USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

It is amusing that American consider polish to be unintelligent. I always had impression that this description quite matches lots american. Except North with lots money, universities south of USA is rather poorly fed and educated speaking with awful accent.

If you asked average German, French, Italian....If they find average american intelligent - What would be the answer?

Life / Going to Poland in a hijab - Polish people and Islam [154]

but i am worried about the response of people when I am there, wearing my hijab, or modest clothing,

Ha, Ha quite understandable as in Poland all women wear skimpy clothes and bikinis and have advanced anorexia so yes, your modest clothe can raise a few eyebrows :-)

I think that covering head for women is not as unusual - as you said ( especially in the countryside) older women wear scarves. I think it is the same in some countries in the south (Greece...)- I think it originated from old custom that women cover head when they are married.

But let's be honest Burka, Hijab.....whatever- it is not sign of modesty for me but alienation.

Love / Am I The Only One Who Doesn't Find Polish Women Attractive? [93]

Wulkan,

Your stereotyping is just painful- I only guess that you were rejected by some polish girl and it hurt !!!!

i think that all is about class- there are pretty, ambitious, clever, witty polish girl and the same about british ones.Again you can find chavs in Poland and England.

In same way with modern era, globalisation, EU there are probably less cultural differences now than 50 years ago.

I appreciate that you promote Polish man with Polish woman relationships but in my case it's just not going to happen

I partly understand what you mean but it is harsh just to blame polish women. I think that problem is deeper it is cultural one.

My husband is English and to be fair I find British men more attractive than Polish ones. In Poland it is often like in Italy men are a 'mummy boys' first looked after by mum then by wife. In England young people move out early ,share houses ,get more independent.

About women- It depends where they live- in small town/villages it is so big pressure to get married ( not get left on the shelf!!!) so they they don't always have chance to think about education, independence . Unless...they start university, move to bigger town ,get some independence.....

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

Ha ,ha where I was reading it 'what surprised me in Poland'- One comparison made me smile- bacon sandwiches- it is so BRITISH ( american too?).

In my previous job ( upmarket Legal company) daily training session in hotel - and surprise, surprise what welcomes you after arrival- bacon sandwich and cofffee.

In Europe you would get small ,smart open sandwich, sweet roll, croissant..maybe tiny canape.....

Why would I want greasy bacon sandwich first thing in the morning???

Wulkan,

It is nothing to do with ego. It is just completely idiotic ,narrow minded writing.People who write these kind of opinions have clearly hurt ego.

It is as if someone said- All British women are fat ,plain with rabbit teeth- is it true? I think your wife is British.....

UK, Ireland / The Poles in Britain - a history by BBC Magazine [25]

Effect of reading Daily Mail and daily express.......

There is certain group of people like that- usually working class roots , not very good at their job, with big attitude,( big fan of union trades and strikes) and in general bitter.....

I met few of them.....Even had pleasure to work with one of them. In the end we got on well as surprise, surprise, I could do my job much better than he expected and when was need for it I could stand for myself too.

UK, Ireland / Curious about differences Polish people see with the British? [95]

They have done all that from the generosity of their spirit, kindness and to uphold values of tolerance, equality and a fair play, so close to the heart of the British nation.
hook, line and sinker

Ha,Ha-I thought the same :-)

'deliberate process'- time changed and they had no choice as occupied countries wanted to be free.

Polish bar or English pub...you gave strange example of place for historical/political discussion- do you try to say that polish are rude there but british to contrary behave there like real gentlemen ;-) ?

I general it is is cultural difference- many europeans ( not only polish) can be blunt, direct maybe appearing rude at expressing their opinions ( especially after few drinks) BUT English for a change can be sarcastic , laugh off everything and you don't really know their opinion about anything. It is nothing wrong with sense of humor and some distance to themselves but some people can find it fake....

To be honest I don't quite understand purpose of questions asked in the shops 'How are you today'? 'what are your plans for the evening' ?- I find it bizarre and someway patronizing.

Wouldn't be enough to smile and say 'good morning/afternoon' 'How can I help' ?

Luckily it doesn't happen very often and from my observation these questions are usually asked by young /cocky boys :-)

UK, Ireland / Do people in Poland live "better" than here in the UK? [150]

I like Polish cuisine, but there really is a limited choice compared to the UK

That is true that in UK there is bigger choice of dishes but it is slowly changing in Poland. You can easily find lamb/game in bigger towns like Krakow/Warsaw.

But....saying that most pubs in UK serve home-cooked food?- I think that you live in 'dreamland-cockooland ,- Most pubs in UK serve awful processed food as most of them don't even have proper kitchens.I would say that most people working there don't have much idea about cooking except warming dishes in microwave.

