even as a kid for using it without knowledge of the above.

News / A devestating verdict on the Polish church [279]

Keep screeming and please tell everbody how many parcels Poznań's Jewish community get quaietly and for free. And please say I'm lier. :-)

Using jewish behavior in Poland as a precedent, we need to get some really good legal representation for the Palestinians and do to the israelis what their people do to others in other countries. Take the land back. Just think, we could end a majority of the fighting in the world today in the process.

As far as the church goes, the RCC is probably the greatest holder of wealth on earth so I really wouldn't spend half a second worrying about them.

Maybe that news site could get a translate widgety.

Life / How do the Polish feel about air pollution in their cities? [35]

I grew up as a steel town kid. Most of my uncles worked for Bethlehem steel, lots of coal dust, the coal ovens.. the slag would light the sky red at night..

I can't think of one uncle that did not die of emphysema. maybe one will come to mind..

just another case of jewish identity theft.

I think jews make up their history as they go along, whatever is convenient today.

Genealogy / Americans of Polish descent. How many of us are on Polish forums? [216]

That's the conclusion I came to also.. both my grandparents on that side of the family spoke very little English.. My grandmother spoke next to zero English, up till the day she died at almost age 95.. my grandfather spoke 5 languages but his English, as I recall, was never real good. I never knew either of them very well, my grandfather died at age 72, I was only 5 or 6 years old.

Probably his sponsor or perhaps even his mother's name.. tracing that side of the family back isn't easy. I have a cousin who is trying to do in depth genealogy, maybe he will find some answers.

That side of the family had a big drinking problem which isn't helpful either.

They did their best anyway.

I have not posted the photos of my grandparents from the more eastern Polish side yet.. maybe later. I have some qualms about it being that there are so many cousins on the net i might get trampled.

History / POLES NOT KEEN ON REPRODUCING? WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GERMANS AND RUSSIANS? [67]

I can answer this.

When a Polish man marries a German woman, the children are suddenly all German, when a Russian man marries a Polish woman the children are suddenly all Russian.

Being that the original Polish genome already carries the other two traits, it caves in easily from pressure on either side..

I have a solution.

More Germans should marry more Russians and then we'd have more Pollacks.

Food / Stuffed cabbage - gołąbki - recipe [59]

honestly.. I don't think so since my daughter experiences the same thing and it was we 2 who agreed and said 'NO MORE PORK!!'

just guessing but my guess is that eating pork requires some adjustment and if you eat lots of it, most likely you've adjusted.

Raccoon probably is a suitable replacement. Both raccoons and pigs seek garbage to eat.

back to our meal.. I like the idea of sauerkraut added in too, I will definitely try that. I have a few jars of kraut in the fridge, been fermenting in there since October of 2009 and it still tastes great. amazing stuff, sauerkraut.

Both pork and chicken are basically almost tasteless on their own - they need to be prepared with spices/seasonings/sauces etc.

My grandfather had a superb polish sausage recipe, mixed pork and beef and all spiced up, it was excellent after being in the smoker for a day. Kielbasa!

Food / Stuffed cabbage - gołąbki - recipe [59]

I can handle a bit of bacon but too much pork always lands me a big zit on my right shoulder and often diarrhea so I like to stay away from it. I used to love spare ribs (pork) as a kid but after several years of not eating pork it was not possible to enjoy the flavor anymore and i have no idea why.. but pork, if you don't eat a lot of it, has a horrid taste compared to beef.

hows that for an answer?

the best 'beef' I've had lately is the Buffalo burger they've been selling at our local supermarket, excellent stuff. Probably because it's grazed instead of raised in a stall eating corn.

Life / Heart attack/stroke - money please! This is public service healthcare in Radom! [7]

She is in intensive care unit with post-MI and post-stroke. And you think cayenne pepper will help???

Absolutely.

Cayenne pepper was your country doctor's cure for exactly this sort of thing for many years.

Won't damage her kidneys either like most prescription drugs will do over time. These days, most doctors are educated by schools that receive grants from the pharmaceutical companies. Thus, they are taught that pharmaceuticals are the way to go and they even get bonuses from big pharma to prescribe their drugs.. They have forgotten what their grandfathers knew

Lots of people die every day from being wrongly medicated or over medicated with pharmaceuticals, be sure you keep an eye on the doctors. My dad even got a nasty staph infection in his bloodstream, sepsis, from dirty hospital equipment, prior to passing away.

Do you have any old pics? Maybe our families knew each other. my family came in through Ellis Island and settled around Buffalo, NY. where did yours go?

Again ... you should visit. When the rest of the world visits ... why not u!

My sister visited a few years ago. she wasn't very impressed.

Say what?Only poor pesants who had nothing in Poland were going to America. You Polams have to accept the fact that your ancestors were the lowest class of society.Really nothing to be proud of.

btw, 'the lowest class of society' has never had the resources to make a leap overseas, not now, not then.

That is why you were left behind.

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

definitely. most of them will suffer either way. the less income a person keeps after taxes the less they have upfront to take care of themselves to begin with. no brainer.. malnutrition is probably the country's biggest problem.

and if they need oxycotin or valium let em get it on the corner for all I care.

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

It's true. Which is exactly why I said I am taking next year off. Take some time to simply focus 100% on myself and my own family.

Of course, I have been working 25-30 years and as I've mentioned, things accumulate over the years, so we are in good shape. If I were 20 and just starting out, it would be a different picture altogether. I am prepared to help the kids.

I have no intention of paying for Obamacare and all of it's tax increases and other requirements for small business. This bill is death to the middle class.

If I am not showing any income they'll have to pay my way.

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

I think the biggest problem today is that people are not as resourceful and creative as our grandparents were before the age of supermarkets and chain stores... and television.

I get offers from credit card companies all the time for zero interest for a year or so.

read the fine print.

They might offer you zero percent but it doesn't mean they are actually going to qualify anyone for 0%. those offers are just come ons.

News / Polish GDP per capita has dropped ! [30]

yea, but these days, debt and borrowed money is added to GDP, so we're not really talking about 'product' and production here. Poland got a big influx of cash from the EU didn't it? that's mostly what you are seeing in those GDP stats.

My grandparents wedding day, 1930. Best man and maid of honor at left, my grandparents on right.

Near zero loans are available at the Fed to 18 specific other private banks.

they have always lended to their friends at very low or 0%, so this is nothing new then.

I thought he meant I could get a zero interest loan.

Well, what the hell, there's no stigma in that.. on the contrary.. where are the Romans that tried to kill us off?

We're quite proud of it.

we ate romans for breakfast.

The ones that escaped went west and are mostly still in England still yearning to control the breadbasket of Europe so be careful.

seriously though, I think a lot of wealth left Poland around 1900. our grandparents that came here, great-grandparents, I think lots of them were running from the socialism/communism that was starting up in central/east europe back then. There was nasty stuff going on. My great-grandparents on my mom's paternal side of the family were killed within a couple years of arriving here, so my grandfather and his sister were taken in by the church as toddlers, orphans. My mom's mom had a huge family, 2 girls, 6 (or 7) boys.. great-granddad was an engineer, all the boys went to college even way back then, became engineers and scientists.. one became a priest.. my dad's side of the family mostly all became steel workers.

I have some really old family photos, they took lots of pictures, a couple photographers in the family too, one on my mom's side, one on my dad's side.
