Travel / Recommendations for Krakow and Myślenice [80]

If you like dinosaurs and a day out with the kids, I recommend Dinozator
dinozatorland.pl

In expensive and great fun 52 kilometers West of Krakow.

DinoZatorland
ul. Parkowa 7
32 - 640 Zator, woj. małopolskie

There is also a Greek mythological lake and a huge insect park (the insects are huge, not the park;) but I did not go to either of them although I heard good things.

Real Estate / Renovating a house in janikowo.... [30]

. I looking at this more as an investment than a family home.

You want other

You may think people are being negative but if you think about it logically it doesn't make much sense.

You think people in another country spending your money renovating a chicken coop and then you have to wait until a lady is dead before it is yours is really a good investment?

How much money are you going to spend on making this chicken coop habitable? do you even have a quote?

Let's say you do it, you work in Scotland and have a house in Poland so you will have to let it out especially during the winter or you would have to pay bills and maintenance for a house that you do not live in (winters are much

colder here) so you let her family stay there, are you going to throw them out when you come over, do you think that will go down well?

I wish you all the best but you could just accept the gift and do nothing.

Life / Lifestyle in Poland - what should we prepare for? [10]

can anyone tell me some things about the daily Polish life and what we should prepare in advance?

If your husband is Vietnamese, he should have a visa to legally work here.
Perhaps his employer could help him, if he does not already have one.

Then he will need to get a P.E.S.E.L number.

I am wondering if I should buy him an ipad mini or an iphone as a means of communication when we are apart.

I recommend Skype, it's free to download onto your computer or smart phone and calls are free between two computers or smart phones with the downloaded software.

There are other cheap ways of contacting each other too.

what is more common currency between U.S dollar and Euro?

Just to clarify, Poland has the Polish Zloty.

Life / Does teetotalism even exist in Poland? [10]

simply interested in the general sentiment towards teetotalism [or abstinence from alcohol] in Poland: does it even exist?

I know people a bit older who became teetotalers as a passive way of defying communism.

During communist times the idea was promoted by the church that if you wanted change you had to be sober.

I think there might have been a notion that the communist system wanted to keep people drunk and therefore easy to control.

There were rumors of a plan for a vodka pipeline from Russia.

A quick google search and I came across this:

Demonstrating that vodka does not recognise political borders, Kesminas has produced a detailed "Dipsomanic" map of Lithuania and the surrounding regions of Belarus, Russia, Poland and Latvia, disclosing the location of the vodka pipeline network, the regions of distribution, the converted clandestine distilleries and the buildings that receive and distribute the contraband.

In association with the London-based architectural-visualisation studio HayesDavidson, Kesminas has prepared a photo-documentary suite of vodka pipeline situations. These 23 photographs reveal the illegal pipelines-to-oblivion in diverse Lithuanian locations.

News / Quality of Life Index Poland 4th on a list of 10 European nations [18]

Quality of Life Index Poland 4th on a list of 10 European nations

Which other countries were in the index? Edit* I got the countries.

Just seems a bit random and they don't state which countries.

The same index says the UK is the worst place to live in.

Switch Gas & Electricity News: Quality of life index

I agree that Poland is a great place to live but I disagree as to the reasons they list.

The retirement age in Poland is male 65 female 60 2013.

They state it is cheaper but don't take average wages into consideration, which is very misleading at best.

Anyway, Poland is a great place to live but this index is just random stuff that should not lead anyone to any real conclusions.

UK, Ireland / 1.2% of scottish population born in Poland [37]

pierogi2000, does your idea of multicultural immigration include Polish people who are the topic of discussion? Or are you just racist? as all your 'arguments' can be used for any mass Immigration.

I'm just curious how stupid you really are.

Law / Poland Internet & TV cable firm call to say they have put TV price up from 1zl to 11zl [10]

Is it legal in contract law here, ie a case of read it and weep it's in the smallprint, sucker or do I now have the right to terminate?

