Love / Dating a Polish man - how to impress his mother? [51]

It's a mistake to speak poorly of his mother and ask him to straighten her out. The only thing you're going to accomplish is to create tension between you and him, and it will eventually drive him away.

My advice is to leave it alone. She doesn't live with you. You don't have to see her everyday. He loves you. He wants to ignore her comments. Why don't you ignore them, too? Seriously, leave it alone.

News / Poland fines singer for bashing Bible [159]

"because it's hard to believe in something that was written by someone drunk on wine and smoking some herbs."

Does she write her own music? Because people sometimes see in others what they see in themselves.

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

daytripper, I thought you were from England or Ireland in your pictures.

In the black and white picture of your mom, she reminds me of a Swedish or Norwegian woman. But in her later picture she reminds me of Zsa Zsa Gabor who is Hungarian (when Zsa Zsa was younger and beautiful).

Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

Do the dentists in Poland offer payment plans like they do in the U.S.? Americans can get their teeth straightened and fixed because of the low monthly payments.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish Americans mocked in the American media? [226]

Has anyone mentioned the movie V.I. Warshawski with Kathleen Turner? The lead character is part Polish. The movie was supposedly made from a series of books about the same character.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish Americans mocked in the American media? [226]

Oh, I do remember these from my teens, a classic american cop show...........honest ;)

The Unpronounceables is hilarious. I had never seen that before.

Paul Wesley (Paul Thomas Wasilewski)

Do they actually play Polish American characters? I thought Paul Wesley plays a hispanic character. It's always like that. The Polish characters are portrayed by non-Polish actors, like probably Wysocki in The Chicago Code.

How about Vince Vaughn and Vincent D'Onofrio as Polish American brothers in The Break-Up, which also starred Jennifer Aniston?

The Chicago Code with Jennifer Beals also has some Polish American characters, including the lead character, but I've never watched the show.

There was also a Polish character in Last Chance Harvey with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, but he was only known as the Polish neighbor.

Has anyone mentioned Detective Jaruszalski on Law and Order Los Angeles? There have been many characters on television through the years that have had Polish last names and that were portrayed as well as anyone else but they don't really get recognition.

Genealogy / Just found out I'm Polish! [45]

How on earth did this thread turn into this conversation? The original poster simply asked how to trace her ancestor's name. Weird.

Genealogy / Just found out I'm Polish! [45]

and think I have traced my great-grandfather back in the 1900 Texas census. Only thing is, he'd already changed his surname to Wilson.

Coshomre, Texas had a major wave of immigrations from Poland through one of the ports. I think it was Galveston. And the people created Polish towns and churches there (Texas). Have you investigated that? There are ship records online. You should check for names that are similar to Wilson. You might also be able to find a Polish geneology center somewhere.

Love / Do Polish women talk too much? [74]

Men are led by logic because that's what it takes to protect a family, so that the family can survive. Women are led by emotion because that's what it takes to nurture the family and care about their needs. It may be annoying but I don't think the human race would have survived if we were both led by logic or both led by emotions.

Love / Do Polish women talk too much? [74]

It's true, though. When there's a problem of any kind, (not even related to their relationship), women deal with it by talking about it but men can't understand that because it's their nature to try and fix the problem instead. It's how we're designed.

Women say thousands more words per day than men. Someone did scientific research on this and that's what they found out. I forgot how many words, though.

If you don't let him talk, do you really know him? Maybe he didn't feel like you really knew him and that it wasn't a real relationship.

USA, Canada / Any Poles in Orange County, CA? [40]

Do you watch Huell Howser? He did a show on the Modjeska House.

I also saw an awesome documentary about her life. Bay Island in Newport Beach was once called Modjeska Island because she bought a house there.

Our Saddleback Mountains contain a Modjeska Canyon so named for the famous Polish actress who lived there

You can even take a tour of the Helena Modjeska house.

Anyone have any good restaurants/delis/ other for him to get his feet wet with?

Did you mean in Orange County only? There's Polka Deli in Orange. It's very small but he might meet some people there. They all speak Polish.

If you mean Los Angeles, too, here's a topic that has a list of places:

Pol-AM eateries/delis in California

Love / Are all beautiful Polish girls as crazy as this? [262]

she seems almost to enjoy conflict; she wants to control every aspect of my life; she is extremely distrusting and jealous; she is very temperamental; and, most frustratingly of all, she is NEVER wrong, and EVERYTHING is always my fault. A couple of weeks ago during an argument she actually hit me.

Being more emotional than most does not make one crazy. Softhearted just thinks that because he has a very different personality than she and therefore can't understand why she reacts the way she does.

I'm sorry but her behavior is not just because she's more "emotional" or "reactive".

To be honest, she treats her friends much better than she treats me.

If she knows how to treat her friends better, well, that says a lot. She doesn't have to treat you this way but she wants to.

Okay, but where did the Orange-farming industry move to? (I smell a business opportunity here?)

Seriously? The farms are all over California and some parts of Florida and probably a few other states. It's still a major business.

Why is it called Orange County anyway? Do they grow a lot of Oranges there?

There used to be orange orchards there. It was a major industry. It's right next to Los Angeles County.
