Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

The food supply in America is tainted with growth hormones and high fructose corn syrup, and these very well could be the main culprits in the American obesity epidemic.

Another crock of BS. I won't bore you with any personal stories or bother to refute this. It's simply not true.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

PennBoy, I watched the video. I differed with you because I thought that you were referring to obese people, not just people who are overweight. Assuming that two out of three Americans are overweight (a figure I don't believe), that could include anybody who's even a few pounds heavier than than their ideal weight up to an 800 pound man. But I'll accept your point.

And it's still about calories burned versus calories taken in that makes people fat. There's no getting around this.

I see quite a lot of overweight people in Poland but vert few who are truly obese, and there's a difference between overweight, fat and obese. Unfortunately, there are far too many people in the US who are fat or obese and it's no wonder that so many of these people have health problems because of it.

That's because if 2/3 going on 3/4 of Americans are overweight

Patently untrue.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

I think you will find that more Poles emigrate to every individual country in the EU than the US in any given year.

Probably true. Could that be attributed to the necessity of getting a visa to go go to the US?

Travel / I'm half-Polish and I'm Planning a Trip to Poland - tickets, historical landmarks? [36]

LOT is fine. At least it was every time I flew with them.

Where should you go? I'm biased because I live in Gdansk, but it's a beautiful city replete with lots of history. So is Warsaw as are many other other cities in Poland. Reading a little Polish history will help you to understand this country and give you a better idea of where you might want to visit.

What should you bring? It'll probably rain a little while you're here, so plan accordingly. Just treat this as you would a trip to any other city or country. A Polish-English dictionary would be good. Ask a bookstore for the Oxford pocket one. And bring a positive attitude. Poland isn't like the US, so when you encounter things that frustrate you you-like long lines and indifferent people in shops-just think of them as part of the experience. It's not the US, which is part of the fun of being here.

While it's true that you'll find English speakers in most major cities, don't count on it. A little Polish will go a long way. Although the title is a joke, Polish in Four Weeks is another good one. Buy it now and spend the rest of your life wrestling with Polish.

If you have any more questions, send me a pm or an email. I'm always happy to help.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

It comes down to caloric intake and fat people don't know when to stop. They also are too lazy to exercise. This is not rocket science.

Amen, brother. You've hit the nail on the head.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

how often you eat

Not really. It's how much you eat no matter when you eat it.

when you eat,

Nope. It's not when. It's how much.

You dont think its a little suspect that US citizens all of a sudden became massive and the English are becoming massive too?

No, I don't. People in the US didn't suddenly become massive. They were like that when I was a kid a very very long time ago. I won't speak to the English because I have no experience with them.

For what it's worth, Australia passed the US last year in the percentage of overweight people per capita. Overweight means a few pounds, stones or kilos, however you choose to measure. Obese is way beyond that, and no matter which country you're talking about you'll find fat and obese people. Guess why.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

But Mc D's and KFC are not the issue in Poland, the issue is the genetically modified food, thats where the fat people get fat IMO.

People gain weight for only one reason. They take in more calories than their bodies can burn. It's simple. It's not about what you eat, although that does play a part in the process. If you eat too much, you'll gain weight. If you eat way too much, you'll get fat.

Now you know why I live here. Last year we had a lot of snow. It's going to almost balmy-at least for winter-while you're here. Tomorrow-Monday-most places will be closed as well. Things will be back to business as usual on Tuesday. Have fun.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

I've rarely seen a USA person to be able to take critism or disinterest in them or their country in a normal manner.

Really? Visit my classroom sometime or meet my other American friends. The US has faults-every country does-and we talk about them freely and openly.

To be free a person must be ready internally, being in USA doesnt give it.

This is pure poppycock. It's not worth discussing.

Another thing...STOP calling yourself "America"

Why? The country is the United States of America, so we call ourselves Americans. We're well aware that there are other countries in North, Central and South America. If they call themselves Canadians or Mexicans, they're also North Americans. The same is true for our brothers and sisters farther to the south.

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

lovelybride:
No, dear child, you need to use the present perfect simple there: the time in the past of this action is unknown and unimportant, only it having happened at some point before now (or not) is important.
What were you saying about spelling? The word 'occurred' has a double r in it.

This is the only point I disagree with. You're right in saying it should the present perfect simple, but I read it as (has it) ever occurred to you that...Sort of a shortcut. I use the same form when speaking or writing to a friend-never in my classroom with students until they've gotten to a higher level and then only when talking about colloquial English.

Work / Moving and working in PL as a teacher (near Zory/Katowice) [53]

Im looking for work or advice, im moving to town called zory outside katowice.

First bit of advice: even though this is an internet forum, pay attention to your grammar, spelling and punctuation, especially since you want to teach English.

Second: do the CELTA, preferably in Poland since you want to live here.

I'm not being negative. Would you write that like on a whiteboard in a room full of your students? There are some other teachers here who will rip you to shreds for that. Tread softly.

Life / Do I have to do something to start receiving mail in Poland? (moved from the US) [33]

FUZZY, it was perfectly clear to me that the package was mailed from the US to Poland. Not to start a pi$$ing contest, but Grubas1 needs to read more closely. I think he should start by learning how to register, but that's just me.

I've only had one problem in Poland with the contents of a letter, not package, I sent not arriving intact and minus the contents, but it convinced me that workers in the Polish postal system have xray eyes and sticky fingers.

Love / Want to ask a Polish girl out? [27]

Why bother to answer someone who isn't registered, can't write well though he claims to be an Irish man, and doesn't know how to ask a girl for a date? He sounds like he's 15.

Harsh?

Welcome to life.

Law / PRICE OF BEER CANS IN SUPERMARKETS IN POLAND [11]

True. That's why my "recycling" consists of leaving the empties next to the rubbish bins (trash cans in American English) near my flat. Guess who picks them up within minutes.

Browar Amber

Cans of Amber Naturalny are 2.5zl in my local sklep monopolwy. Bottles are a little less in the shop next to my flat. 5.7% alcohol, nice taste, easy to drink. I'm in Gdansk.

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

Bydgoszcz

I've been there several times. Nice city, some interesting architecture and lots of green in and around the city. Walking along the Brda is a pretty stroll and there's a rynek.

I just wouldn't want to live there.

Language / 24 hour time telling in Poland vs. other countries [29]

Yes, it's possible, especially if they're idiots. It's easy to figure out and you hear this a lot in movies.

Get the book 301 Polish Verbs. I think verbs are easier than case endings, though in the beginning the prefixes made my crazy. Hmmm. They still do.

Life / Polish water safe to drink? [50]

I drank tap water in Warsaw for six weeks then moved to Gdansk almost 4 1/2 years ago and have continued to do so. No problems. But if my tap water were brown, I'd buy bottled water at Biedronka. The only time I buy bottled water now now is if I want lemon or apple flavored water for an occasional change.

Blondie, where's this slope you have to walk up? Be grateful for the exercise.