Is it in the contract, what exactly was the offer?

I am just after having a huge row with my internet provider because they have been bought over and our contract was supposed to stay the same but they are charging me an extra 1zł per month.

Obviously a zloty is not the issue, I just hate deceit.

Real Estate / Polish Nieruchomości (real estate) commission madness! [25]

When buying an apartment, is 2.5% the standard fee or is it often negotiated lower?

Negotiate everything is my advice, the worst they can do is say NO and renegotiate, it's annoying but worth it.

Food / Mushroom picking (and eating:) in Poland [36]

Suillus.

Thank you

Suillus luteus is an edible mushroom. Although some authors regard it as one of low quality,[1][5] slippery jacks are considered a delicacy in Slavic cultures (known as maslyata in Russian or maślaki in Polish, derived from the word for "buttery").

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suillus_luteus

Make a sauce out of them, ffs! :D

Thank you again, I will.

Here is one funny song

What language is the original in?

Food / Mushroom picking (and eating:) in Poland [36]

I can take or leave (rather leave) maslaki and prawdziwki.

Well guess what I just had for lunch :)

Maślak
pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ma%C5%9Blak

What's the English word for Maślak?
The texture is terrible, slimy snots not my cup of tea at all.
They did not have fins under the cap and look nice when first picked like browny yellow (sometimes like an luminous green) sponges but after a day in the fridge and a wash, well see pictures below yourselves.

I will try them in the fan oven to get rid of most of the moisture, see it that gets better results.
Has anyone any ideas how to make them taste better?

Boletus edulis (prawdziwki po Polsku) are delicious, it's everything a mushroom should be.
Wonderful aroma and texture they brown up nicely on the frying pan and juicy inside.
It's everything I like about mushrooms! Score!
(No Photos)

(It's a bit weird for me discussing my lunch with the internet but it's only because I am interested and hope youz can give me some ideas, I think>)

Yes! Those photos are mine from the weekend.

Fly agaric it is very good for your health Sean you just need to eat it raw. Eat four or five at one for a good effect.

Thanks Ironballs, you're always looking out for me.

Good point to add to the thread, mushrooms should have their Polish and English names.

Kurki

They are Chanterelle

Kania

And they are Macrolepiota procera (The parasol mushroom)?

And then there are the deadly poisonous ones... and the bad asses look similar to good ones...

Food / Mushroom picking (and eating:) in Poland [36]

Anyone know which species of Boletus that one is?

I think it might be Boletus edulis
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boletus_edulis

Borowik or Borowiki mushrooms or simply as the King of Mushrooms. In Britain the same mushrooms are known as Penny Bun. Porcino is the Italian word for the mushroom, and the French call the same mushroom the cep (cépe).

polishpoland.com/boletus_mushrooms.htm - Wild Boletus Mushrooms

Is this going to be a thread where I answer my own questions because it is actually about Poland? :)

However, talking to yourself is the first sign of madness :D

I always thought arguing with yourself and losing is were all the problems really begin :)

BTW, I'm one of the few people who can't stand mushrooms. Just saying... :P

All mushrooms? But there are such huge differences between the species and how they are prepared that I don't believe you mean all of them :)

The only ones I dislike are the preserved slimy snotty ones (need I say more;)

Food / Mushroom picking (and eating:) in Poland [36]

Ti's the season and what can I say, I'm a fun-gi :)

I got some lovely mushrooms over the weekend in the forest up the mountains.

]Macrolepiota procera (The parasol mushroom)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrolepiota_procera

Boletus is a genus of mushroom, comprising over 100 species.

Anyone know which species of Boletus that one is?

Chanterelle
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chanterelle

I added the fly agaric
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita_muscaria
because well it's a lovely wee fairy tale mushroom and there's an interesting part in Wiki on the Psychoactive uses
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita_muscaria#Psychoactive_use

I have more but lets start with the basics.

