News / Does Poland support the idea of Slavic unity? [129]

(Btw Bismarck had a wonderful idea about the balkans...build a wall around it and forget it)

He was wrong. He haven't had a chance to meet Crowie. He would have realized then that no wall, no memory loss would be of help :)

News / Polish vodka as a mean of protest [6]

Hugh Laurie asked to boycott the Olympic games in Russia by not buying its produce due to, among others, outrageous laws concerning LGBT community. In case of the substitution for the strong alcoholic drink he suggested to buy Polish:

Yes, alright, Russian vodka is ok if you need to clean the oven. For drinking, it must henceforth be Polish.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

I agree with Palivec on the issue of Bamiyan buddhas and any other monument which belongs to humanity, not just to people of one country. Besides, I doubt that the Afghanis wanted the destruction of these relics. It is an example of utmost stupidity. Interesting that they were older than Islam itself. There are things which are above history and nations - they should be preserved for us and the future.

Language / Which language is easier for Poles? [43]

You're thinking in English, Nathan.

Actually, this is Ukrainian thinking ;) We have sounds similar to L and V, but not £, which for me (I am not a linguist) is a mixture of two or even better to English W.

Nathan, do you pronounce £ as L?

I try to pronounce it correctly, but it sounds a bit funny to me, as if I am not able to pronounce "L".

She kept saying ladny instead of ładny

You know, Seanus, when I read this, I realized that is exactly how I say it :)

Oh, wait, did I say sweet? I meant the most attrocious.

Interesting :) I couldn't ever understand why in Polish one uses £ if there is W. For instance:
£opata sounds like Wopata. You either have L or W - why mix their sounds up? ;)

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

I think it was Tyskie that I tried. And it was great. Though, usually I worship Lvivske beer "1715". But Eastern European beers in general are really good. Czech Pilsner and Slovak Golden Pheasant are to die for too :)

History / Why is the Battle of Grunwald celebrated more than the Battle of Lubiszewo? [29]

Conquer, enslave, exterminate which they did

In 1230, following the Golden Bull of Rimini, Grand Master Hermann von Salza and Duke Konrad I of Masovia launched the Prussian Crusade, a joint invasion of Prussia intended to Christianise the Baltic Old Prussians.

Was the duke Konrad a Teuton?

RP did not exterminate Ukraine

It never could, but it ruined with its "Christenizing" brutalities the cultures of the Baltic tribes.

barbaric wasteland

It is how I see your brain sometimes. I just want to add nuclear to it.

If there was no Grunwald the Teutons would eventually conquer Lithuania, besiege Poland from three sides and destroy it, then they would have another go at Novgorod, this time with and an army ten or twenty times larger and do what they always did, burn the city and kill off all its inhabitants (they did it to Poles in Gdańsk and in many other cities), then they would do the sam to Kiev and then to Moscow.

It is funny, but instead of them that what exacly happened after Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth won the battle. Sokrates, it doesn't matter what language you speak, if one is a religious fanatic with brutal mindset the consequences for the region would be the same. And they were. There was the siege of Kyiv, Moscow, destruction of the Lithuanian ancient culture, burning of cities and extermination of people, latinization of the "barbaric wastelands" as a diligent Polish student of history like you would call it.

IF you read a bit of history of Poland

I read history as a whole written by as much as possible non-interested in the outcome people. You do the opposite and your knowledge is highly skewed and boring by presenting the same one-sided approach.

Love / What is considered "dating" in Poland? [15]

You have to provide more details if you really count on some substantial advice.

It is not personal, it is just a desire to understand the "rules". But thanks so much for your input, jyjkhfa

In all social interactions misunderstandings occur from time to time.

That's true.

Genealogy / Information on last name Geras [12]

they arrived the name was shortened from "Gerasimenko"

-ko and -enko are the typical Ukrainian last names endings like in: Klitschko, Shevchenko, Voronenko etc. The fact that you said they arrived from the oblast close to the Ukrainian-Belorus border supports the hypothesis. Do you know what oblast?

History / Why is the Battle of Grunwald celebrated more than the Battle of Lubiszewo? [29]

so indeed Poland saved everything east of its border from the medieval version of the Nazis.

And what were the intentions of the Teutons? In what way RP was better than them? Both were religious fanatics anyhow and for their pseudo-Christianity erazed ancient cultures in the Eastern regions just like the Conquistadors in the South America. If there was no Grunwald and the two just kept pissing each other off, we might have enjoyed the spots of the preserved antiquity today. I think this was one of the worst sides of Christianity, if it can be called as such.

Love / What is considered "dating" in Poland? [15]

You can pretend you haven't noticed.

But by keeping silent one gets the other person more and more involved because then there is always a hope.

Love / What is considered "dating" in Poland? [15]

Maybe it takes some time before the persons can "feel in the air" whether it's dating or just "meeting".

The problem is you sense that for the other person it is more than it is for you and you feel that the outcome will be painful for both. But I guess it is a part of normal social interactions.

Love / What is considered "dating" in Poland? [15]

But you will probably never find 1 universal definition of dating.

Hm, interesting. That's probably why I couldn't capture its meaning. But this inclarity creates misunderstanding sometimes. But would there be a subtle way to present your position without hurting or don't look stupid acting on simply one's own mistaken presumption of the other person's intentions?

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

I don't know what was its name, but it is quite expensive and the bottle shaped in a pear or drop-like form. It was really smooth. It almost felt like water. Really nice. With a raspberry to chew on. Yummy

Love / What is considered "dating" in Poland? [15]

What is considered a dating? Is this an outing with a woman/man, no matter of what character? Is this a restaurant scene or an ice cream purchase? Is it falling in love, holding hands or kissing that makes a date a date? Because you may go out with a friend, so is this a date too? These may seem as crazy questions, but I am asking them with full honesty of having no idea of what that word exactly means. How one distinguishes? By intentions of the parties involved? But oftentimes you have no idea the intention of the other side. How is it defined in Poland?

Food / What's your favorite Polish coffee? [73]

Either Maxwell House or, sometimes, Nescafe.

Polonius was asking about coffee, not black junk suspended in water. Don't dare to offend coffee by calling it by these hideous names, Wroclaw.

History / Defying Germaniztion in 1901 Polish boy writes 'German girls are ugly' [128]

Your diagnosis foolishly dismisses his patriotic feelings as a Pole in German occupied Poland.

Neither you, nor I know about him and his feelings. There is nothing 100% in this world. I didn't say he hadn't felt some patriotic thoughts or cared about his country. But the way he expressed himself, IMHO, showed what hurt him the most at that time.

Kids are shallow and look at looks alone most of the time

I always thought that is what adults are after. Plastic operations are done well after 14.

Is that your diagnosis?

Yes, it is my diagnosis, in a way. He suffered a blow on a love field and made that single step which separated love from hatred.

News / EU tribunal overrules Polish name contest in Lithuania [150]

Even though I remember

You don't remember the facts, you remember boring stories fed by your surroundings, but hey - it is your business. Whatever you said is really ridiculous and I have no intention to expand on that.

The only thing I might add is that like you cannot let go of your fables about UPA, so the Lithuanians will not forget what Poland did to them 70 years ago. Until you do your part, it is preposterous to expect others to do the same in regards to you. But this is a feature that I find in your mentality: be saint at all cost while blaiming the others. I wonder how Hyper-Catholicity of yours deals with that. Or is it still as empty as it always was in regards to intelligence (to clarify myself, I meant Jan Gus, Galileo, Wycliff etc.)
