Love / Polish men are complete doormats (especially after they get married) [125]

Girls, are you brought up in this country expecting men to be like this?
Men get some balls and stand up to her. Try it once, she might even like it.

not in this house, welsh fella, my wife likes it when i spank her hard, sometimes she misbehaving just to feel my open palm on her firm bum. she is Polish by the way.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [425]

What are common Polish character traits?

inability to queue correctly and terrible driving manners while on the road. also a strange tendency to look at fellow Poles critically while abroad (Poles will not walk up to other Poles while on vacation, just sit back and watch what the others are doing in case they o something funny or worthy of critisism)...strange!!

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

we're still slim, especially the part of the society of 15-35 year-olds.

I see quite a future in fat-camps though

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

If they were to immediately ban advertising to children (as Sweden) it might not yet be too late. But I fear it is.

sweden has a mature enough citizenry and political system where they can get away with banning ads for kids. In Poland they can't even get around to banning the giant billboards that block sunlight in people's flats (the problem gets press here but the politicians still refuse to do anything about it). Poland is too susceptible to payola. Too bad.

Second Poland does not have cheap food unlike in America where they want to make you eat as much as possible to make you buy the most food you can eat.

this is not entirely correct, there is no shortage of cheap junk food in Poland. But because many Poles cant afford cars they are forced to run after buses and trams (they often do not wait for you even if they see you running for the door) they burn off excess calories. Also there are many flats on second, tthird, and even fourth floors with no elevator service so many Poles have a daily stair-master workout.

But in Poland you will not generally witness the double-decker size obese beings that graze in America.

true. the girls are definitely slimmer, and often very shapely. the men often develop a beer gut quite early though, as well as that tell-tale pork fat that comes from eating too much swine.

News / Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport to close in September [27]

Do you understand that Poland suffered 50 years under communist rule?

Same with Czech and Hungary, but they have highways and generally much better infrastructure. That same old "but you dont understand, it was the communists" excuse is starting not to wash.

what do you expect, its Poland. when has this place ever been synonymous with sound planning? If its efficiency you want, go to Switzerland or Japan.

On a similar note, just wait till the months before Euro 2012. Mayhem and hilarity will ensue.

the population is definitely getting chubbier-you can see it in the coming crop of kids. but on average nowhere near the waistline tragedy that is the US (especially rural and southern regions).

Life / Any good Polish films to watch? [112]

KatyƄ is a great film...

Katyn is quite good as is General Nil, a relatively recent release...stay away from the recent Polish romantic comedies, even with what Poles consider to be a good cast they are pathetic and stick to the same pretentious and silly formula (Tylko Mnie Kochaj, etc)

Polonia / POLES vs BULGARIANS [160]

He says that Poland isn't very democratic, that Eastern Europeans are all the same and that Poland will never be an economic power in Europe. The optimist that I am, we argue over this because I despise how he assumes to "know" everything about Poland. In fact he comes off insulting. I keep on telling this dum'b ox that Poland is not Bulgaria.

1) He should talk, Bulgaria is a corrupt mafia snakepit with the worst corruption in Europe, or so the rankings say.

2) Eastern Europeans are not all the same. Your dipsh[t roommate is wrong.

3) He's right, Poland will probably never be an economic power per se.

4) We doubt he knows EVERYTHING about Poland. Nobody does.

5) You are right, Poland is not Bulgaria

Work / Teaching English in Zakopane, is it safe? [53]

I've seen and heard this for myself - classes of well educated people telling me that they wouldn't want a black teacher, and even among my friends, I've heard such similar attitudes. It's not racism as such

LOL how is this not racism?

because Zakopane is such a lucrative spot for business activities, the mafia representation is a little higher than the typical Polish city. However, as an English teacher that uses common sense and leeps his nose clean, you should be safe. You won't be the only person of color that has passed through, but you may get some goofy stares from locals just the same. Zakopane has a definite small-town feel.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

I lovePoland because of its uniqueness.

Every counry is unique to some degree, my dear sir. And Hungary or Albania, for example, are arguably more unique than Poland. Hungarians speak a strange language and Albanians shake their heads diagonally when they want to emphasise the negative.

today its 1) the nonstop rain and grayness 2) the dog poop which is EVERYWHERE 3) the tendency to leave bags of rubbish two steps away from the dumpsters when all it would have taken is the two extra steps and a raising of one arm to actually put it in the dumpster, faaaaaaaaaaaaaacken people here...

Real Estate / Neighbourhoods in Warsaw - how safe? [23]

Warsaw is about as safe as any typical American city..well, maybe a bit safer, but in general the same "wrong place at the wrong time" rule can always apply. Most Polish big city crime seems to revolve around break ins, theft from cars, and drunken brawling. Muggings are rare and if they happen they tend to involve junior high schoolers and retirees (the folks who are least likely to defend themselves). In general Mokotow is safe, and embassy neighbourhoods are usually well patrolled.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

Polak, kike, Yank, wop, its all the same. Depends on the context, intentions of the speaker, whatever. If someone uses the term endearingly its no big deal. If there's spite in the voice then you know what the person is all about.

USA, Canada / To move back to Poland from the USA or not to move back....that is the question [119]

However, the thought of living the "American-dream" for the next 50 years is horrendous to say the least.

Which means you will have to put up with the "Polish dream" in its Warsaw incarnation, which is probably where you will end up as a lawyer from the US.

Rude people, dog-eat-dog mentality, ugly architecture (ameliorated by summer foliage, but just a bit), cranky people, no place to park your car (though hopefully you will be earning the big bucks and may have your own private spot at home), depressing weather (Poland is prone to low pressure systems which produce cloudy drizzly weather), lame health care, the list goes on.

Granted, there are things to like here to, but all is not rosy and I assure you visiting "the homeland" every summer and living here are two different sports.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

It means "You f&cking Pole," which is just like saying "You f&cking Yank" in some contexts. but heres an interesting line from our friends at Wikipedia:

In early 20th century, some ethnic slurs were popularized to describe Polish people in the U.S., such as "Polacks" or the term "white niggers" - used by the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants (WASPs) due to the fact that Polish-American men were marrying African-American women regardless of their race,[54] but most notably, it was the spread of Polack (or Polish) jokes.

Work / Are there any Americans teachers left in Poland? [38]

Warsaw can cut the love for Poland clean out of a person.

totally. Anyway, there are less now for two reasons, but the main one is that the dollar isnt what it used to be (and many teachers would take what little savings they had here and live the high life) plus wages for teaching used to be really good. Now, prices have risen noticeably but wages haven't gone up to keep up with prices.

The other reason is the EU, much easier for Brits to come over so there are more of them proportionately. For Americans it often isn't worth the red tape. I used to know teachers from the US that would come over on tourist visas and teach and no one would care, now the border patrol has wisened up.

None of the above are exclusively Polish traits.

heres an interesting polish trait for you all to discuss: an unusual number of Poles do not seem to look where they are going. on the streets the pedestrians lollygag and walk around wiht their heads in the clouds and they bump into you nonstop, and driving...dont even get me started, like overgrown children in bumpercars hHAAHA

If a Polish woman likes you, you WILL know about it, because they won't leave you alone.

unless they just want something from you, then they wont leave you alone either (English lessons, borrow your laptop, proofread their CV, etc) LOL

strange Polish fashions:

men: those thin cotton vests with pockets, leather satchels that really do look like man-purses, tight shirts, funny eyeglasses (ampngst those trying real hard to be swank).

women: whats with that purple hair dye?
