...and the rest I wouldn't consider. I hardly consider western men as it is. It makes finding boyfriends difficult in the US. :p

As for stereotypes... I just ignore them. I'm told lots of things because I'm Polish (supposedly I'm unintelligent despite being an Honor student and a member of the National Honors Society, I have a big nose -which I do, but I'm ok with it-, I'm not white, etc.). People are judgemental; it's human nature. It makes things interesting too.. I love being able to defend myself with solid rebuttals. :)

It's not that we're being called black. Race isn't just black or white to me. My friends believe Slavs in general are their own UNIQUE race. Not black or white. :) Even though I'm freakishly pale... my mother thoroughly enjoys calling me a vampire frequently, lol.

I am one of the palest people you will ever meet, lol. So when he told me I wasn't white, I was just like "Are you smoking something?!" My mother likes to call me a vampire all of the time because of how fair-skinned I am!

Yet some of my friends, despite how pale I am, don't believe the Slavic or Nordic people are white... they believe that they are their own race..?

Not to resurrect an old thread, but I've been told by some of my friends too that I'm not "white" because of my Slavic blood. I live in the Northern US too, so it's not just a southern thing (I was born in the South though lol).

My one friend in particular told me he doesn't consider Slavs or Scandinavians white.. It really doesn't bother me, but I just find it a bit amusing.

Genealogy / Are all Poles blue eyed and blonde? [451]

I have amber/hazel kind of eyes and very dark blonde/light brown hair. I'm more than half Polish... I'm like my dad who has hazel eyes and brown hair & he's 75% Polish. :)

However my sister & I look nothing alike and we have the same parents. She's blonde-haired/blue-eyed.. Methinks she got the German genes in us.

I'm sorry. I just do not like the American culture in general. Most of the American guys I personally know are awful... I'm not saying all are, though. :) I just prefer foreigners.

Why? So if you're flirting with a girl, and you find out she's Polish you will stop? Do you people really view nationality/heritage as such a huge factor in dating?

I do... I only date Russian men. I'd consider any Slav, really, but I prefer Russians. I live in America and would never date another American boy... ick.

Get over myself? I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about. I'm incredibly self-conscious and hate how I look in photos. I just posted a handful to see if anyone had input on my facial structure.

Genealogy / Stanislaw Szczyglinski - Holocaust Victim.. [9]

I found out that a likely ancestor of mine (since my true Polish surname is fairly uncommon) was killed in the Flossenburg Concentration Camp. His name was Stanislaw Szczyglinski. Is there any way to obtain more information on him? All I know is that he arrived on Dec. 11, 1944 and died on Mar. 19, 1945.

I doubt he was Jewish since my family has always been predominantly Catholic, so is it possible he worked for the Polish Underground? I read that around 1500 Poles were sent to this camp for being involved with the whole underground thing. I just wish there was a way to learn more.

I'm very fond of history and genealogy so any websites or input would be very much appreciated. :)

My father co-owns a Polish bakery in New Jersey. It's either in South Amboy or Sayreville (where he grew up). I know there are quite a few polish delis and restaurants around there. Most of my Polish ancestors settled there. :)

Thank you; I found your post quite interesting. :) I really wish I could find out more about my ancestry, but my 100% Polish grandfather passed away when my dad was a young teenager, so I never had the opportunity of meeting him.

To start, I am a "mutt." I'm approximately 60% Polish with the rest being English, Danish, French, German, Sicilian, Irish, and possibly Dutch.

However, according to Ellis Island, one of my ancestors came from "Sluchaj, Russia." I understand that Russia had power over a portion of Poland for quite some time, so I'm wondering if that leads to the possibility of me being Russian via some interbreeding. I'm absolutely fascinated by the Russian culture and by their history (and I only date boys born in Russia, lol), so I'd love to find out if I have some Russian blood.

That is the proper spelling of my last name prior to it being changed in America to Seyglinski.

I apologize for the photos... typical myspace/facebook shots, haha. These were back when I had blonde hair.. I'm a light brunette now.

not sure about australia but in the US many, many poles dropped the ski or changed their names to make them easier in america.. some, you'd never even know were poles..

I know this was from a while back, but I'm not sure how true this is. Most Poles I know (I live in New Jersey, USA) have "ski" at the end of their last name. My surname in America is Seyglinski, but in Poland it was originally Szczygliński. I wish I could find more about it, though.. I've searched quite a bit and it's evidently quite rare.

Heheh, I'm about 60% Polish. :) My dad is 75% and I look very much like him. His dad (my grandpa) was 100% and his mom is 50%. My other grandpa (on my mom's side) is 50% Polish and my grandma on my mom's side has some Polish as well.

However, my ancestry consists of:
Polish
French
Italian (Sicilian)
German
Danish
English
Dutch
Irish (possibly... like 1% lol)

I posted a few months ago, but I dyed my hair to my natural color and I wasn't sure if this changed anyone's opinion of what I look like. I'm always told I don't look American, whatever that means, haha. I'm commonly told I look Eastern European, but I think that's fairly generalized. Also, my hair has lightened a little after being dyed. It's like a light brown.

Genealogy / I'm polish and have a darker complexion - WHY? [78]

I'm about 60% Polish and of average complexion. I get very pale in the winter, but I can get quite tan in the summer (may be the 12.5% Italian in me lol). As for eye color, mine are a very light brown/hazel. My dad has hazel eyes and he's 75% Polish, but has dark hair. His dad was 100% Polish and I think he had hazel eyes and darker hair as well. My natural hair color used to be very light blonde, but it's getting darker as I get older (I'm 17 now). It's now a dark blonde/very light brown.

So I suppose it really does all depend on location.

Thanks. :) I have my mom's big brown eyes! Except mine turn greenish and always have a somewhat green tint to them. I always have wide eyes in pictures, but in real life my eyes are more almond shape than anything. :D I always get the most compliments on my eyes, hahah. It's nice though since I'm so darn self-conscious. My nose is big. >.>

Genealogy / Do Polish people have big noses? [451]

I have a big nose.. atleast I think so. It has a "bump" on it that my dad has as well... and he's 75% Polish. My mom has it too, probably moreso than my dad and she's probably about 30-40% Polish. I really dislike my nose from the side, but from the front I don't mind it. But many people tell me I have a big nose. :( It's one of the things I'm the most self-conscious about. But now I just don't care any more. I'm content with who I am and proud of any Slavic look I have. :D

Erm, some myspace pix.. lol. But hopefully they kind of show my nose (I always have bright lighting in my pix... lots of windows!).

I have a question... I always see a lot of Poles with tiny noses. Does it depend on the area one's family comes from?

It's weird though. I have almost the same face shape as my dad (more elongated) and he's 75% Polish. But he is also 12.5% English & 12.5% Danish, so that probably explains it. Plus, my mom does have that small bit of English in her as well..

I have my mom's large eyes though. :D

But really, thank you for the replies! I've always been curious, especially because everyone tells me something different. I typically always hear either Polish, English, or French... sometimes Russian. Some random kids at my school think I'm Russian just because I'm dating a Russian immigrant. People are odd hahah.
