Bingo :) The riddle refers to his alcohol abuse, while as you say, he was killed at/near that spot. The first statue was built 10 years after his death, while they replaced it with a new one 15 years afterwards. It was torn down in 2018.

The photo itself was taken from the car park where his statue stood in Baligród.

I actually like this way of doing things. It's much, much more straightforward - if someone tries to go back on their word, it's much easier to say 'Look, it's in writing', at which point, they tend to back down quickly. I also really like the way that illegal contract terms can simply be ignored.

IMO, it's a huge red flag in Poland if someone wants to work on the basis of an unwritten agreement.

In language, yes, but I notice that in other aspects, Poles are really similar to Brits in the way that they can't really give you a straight answer to money-related topics.

But I mean, this can also be to your advantage. I remember being asked to work overtime on a Sunday once, and after a simple "and it will be paid in next month's salary, right?", the topic was instantly dropped. Works for me ;)

They don't want that. It's exactly the opposite of what 500+ is intended to achieve - a class of people with meagre means who will do absolutely everything to defend their social welfare benefits, even at the cost of freedom.

They certainly have virtues and positive aspects of their character, but as soon as money's involved, forget about anything other than ruthlessness.

Even this can be positive, depending on the situation though. I quite like the fact that in Poland, no-one is going to bat an eyelid if you stick to the letter of your contract.

The moment that got me was walking around Jablunkov/Jabłonków and realising that Polish was actually widely used there.


Similar in name to a well known element, this building is home to an international academic partnership.


I'm sleepy so I have no brains for this clue, but I'll try and do more in that style :D I like the idea of trying to make the clues poetic while giving statistics - I think it's a fun way of doing it!

Yup, you and Miło were both right :) It used to be one village before 1920, then it was divided between Poland and Czechoslovakia.

Paulina - I chose this for a reason, because I found it fascinating that there were a majority of Protestants in a Polish-speaking village before WW1. I really like Zaolzie in general, so I thought it would make an interesting riddle! It's not clear what happened to the Protestant majority there - only a small part of the village ended up in Czechoslovakia as Horní Líštná, but if anyone can find out more, I'd love to know!

I read something recently about this, about how there's a growing tendency in Poland to ignore Polish treatment and to believe in miracle cures instead, which aren't proven. Italy and Switzerland are quite bad for offering such unproven treatments, apparently.

Yup, very much divided. It's not Zgorzelec/Görlitz, though, it's much smaller and far less known. Population wise, in 1910, 99% at least were native Polish speakers. At the same time, between 60-70% were Protestants, 30-40% were Catholics and there were a handful of Jews.

What's quite fascinating is that there's hysteria against Halloween, but then the same people go dabbling with the occult at Andrzejki or they drown poor Marzanna.

In general, I'd say this is Poland's biggest flaw - the lack of variety in produce. I still cannot understand why they don't differentiate between potato varieties.

One of the better ones. Lower Silesia is a total disaster in comparison.

Anyway, the biggest issue for you is the legal work - to explain, the 90 day Schengen visa waiver allows you to do business, but not to work here. For that reason, you might be forced into being a contractor - you'll be in the non-EU queue for residence permits, so you'll have to wait at least 2-3 months to get it. Until you get it, you can't work - even remotely.