Which are your favorite? any good recipes out there? I actually have way more than I could possibly eat so any good advice on preserving would also be appreciated.

I'm going to figure out how to marry the text with the photos while editing....hopefully.

Law / Lawyer in Poland did a bad job possibility of compensation? [17]

I paid a lawyer in Warsaw to do some work for me,

Did you pay cash or bank transfer? If cash did you get a receipt?

(you need a paper trail)

Does a lawyer have an obligation to respond in a timely way to a client?

Did you sign an agreement with her to be your lawyer?

If she took the money and run, what options do I have? Police or Bar Association?

You can sue her of course but you'll need to have some evidence to do so.
The real question in this case is, is it worth it?

Have you a copy of the documents she was supposed to lodge? look for a reference number, this will make checking if she lodged the docs or not a lot easier.

It'll cost you to have another lawyer check if there is a court decision or if they were ever lodged in the first place.

As this is an important matter for you, it will cost you to lodge them if they haven't already been done, I advise focusing on getting whatever it was you need done and then worrying about suing.

there was a society of men among us, bred up from their youth in the art of proving, by words multiplied for the purpose, that white is black, and black is white, according as they are paid.
To this society all the rest of the people are slaves.

For example, if my neighbor has a mind to my cow, he has a lawyer to prove that he ought to have my cow from me.
I must then hire another to defend my right, it being against all rules of law that any man should be allowed to speak for himself.
Now, in this case, I, who am the right owner, lie under two great disadvantages: first, my lawyer, being practised almost from his cradle in defending falsehood, is quite out of his element when he would be an advocate for justice, which is an unnatural office he always attempts with great awkwardness, if not with ill-will.

Life / Public Masturbation now allowed in Sweden, Would this work in Poland? [43]

A COURT IN Sweden has found a man who masturbated in public not guilty of criminal charges, as he was not pleasuring himself at anyone in particular.
The ruling comes after a 65-year-old man took off his shorts and began masturbating on a beach in Stockholm.
He was charged with sexual assault, but found innocent last week as his act was not "targeted", The Local reports.

Life / Why foreigners in Poland do not respect Poland's culture and traditions? [68]

intelligent and very wise when in fact you are very mediocre at best. You hate the fact it has been exposed.

I don't know about hating it or it having been exposed but I do know there is a long list of geniuses like you that continuously get banned only to come back under a different name to "get revenge" by naming those who have made you feel small and pathetic without having any arguments so you fall back on some words that are so totally open to interpretation that it is just meaningless dribble.

Wtf have I got to do with this?
You can leave me out of your BS and go back to your gimpy private forum and be with your own sort.

Aliens never abduct those who want to be abducted otherwise it wouldn't be abduction ;p

He want's you but doesn't want me, so which pathetic loser did you put a mirror to? or is the list too long?

Why's everyone beating up on Torq? he was a good guy.

I am supposed to be disrespect Poland but drinking that ********* is asking a little too much...even for me.
a heck of a lot of new beers these days, when the top beers aren't as good it makes room for the tasty "underdogs".

Unpasturized is very popular these days.
I still can't drink 'foggy' beers though... old habits die hard I guess

I think we should have a rating system for posts from 1-5

Then people can see how awful everyone thinks their posts are and how awesome mine are.

Study / AFRICAN STUDENTS INVASION in Krakow [197]

Nobody with an iq lower than 100 should be getting into any European country.

Report author Dr Pat Mottram said the average IQ of prisoners was 87, while a sizeable minority had very low IQs indeed.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

Polish people smile with their eyes.

I read this recenty:

Emoticons

Chinese & Japanese emoticons are like this: ^_^ (happy) and ;_; (sad) rather than this: :) and :( because they use the eyes rather than the mouth when reading someone's emotional state.

Travel / How would you describe Krakow ? [8]

I like it here in Krakow and you have the benefit of the mountains for trekking and skiing.

It really depends on what you want out of life?
