News / Poland's aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 26 [1183]

Why is the US so anxious to end the w

think: the other threat i.e. China - they have built up their military especially the navy - they want territories in the South China Sea (because, you know, after all it's calle China Sea) and they want to grab Taiwan - what keeps them from doing it now is the United States - and the US spent a lot of its war materiel on the Ukraine war, the materiel they want to replenish quickly to be ready for potential Taiwan crisis

Genealogy / Czajka name? And Poland questions. [27]

Any idea of this surname being from Czajka?

Chikosky seems like a American rendition of the Russian surname Tchaikovsky or Polish surname Czajkowski which are essentially the same surname (the fromer i.e Russian surname is more probable because Chikosky is a phonetic rendition (not based on graphic form since the graphic form was probably in the cyrillic script) - the surname means: someone from (or connected to) a place called Czajków or Czajkowo, which in turn most probably comes from the word "czajka" which is a name of a bird that was previously very common in Eastern Europe (according to wikipedia it is called peewit in English (Lat. Vanellus vanellus))

surnames ending in -ski (sometimes -cki or -dzki) were previously associated to nobility in Poland but it was never a strict rule (well also nobility adopted surnames much earlier than peasants, in Poland)

I may well be wrong but your great grandfather might have been born in Taganrog (it is the only city in Russia that is called similarly to your version) - Taganrog is a city in southern Russia (not a very big one, mind you) not far from Rostov-on-Don (however it is entirely possible that Tagalog is some small place I have never heard about)

News / AfD politician: Poles are land-stealing n*ggers [189]

PiS rhetorically is anti-German and coins every opportunity it can to appear anti-German to look as the opposite

people here don't understand the simple fact that the whole reparations question was raised by PiS as a crude form of "negotiating" with Germany (so with the EU center) to **** off and stop fighting their rule in Poland - I was and still am of opinion that it was not a good "negotiating" method and they never gave it any deeper thought - in the meantime the issue became a talking point in Poland and PiS cannot easily back out from it even if they wanted to - the thing is though that they kind of discovered that the question of reparations is a factor that sets them appart as patriots as opposed to Tusk administration (because the case grew that much)

however what most people here probably don't realize is that Polish right wing parties are at odds with Germany not because of the reparations issue for the most part but because of the current policies of the EU (mostly dictated by Germany) that rightwingers in Poland fear can be highly detrimental to the Polish economy

Poland has been caught red-handed conspiring with Ukraine to destroy Nord Stream

They were mined, but not anymore - the mine was closed in the 80's or 90's,

it was not opals that were mined in Szklary, but nickel ores - from what I read recently a Canadian company is interested in restarting the mining of nickel ores there

Immigration and migration are pure evil. Nobody needs either...

Rich, you sort of live in a glasshouse, so careful with those stones :P

he truth is, they just want their own stuff because they think it's better,

I'm not in their heads, so I cannot either confirm or deny your suspicions

power to take the absolute p*ss by expecting your own brands of black pepper and energy drink in Tesco

man, have you heard of any Polish lobby groups in the parliament calling for Polish products in every supermarket? have you heard of manifestations in the streets of London, Bristol or Edinburgh for the very cause? the simple cause is that some Polish people in England haven't learned the language enough to find what they are looking for in English shops (some Polish immigrants brought they elderly parents/grandparents to the UK)- it's not about demanding, it's about business

Well, almost a quarter of a century later and there is still no support for anyone foreign in Poland.

English is a strange beast - it has a magically lenient learning curve at the start but because of its rich vocabulary and various modes of formality only dedicated learners reach the level that is acceptable for legal purposes that can be used in OFFICIAL legal environments - combine it with the fact that Polish public workers are not paid very well and you get the result of not enough bright people with good English working for the good of foreign nationals in Poland (I probably have made a ton of mistakes in what I have just written so you probably have guessed now that I don't aspire to be a public worker dealing with foreingers)

Meanwhile, in the UK, you can get Polish ketchup brands in any supermarket

you know what free market and business is? you seem not to

as for the presence of Poles in the UK: well businesses needed cheap labour - blame the businesses and the government - afaik many Poles who are still in Britain consider leaving it because of stagnating wages, rising cost of living, rising crime etc

language support in public services, etc - and unlike you Yanks (yeah, said it again)

I first went to England in 2002, illegally - I worked there illegally - there was no such thing as support in Polish for me (or any other Pole for that matter)

vindictive sh*thead,

what do you mean by vindictive? are Poles in Britain somehow taking revenge on the Brits?

Poles have an inbuilt sense of smug superiority and I think it comes from your hardcore Catholicism

Polish sense of superiority comes from various sources - one of the more important ones is the deep Polish sense of inferiority

Edit: btw you said you were never going to come back to this forum a day or two ago :)

Would Poles tolerate this from Ukrainians, for instance? Would they f*ck.

you are just sensitive to criticism - and strangely not criticism towards yourself personally - I would not give a **** if someone said Polish cuisine is inferior in every aspect - I like what I like and cook what I cook

Life / Poland is horrible and I have to live here - somebody call a whambulance! [95]

The surgery was done within a couple of weeks and there was no charge for it, only for one night in the hospital..

this is even more pronounced in Poland (to the extent that you cannot get to hospital with a serious health issue, unless you first privately consult the doctor who works in the hospital, so I heard)

Curious, no?

you have been reminded of that kettle pot thing on a couple of occasions here, already, that's one - two: who are you to criticize people's tastes: some kind of a higher being from the enlighted spheres? - three: you forgot to add black pepper, bay leaves, piment and marjory to the list of the absolute spice must haves of every Polish housewife
