Language / Do Poles prefer US American or UK English language? [185]

Seems the younger the Poles, the more attractive American English

I don't have much experience with fellow Poles speaking English, and maybe I am judging all the stuff through my personal lens, but from what I can gather, although what is taught in Polish schools is British English (say, Received Pronunciation), most people after a while turn to the American variety (probably because of much greater exposure through various media)

I am not afraid of Russia. Europe is.

Russia will not be able to attack Europe for some good next couple of years - also why would it anyway? to steal cars in Poland and Germany? I'm not saying we in Poland should disband our army (or even reduce it) - we should keep it just in case - AFAIK European politicians want to restart Nordstreams as part of the peace deal with Russia (so it has no interest in going warlike again) - however Trump might not be happy with such a development since he dreams of selling American natural gas to Europe to mitigate the trade deficit the US has with Europe (especially Germany)

Putin: Ты с ума сошел? Я бы предпочла черную мамбу в качестве домашнего питомца!

it strange that Putin talks like a Russian babushka ("ja by predpoczła" indicates female person speaking)

Beloved sister and brother-in-law

I write this couple of words and send you [the photo of] our family [not sure of the following:] only not all of us (???) [the following is clear:] because one daughter is married in the reclaimed lands [clearly this was sent after 1945] .. this other (???) is with her and the little one there is her granddson who is 3. When he [the grandson] wrote the uncle, the uncle sent him some nice clothes.

[the following sentence is probably a plea on behalf of the grandson (or rather in the name of the grandson):] Dear aunt, I, lovely Staś, ask you to send me some shoes your granddaughters don't wear anymore, so I can have shoes for the winter.

Stay in health.

Władysława i Franciszek Domralski(?? - not sure about the surname)

News / Polish coal will be back [141]

Polish cities have district heating schemes
That covers 40%.

district heating systems in Poland ultimately run on coal for the most part - just a remark

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [558]

I have to apologize to people who read some of my input on Canada - I might have misunderstood some things I heard in youtube videos - I said in one of my posts that rent in Toronto trippled or quadrudpled when Trudeau was in power: it isn't true: the figure is like a bit over 50 per cent - the person speaking about Toronto situation probably meant house prices which almost trippled between 2015 and 2022 - however since 2022 house prices were on the decline

was the UK booming in the recent years? since the rent prices rose by 25 per cent in the UK on average in the last 3 years

also in 2023 8 million immigrants lived in Canada as permanent residents who constituted ca 20 per cent of the population

During the Trudeau years income growth was 23%.

yeah, and accumulated inflation was 27 per cent - and for example between 2021 and 2022 groceries got more expesive by about 10 per cent - so in essence the poor paid the price

Trudeau stepped down after 9 long years of hard work.

if it really was "9 long years of hard work" then it probably wasn't work for the good of Canadian citizens - 'cause they seem not to approve of it

I thoruoughly think now it makes no sense talking to you

oh, I'll just make one more comment - if a politician does a good job people keep voting for them and that's it - seems like Canadians don't think Trudeau did a good job

Just a shame he's not more radical

it seems Canadians don't concur looking at how Canadian conservatives are bound to win a landslide vicotry in the elections that will take place sometime this year on a platform of "returning to common sense"

btw after 8 years of PiS in power about a third of the Poplish population declaring willingness to vote would gladly choose PiS again (even at their highest PiS only managed to gain 42 per cent of votes in an election)

Why would someone criticise Canadians,

I haven't criticized Canadians but rather the Canadian government - if you cared to read more then you would know that before Trudeau's recent stepping down, his approval rate was like 16 per cent so it should tell you how Canadians themselves view his legacy (and it was long 9 years)

Your post was vague and makes no difference anyway;

my post was pretty darn obvious seeing the context - or you are just playing dumb to deflect criticism of Canada

News / European News and Poland Thread - part 4 [352]

Tesla's, as good as they are, are far too expensive!

electric vehicles are far too expensive in general - it is not one of my concerns to be honest but for many people the speed with which new EV's lose value after purchase is also a factor (I have seen a real case video where a guy talked how his EV's lost 6000 pounds in value after just 6 months after purchase - it was a small EV that cost him 33 000 pound when purchased brand new) - the petrol car my mom is driving is worth less than 1000 pounds in Pola

and after one year the car was only worth 21000 pounds - it lost more than one third of its value in just a year

Hard to know where you get that from since most of the real estate in Warsaw is owned by and sold to locals.

I meant Canadian cities and newcomers to Canada and not Warsaw - so yeah, like, pay more attention, maybe

Sign of a booming economy

yeah, my ass - more like all those newcomers of the last years settling in the biggest cities - all while Canadian businesses and citizens are getting taxed through the roof - maybe read more, watch more youtube videos and generally live closer to the reality

@pawian

ok, maybe I have misheard what the Canadian conservative leader said in an interview (watch youtube sometimes, pawian) - he might have said half a million which is nearly the official number of immigrant to Canada in 2023 ( statista.com/statistics/443063/number-of-immigrants-in-canada/ )

I also read a lot of reddit - and questions from people who emigrated to Canada in the 80's and 90's as children about the prospects of re-emigrating back to Poland are quite often there

How many migrants or immigrants can we accept considering domestic needs and limited resources?

like for example Canada accepted about 1 million immigrants in a country of 41 million in 2023 - most of the time of "progressive" Trudeau in power they accepted swathes of immigrants mostly from the third world (and it was long 9 years) - the result is home and rent crisis (the price of rent tripple or quadrupled in Toronto), the highest inflation in 40 years - 60 billion dollars of budget deficit in 2024, overtaxing, the near collapse of free Canadian healthcare system, and 1/4 of the population living hand to mouth even though working two jobs to make ends meet - add to that big surge in crime, homelessness and drug abuse

Ukrainians have never been Poles or Russians! They have always been Ukrainians!

it's not completely true - even the name Ukraine is a very late thing (I guess like a 16th century term) - it's not that I support Putin's invasion of Ukraine in any shape or form, though, of course

Travel / About cars, electric and combustion in Poland. [125]

The future is either in hybrids or hydrogen.

I don't know much about hydrogen technologies - but I read that it's not that easy to even build good hydrogen containers since hydrogen causes metal brittleness in the long run - just to focus your attention: hydrogen atom is just a proton an electron - so quite small - it can well penetrate metal crystal lattices

the alternative, hydrogen fuel cells use very rare metals from what I read and I doubt they will catch on unless some technologies using more available materials are discovered

the Chinese are working on sodium-iodine batteries that would make expensive lithium obsolete if the technology is reliable - but to be honest even the lithium batteries technology is not 100 per cent reliable from what I can gather as shown by incidents of EV's spontaneously igniting - as you can imagine having an EV's spontanously igniting in say a underground car-park is not an ideal situation

China is much cleverer and much more dangerous than Russia.

mainly because the Chinese are playing a long game thanks to their form of government - while policies change much more in democratic countries

News / Will Poland help defend Greenland against US Imperialism [333]

The US should work diplomatically on this issue and make their own investments, instead of invading countries.

China is building some big port in Peru from what I have heard - could you tell my why would US build such a port in Peru - they would have not much (nothing?) to gain I presume - while China can gain a lot from more exports to Peru and the area

Edit: it also can gain a lot of diplomatically of course
