Study / American Muslim girl thinking to go to Medical school in Poland... [87]

Hi emoh,
Nice to make your acquaintance.
I am Irish and I live south of Krakow in Poland.
I am not qualified to answer your question.
I can only recommend certain things,

1) Come over here for a visit first.
2) Some of the people on this forum do not know Poland now.
3) When doing anything for the first time, try to be positive.
(I understand your worry because of what people have said to you).

I wish you luck in your decision and let us know how you get on and what you do and why.

I do not understand, you are not giving away much with that very short statement.

When I walk down the road here, people do not notice me because I look northern European.
I say I am not qualified to answer her question because I do not stand out much.
Do you stand out here?
Do you think here would be worse for emoh than where she is?

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

sweet like the welsh usually are?

I met many Welsh people years ago, good people and then mainly due to geography i have not met any (excluding one nice guy in Barcelona just recent).

I have not met you but I do sometimes find your comments derogatory, it could just be the air bubbles in my blood stream but what are you about?

Travel / Recommendations for Krakow and Myślenice [80]

I would like to tell you about the Jewish quarters (Kazimierz).
Situated south east of Krakow main square about 20 minutes by foot.

People of the Jewish faith fleeing persecution in many countries were asked by the king of Poland to move here permanently.
They lived and prospered here for 500 years.
Until Hitler had other plans for them :(

[inyourpocket.com/poland/krakow/sightseeing/category/4623-jewishkrakow.html] (Krakow in your pocket), about Jewish quarters.

There are two squares in the Jewish quarters. A short walk away from each other, with synagogues and museums all over this area.

The first square is Plac Nowy.
It is hopping with people, the funky part of town with enough pubs to suit everybody's tastes.
This place is cool and worth a look and a few nights out.
Every Taxi driver will know this place.
There are often festivals here.

The second square/cobbled wide street is in Szeroka street.
There are several Jewish restaurants here to choose from.
I recommend Ariel (Jewish restaurant they often have live Jewish music, simply great!
(The police station is on this street)

So basically a great night out is to have some great food in Szeroka street,
with an amazing atmosphere and live music and from there just a short walk to Plac Nowy.
This is a guaranteed great night out !

Accommodation in Krakow varies in price depending on season, location and availability.

I have not stayed in any of these places, these are not recommendations, just websites I have compiled for you to see for yourself.
If you have stayed in Krakow and you recommend the place, please tell us the know the price per night and a it's name.

Here are some web Krakow hotels:

Sodispar Apartments, Hotels Krakow, Hostel Yellow, Sheraton Hotel, Radisson SAS.

Again, if anyone has anything to add or questions, just post them on here.
One thing I would like on here is more photos of the Krakow. A picture tells a thousand words, so it will save me on typing :) I will take my time and try to do the same thing I did here with the next two parts.

Life / Importance of Religion in Poland [187]

I would imagine that religion in Poland is intertwined with politics

Actually i was surprised that the most religious people i have met here see the difference between government and spirituality. I wish that'd happened in Ireland.

Are we still in Poland?

But I am also waiting for the name of the structure.

Leaning tower of Pisa? Italy?
Or is the photo taken at an angle?

Where exactly??? :):)

The acropolis? Greece?

Taken on Independence Day.

Where are they?

top of Kosciuszko hill in Krakow?

And what are they?

Unhappy, by the looks of them.

They represent all the women who fought bravely during independence?

And they?

The lads from the film "Potop", the noble men that fought against the Sweds?

Where is it?

The Wawel castle? one of the king's tombs?

What is the case on the tree?

A shrine to Christianity, where some one had an epiphany or got lost and found his way because of a guardian angel? So probably a statue of Mother Mary? with prayers?

What is this building in Krakow?

Looks like a "modern" church?

What`s this?

It's a bit of carpet left in the mud to prevent cars from sinking when it is raining?

What is this orange fence for?

They prevent snow being blown onto the road by strong winds.

Yes. We are getting good at this ha ha ha, well at least better.

Looks like a "modern" church? Yes. Unfortunately.

I am going to do another film but this time I will focus more on the buildings while driving through Poland.
The lovely wooden houses and the not so nice communist blocks, the beautiful old wooden and stone churches and the mass concrete wierd shaped "modern" quite ugly ones.

Just to give a bit of a balance to the film. Again not very exciting but I think it might be at least slightly interesting for people who have never been to Poland.

Hmm, I might stick in some dancing girls just to liven things up a bit :)

Portugal?

I was recently in a church like this in Portugal.
The walls and ceiling were covered in the skulls and bones of the monks.
The floor was grave stones.
