Love / Incels in Poland [299]

How long before something bad happens here?

It's a matter of time. There's already examples of violence in schools from such people, and given the frustration that such 'males' have, it's only a matter of time before there's a similar attack here.

It doesn't help that certain circles are promoting access to weapons.

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

How many Jews were in the army on September 1?

How many minorities were in the army full stop, and why weren't they particularly keen on it?

Numbers never tell the full story by themselves, as any accountant should tell you.

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

That's entirely their point. They're trying to create a whole new version of Polish history that they are the guardians of, as they have created and dominated that particular narrative. It's the same thing as the PZPR did in the 1950's, even down to the propaganda of the Piasts.

If Ironside was around in the PRL, why on earth would he support any kind of censorship?

News / Poland - Germany's 5th largest trade partner [27]

and they are not doing horribly bad at that

Good news, it means we can look forward to the Polish Willy Brandt to emerge as a natural reaction to it ;)

Polish industrial output in December 2020 was 11.2% higher that in December 2019

It's very much my view that Covid-19 is simply accelerating the move of industrial production from Western Europe to the CEE region, nothing more.

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

Those who disagree should censor their words or they gonna be shunned and called names, even if they have done nothing wrong..

Uh, Ironside, that's exactly what the PRL did to people.

News / Poland Sports News [1079]

plenty of Polish riders have come to ride for British clubs in the past.

Usually vice versa these days. I was reading only recently how British clubs struggle because Polish teams can afford to pay riders much more these days.

even imagining Poland capable of such sinister governance

Well, Polish history should tell you that Poland is more than capable of it. Remember that democracy is a very new concept in Poland - even Piłsudski had no problem with tramping all over it when it suited his agenda.

The danger in Poland right now is in assuming that democracy is as strong here as it is in the UK or the Nordic states.

History / Poland's borders throughout history [25]

Some close to the original, some less so.

Yes, Słubice is a particular example. They had to go back hundreds of years to find a possible Slavic name which could be Polonised.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

it's a serving container....

Now that's an interesting idea. A very tasty container nonetheless!

Apparently Dealz is now cutting back on the British products because of Brexit, so they'll either increase the price or simply not stock them anymore if they can't be sourced in the EU.

Thought about bad meat

You're right, you're definitely not thinking like everyone else :P

I thought you might have tried to track down the source of that horse meat scandal a few years ago, but nope :( The next one will be much more difficult, I promise!

Go away! It's not easy at all and you've just guessed it first time :D

How did you do this one?

Once a teacher, always a teacher :))

Guilty as charged! I have to admit - part of me wishes that I was a history teacher instead. I do some elements of it, but it would be great to discuss all sorts of fascinating things about Polish history with kids.

As for this new riddle:

I wouldn't recommend going to the butcher shop here.

I'm taking my hat off to you, that was an absolutely brilliant connection to make :D I mean, you did exactly what you were supposed to do (see 'the end of the world' and guess that there might be a place called that) - but still, bah ;) Pawian would be most disappointed!

but also educational

I'm trying to do exactly that - there's so much interesting Polish history and culture beyond the mass media stuff, and I think it deserves some promotion :)

Is the song ' It's the end of the world as we know it'?

It is :D It's not the one up north - but you've more or less solved the riddle, so point to you ;) The one I was using is this one - goo.gl/maps/TjoqTHuAhWyAP9n29 - on the edge of Wielkopolska.

How on earth did you make that connection? :D I was certain that it was unsolvable with just that first clue!

Hmm, no idea... Was is the song "Radio Free Europe"?

Nope. :)

I'll let Chemikiem have a crack at this one first before giving another clue.

Although...This place stands on the edge of a Greater place.

News / Previous Poland's government corrupting the media. [125]

Well it seems PiS partner is not willing to cooperate

I think Gowin knows now that he can count on the people behind him, and that there's very little Kaczyński can do about it. Any attempt to interfere with them or threaten them and Gowin can take down the government.

I wouldn't be terribly shocked if we see a technocratic government with the quiet agreement that Gowin will have control of TVP/Polskie Radio for an upcoming election campaign.

Life / Pączki Day--do Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme count? [39]

A quick look online suggests that the last one vanished from Warsaw in 2018 because the franchisee couldn't make money on it.

It's a tough sell. People in corpo offices would never take a box of them to work, unlike in other countries. I suspect the ridiculous sweetness is also offputting for Polish tastes, yet it probably goes down incredibly well in the Arab world.

Subway is also struggling badly right now.

Study / School meals in Poland [145]

Send me an e-mail with as much details as possible (preferably with the names of the dentists in question - it'll be useful to refer to their advice) and I'll write you a very strongly worded letter that says "either stop it, or this is going further". ;)

To be honest, if the teachers are being twats about it, the only thing to do is to go in hard. If the headteacher requests a meeting, she should also make a very clear point that there should be an independent person there (preferably one of the school governors) to take the minutes of the meeting so that the school can't backtrack later.

thank the EU CO2 quotas for that

Oh really?

Nothing to do with this, of course: bankier.pl/wiadomosc/Nowa-oplata-na-rachunkach-za-prad-Znamy-stawki-8011301.html - which is a tax that PiS have imposed on all Polish electricity users.

they can happily add this new tax to the prices of their add time/space which will doublethe positively effect on the budget

Gumishu, where do you think the money comes from? If the costs to advertisers increase, who will pay it? We do. The costs will simply be passed on.

It's exactly the same with the bank tax and the retail tax. The bank tax increased costs to consumers, while the retail tax will do exactly the same.

News / Previous Poland's government corrupting the media. [125]

why don't they give 500+ only to those who really need it?

I can't find the article now, but basically, it's because 500+ and the pension payments are untouchable now. If they cut them, their support will vanish - so they're pinned into paying those at the cost of education, health, etc. That's why Duda made such a big fuss out of it, and why PiS were scaring voters with threats that PO/Trzaskowski will take away 500+/pension bribes.

The problem is that everyone can see that 500+ is worth less and less every day. My friend owns a private nursery, and just to keep things 'as is', she had to increase fees by nearly 120zł this year to simply stand still because of the increased costs, and she's about to increase the fees by another 20-25zł a month to cover the increased electricity costs.

Apart from devise the entire JPK system, of course.

because of

...you do know about the 2007-2009 economic crisis, right? You know, the same crisis that engulfed Europe and which took until 2014-2015 to really escape from?
