Food / Polish culinary dislikes [83]

I overlooked are pumpkin pi

I love pumpkin pie!!!!!!!!

American apple pie is one of the classics of American cookery

most European cookeries have an apple pie or a version of it.
Apples were always cheap so people baked with what was available.

I still think that Szarlotka is a great version of apple pastry.

I did NOT ask if it is enough for other posters, I asked if the editing time could be extended.

Note to myself:

POLSKA SA£ATKA JARZYNOWA z majoneze on PF (POLISH VEGETABLE SALAD with majo on)
For those who have ever tried, made, tasted, experienced the simple, yet very nourishing and tasty salad know that you either hate it, or love it.

It is a simple recipe (so is setting and running any forum), but the key to success is in the ingredience and the person who prepares the salad, you- the cook, on PF the ADM/Mods.

I like mine chopped in rather large chunks, with some majo/mustard and lots of pepper. My niece likes her finally chopped and she would not eat mine, which is not a problem because there is more left for me.

*20 dkg of potatos (ziemniaki) (common, cheap vegetable with lots of carb - if one eats too much of it, there is a chance of weight gain, indigestion and an overall sluggishness often lasting for days)

*10 dkg of carrots (marchewka) (popular, cheap vegetable, sweet in taste and very good for one's eyesight- definitely a winner, not to mention the brilliant orange colour, which enhances the looks of the dish and the presentation)

*5 dkg of celery (apparently good for the overall stamina, if you know what I mean)

*5 dkg of parsley (pietruszka) (heavy duretic, a tad sweet, but with hardly any taste)

*10 dkg of sour pickles (sour only it its name, because it has so much value, that one would be foolish not to add it to the salad, not to mention the fact the green colour can add to the presentation and provide that slightly tangy taste)

*10 dkg of green peas (zielony groszek) (lovely for the presentation with its bright colour, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside - mniam)

*10 dkg of sour apples (kwasne jablka)-(yes, those are essential to the salad, but don't overdue it please, otherwise you will end up with too much of the sour taste)

*1-2 hard boiled eggs (jajka na twardo)-(lots of protein, enhances texture)

*5 dkg of pickled mashrooms (grzyby marynowane) (I personally don't put those in my salad, but in the spirit of creativity one can)

*¼ l of majo (majonez) - either homemade or store bough
**(the problem with majo is the amount - one cannot add too much or too little, but the salad without majo is like a bicycle without wheels, or a forum without ADM/MODS, majo binds the salad and enhances its taste)

*salt and pepper to taste

*** Some recipes call for pickled herring (Sledz), but I personally don't add Sledz to mine - just never liked it in that combination.

So:
Boil potatoes, carrot, celery, eggs and so on. Chop, chop, chop like crazy. Mix it all up, add the majo/mustard, spices to taste and voila!!!!!!!!

You have one good Polish meal.
If you are drinking alcohol, add more majo since it contains a lot of fat and it is claimed to eliminate some of the unwanted alcohol consumption side -effects.

SMACZNEGO!!!!!

News / What do we think about the plans for parity in Polish politics. [11]

I guess it's like in Orwell's 'Animal Farm', where everyone was equal, but some were more equal than others.

that was the case during the communism, wasn't it?

Parity in parliament and public life won't stop this overnight, but it will slowly change both young women's aspirations and the political culture as a whole.

true. It will take time.

Members of parliament are elected. So, how do you see parity achieved? By a forced vote?

I don't know, how is is achieved in Scandinavian countries? I has been done.

Anyways, PO proposes 30 %/70% vs 50% vs 50%.

Life / Recycling and the barter system in Poland [5]

Just a tip if you want a few quid in Poland, apply for a telephone line:)

what do you mean?

Any more examples?

when I was living in Poland I would put the stuff I wanted to get rid of by the garbage bin with a little note that " this blanket is still good". It was nicely packed and all that. I do it here as well, if the equipment is broken - I leave a note, so the happy bugger does not take it home and have his fuses blown out.