Obtaining licence and meeting hygene and safety demand's doesn't mean 'home cooked food' served :-).

Of course they are busy , after few drinks and if someone never tried anything better it is what it is.

Of course there are lovely country pubs ,well advertised and well priced with good proper food. But there are few of them. majority pubs serve have processed and cooked food brought from some factories which is just warmed up on premises.

Yes, some servr nice Sunday lunch but only some of them cook it on premises.

UK, Ireland / Why are Poles in the UK complaining of racism when you are racist? [73]

From my experience of living here it is not super tolerant country. It is like any others...

That is true this is small minority of ignorant yobs plus small group of 'little Englanders' with big 'chips on their shoulder'. Unfortunately these racists behaviours are picked by local/national press and brings very negative feelings.

I think in Poland racists behaviour is often effect of ignorance. Let's be honest except big cities there are not may foreigners in Poland ( don't count Ukrainians as they are very assimilated)

In UK it is sometimes just pure nastiness of some people.

It also does not help that for the last few months British press was banging on and on all the time how Polish /emigrants work for minimum wages ( drag them down) use NHS, schools..... Daily Mail or rather Daily Hate was a master at it. So we can partly thank press for these anti immigration feelings here.

Plus as I said before - with 1 million Ukrainians in Poland do we attack them? Does Polish press bangs on how they take our jobs, their children go to our schools, doctors,.... NO.

UK, Ireland / Dual nationality: British and Polish [68]

What I ask is particularly about EU nationals who want to apply for Polish citizenship and I could not find accurate answers so far.

It is irrelevant if you are UE or non-UE citizen. You should have been living in Poland for minimum 3 years ( or 2 if married to polish citizen)

udsc.gov.pl/en/cudzoziemcy/obywatele-panstw-trzecich/chce-osiedlic-sie-w-polsce/zezwolenie-na-pobyt-rezydenta-dlugoterminowego-ue

another link in English- I am not sure if I understand it correctly but 5 years to be granted permanent residence in UE. Minimum 2 years of it Poland to get residence in Poland .

No it does not add up as 3+5.
I understand that you have to be minimum 3 years in Poland to apply for citizenship. You could be 2 years somewhere in UE than 3 in Poland so you have residence and also can apply for citizenship.

You can simply say 3 years is enough as EU nationals don't need permit to reside like non-EU nationals

I think this interpretation is correct. You can ask different people on forum but I would suggest phoning them- there is 'kontakt' on this web. This way you will be 100% sure and clear about your situation.

This description applies only for non-EU person. If someone was born in UK/Germany/France.....she/he is resident of EU since birth so he/she needs only 3 years in Poland to apply for citizenship.

That what was original question about.

EU/EEA/CH citizens must be legally resident here for 5 years, with no more than a 6 month break in that time to apply for permanent residency.

I think this only relates to non EU citizen who stayed in EU country for 5 years and can apply for permanent residence.

3 years for EU person.

This 5 years permanent residence is for non EU citizens- For instance Chinese lives in Poland for 5 years- then applies for permanent residence.IT means he can live and work in Poland. But this work permission relates only to Poland as he applied there.

If you are EU it is 3 years.

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

The biggest mistake and shame for Europe is that we did not help people who really needed it. Vulnerable Syrians who lost everything were lost, stomped in crowd of arrogant oportunists men from Pakistan, Somalia....

Ha, ha-Jon you live in some communistic utopia world - no border, re-distribution of wealth....- It would be great idea lazy leeches living on people who work hard.

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

You both talk rubbish- UK rely ( vastly ) on emigrants to do these jobs so if not Polish there would be other emigrants to do these low paid jobs. If there were no emigrants, benefits would be cut and some locals would have to do it. Just survival necessity.

And Polish are as lazy as other nation some are some not and this living 10 to a room... repeated stereotype. Maybe in the very beginning not now

That is the problem - people moan about cheap labour but they also want cheap products in the shops. If we increase wages prices will go up and it will cause even higher moan. Like we will pay £3.50 for box of strawberry instead £2.00- so sell dramatically drops and jobs get reduced to.

I am not economist it is just common sense:-)

Plus - I am not sure if labour is always so cheap- I think farmers pay decent wages but for hard work. Lots of young people quick and fit are probably quite happy with it.

UKIP seems to have some fixation about commonwealth countries.....apparently European people don't fit in UK but people from commonwealth fit here perfectly.

There is some truth in in it that emigrants do lower jobs- mainly it is confidence , language barrier.... but it relates mainly to first generation of emigrants.
