Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

Racial slurs IMO are just a bit more harsh.

Yeah, but then the religious ones start the wars.

Well, more like she lives in Poland and never heard it used in a derogatory manner.

Ah, that would explain it :]

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

I say it in front of my girlfriend and she doesn't even care

Because she knows you. She knows you mean no harm by it.

Poles don't like being called Polaks by anyone but Poles, and it usually has to be said in Polish.

Black guys don't want white people to call them n*gg*rs, but they call each other n*gg*rs all the time.

The only difference I see is the fact that one deals with race and the other deals with a derogatory term used by some as an insult.

I'd like to know when Polak became an insult anyway. Did people forget what it even means. All Polak means is "person hailing from Poland"

It all depends on the context I guess.

That too, but would you like some random guy you don't know calling you a Polak? It also depends on what kind of person you are, too, passive or aggressive.

I'm sorry for my ignorance but i really don't know how the Polish view the word 'Polak' is it a derogatory term used for 'Polish' or just the American equivalent.

Think of it this way:

A black guy wouldn't want you calling him a n*gg*r unless you, yourself are black.

It's kinda the same with Polak and Polish people. You'll hear us calling each other Polaks a few times (in Polish), but if you aren't one you shouldn't be saying it, especially in English.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

"kick the ball with all your might", where others might be hurt?

Gym class has horrible rules. We are the last school that allows dodgeball. Everyone complains about scrapes and bruises.

YOU"RE NOT FORCED TO FUKING PLAY!!! SIT ON THE BLEACHERS AND WATCH YOU BIG FAT PUSSIES!!!!!

My friends and I laugh at each other's bloody noses and cuts that need stitches. Thes kids cry about bruises.

Word of advice to all future parents. MAKE YOUR KID PLAY A SPORT!!! Find a sport they like so they don't get soft like tomato :)

Well you're lucky with your other half. My congratulations. My other half who is also Polish is a nightmare. Like many Polish women she's a total control freak. She puts her nose into all our mutual business... She MUST control anything connected with the flat, holidays, even my friends. Yet she freaks out if I start advising her what to do.

And you're still with her..........shows lots of intelligence there. You have the audacity to complain about her online, yet you won't stand up for yourself to her face. pathetic.

History / Poland's January Uprisings of 1863 [86]

Germany did the right thing

Germany was controlled by the US and England, and was forced to apologize. Russia on the other hand, didn't have anybody playing puppetmaster so they did what they wanted. It was the communist government that made the Russian people look like monsters.

dont you think so artur?

Yes I believe we all deserve a heart-felt apology, but you have to udnerstand, that they can say what they want and not even mean it. People lie, and the Russian gov. is notorious for it.

its still very real to those who went through it

Trust me, my family knows WW2 better than most, and I know how you feel, but you can't honestly hold something against a people who's fathers commited the crimes, not they. I really know what you feel like Patrycja, trust me :)

oh yes alot of them still are around, they are very old, but they remember.

I meant the people that do most of the working today. The veterans of WW2 are all senior citizens :)

something they cant forget till they die.

They'll even remember it after then, but that doesn't mean we can't get along with Russians :)

Well you have to think about this......war changes people. They get angrier, and take out their anger in ways that would make even Satan cry. We can't really hold today's governments accountable for past actions. Today's average Russian was not alive to commit attrocities in Poland, or vice versa. People should learn to forgive, have a big BBQ of kielbasa, and drink some vodka :)

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Zadora is Polish

Zadora - is a Polish Coat of Arms. It was used by several szlachta families in the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Hey....that's one of the the things I used to make my own coat of arms!! :)

Changed the lion head and made it look more wolf like, took away the crown, and replaced that metal thing with the breast part of a suit of armor. Flipped it around too. :)