Life / Recycling and the barter system in Poland [5]

The can't run a landline so by law they have to pay me.

OK- I understand now.

In London they are very good at that, people make a living off collecting, tables sofas TVs etc...

well, you might want to know that I just recycled my old phone and tomorrow I am giving some clothes to charity:). Thanks for the suggestion.

News / What do we think about the plans for parity in Polish politics. [11]

Any mechnaical division, if consistently coerced, can achieve parity, but what then?

you call introducing legally enforced parity as "coerced"????or I misinterpreted what you were trying to say.

It will bring into politics women who aren't really cut out for the line of work, without broad vision and a sense of public service.

It may, or it may not. It is hard to say at the moment, but I bet there are as many male politicians who should stay at home instead of offering their services to the country. Are you saying that all male politicians are excellent ones? Or I, again, have misinterpreted what you were trying to convey in your post?

That is true of any artifical leftist utopian schemes,

You call scandinavian democracies UTOPIAN, because those countries have the highest degree of parity not only in the government but in all aspects of life?

be it the point system in PRL, where chidlren of peasnats and workers had it easier getting accepted to university,

That was the case in Poland during the communist time where children of peasants had a chance for education - simple human rights case, although as you suggested: peasants should stay in the fields and woman at home. Or, again, have I misinterpreted what you were trying to convey?

or affrirmative action programmes in the USA which pushed racial minorities through school despite their poor performance.

all of them were performing poorly? Are you saying that ONLY white race can perform. I bet if you belonged to a different race, you would be singing a different song.

I think that your views are rather outdated, but everyone has the right to express their opinions.
SO, back to the topic: I believe that Polish woman deserve the parity since they make up half of the population in Poland.
quote from this site:
Political Empowerment

Women in Poland gained the right to vote and run for office in 1918. Women attained their highest numbers in Sejm (Poland's Parliament) from 1980 to 1985, when they represented 23% of parliamentarians. After the 2005 elections, women's representation dropped. While the number of women parliamentarians remained at a similar level to the previous term's (94), the number of women in the Senate went from 23 to 13, resulting in Poland placing much lower, 49th

(out of 139) in the Inter-Parliamentary Union's worldwide ranking (IPU).

wikigender.org/index.php/Poland

So in 1918 women HAD the power to vote and run for the office, so it has been almost a 100 years since then - that is a LONG time. I would say that achieving parity is the next step to Polish democracy. I might not agree with the legal side of it, but : cel uswieca srodki.

Life / Horribly cold in Krakow at the moment , how do you cope with such temperatures ? [124]

Proper clothing and some secret tea recipes :).

HERBATA Z PRADEM(tea spiked with alcohol) or HERBATA PO GORALSKU (tea spiked with moonshine Highlander style), he, he......but .........alcohol is not a good remedy for low temps in general because it fools the system into feeling warm, while it is cold outside - so pace yourself.

It is easier to stay indoors, but proper clothing and brisk walking might do the trick. Protecting the face with good face cream will help too.

Life / Horribly cold in Krakow at the moment , how do you cope with such temperatures ? [124]

Is that the kind of temperature that if you pee, your pee freezes before it hits the ground?

pee is not all water, so it does not freeze immediately:)

I wear two pairs of tights, two pairs of gloves, two pairs of socks and a warm hat. Oh, and at least two jumpers. It helps but today my nose got frozen and that actually made me think why something like a nose-hat hasn't been invented yet? Or if it has, why then I haven't heard about it?

OMG, that is a lot of layers. Where I live gets pretty cold, but I have only one pair of gloves;)

Is this your way of saying you have alcohol in your pee, alcohol has a low freezing temperature and that you do this on a regular basis so you know the effects? :)

you speak with an air of a pro when it comes to alcohol content in a pee stream LOL

- higher density due to salts it contains and lower point of congelation thereof

that is what I meant:)
